Turning down the opportunity of the 04:30 train, our bodies now more adjusted to this time zone, we caught a more civilised 06:00 service towards Kamikochi. The journey consists of thirty minutes on a train followed by an hour on a coach. Neither of these were covered by our JR Passes and it was necessary to buy complete open return tickets for 4400 yen per person. From reading guide books I was prepared to find hoards of tourist marching in slow lines around the picturesque, but well visited Kamikochi. As we dismounted the coach at Taisho pond, I was pleasantly surprised to see only a few people around. The majority of these were elderly tourists who had come equipped with painting paraphernalia or SLRs with a bag full of lenses and clearly planned to settle in ... read more

Day 2 in Nagano and not really even spent in Nagano but outside the city. The Rough Guide – which as usual picks the eyes out of the best things to do I must say (it may be 1999 edition but as they say only the prices have changed) – said best day trip was out to shrine at the alpine area of Togakushi. It may only be 20km but the 40kmh speed limit and the very twisty hairpin bends along the Bird-Line Driveway mean it takes an hour. Finding the bus was an exercise when all the time the best stop was just around the corner and I bought a return ticket from the travel agency right by the bus stop. To fire up (and later burn off on the walk) I had some cold ... read more

This is written on a shinkansen away from Nagano (we’ll get there eventually) back to Niigata where I transited to get to Nagano. With a rail pass it is usually quicker to get 2 shinkansens – apart from the fact that there is likely only 2 direct (slow) trains a day anyway. Last post was in Akita I think. Not all that much there to see as the old castle has long gone. There was also a bit of rain about the day I left which surprised me so had to return to get my spray jacket. The only “sight” I saw was an old red brick bank building built in 1912 which has survived earthquakes etc. Apart from a couple of timber paneled VIP rooms what was of more interest was an exhibition of a ... read more

Goodbye Southeast Asia, hello Japan. I've been here five days now, initial impressions are very good but I'll get to that in a bit. Cambodia was... brief. Brief and very bloody hot. April is the hottest month of the year for most of Southeast Asia, and although it's only about 5 degrees hotter on average than their coldest month of the year you definitely notice it. Of the five days I had in Cambodia, three of them were spent sitting on a bus. Not the greatest use of my time, but the only reason I went to the country was to see Angkor Wat so it had to be done. Spent a fairly sticky night in Phnom Penh in a hostel with some dodgy air conditioning. It didn't work particularly well anyway, but the top bunks ... read more

Geo: 36.6514, 138.181Serena had, had enough of Snow boarding.... so the boys went snowboarding And the girls went to make glass jewelery. That seems perfect. There is a small shop that made glass jewelery just out of the city. We got dropped off by Henry and we where going to find our way back to the hotel. It was a small shop with lots of natural light. It was called "Glass Beadmaking Shop"The little man gave Serena an apron and she started to select the colours of the glass and the design she wanted. She went behind into the workshop. The flame was lit and they began. He was wonderful and very patient. I could see the concentration on Serena's face. It was a slow process but very precise. She loved it so much that she ended up making 4 ... read more

Geo: 36.6514, 138.181Family Day.. Mums request. It was 1 hour drive in the taxi but worth it. We went to the Zenkoji Temple. It was fantastic. A guide helped us with the whole experience. We had to take off our shoes. It was very cold. Walk on the bamboo reed mats.First we had to worship the gods. Take pinch of salt. Say a prayer and then threw the salt. Then we had to go down a set of stairs and it became dark. we had to keep our hand at the same level as the hand rail and we had to find a lock on the door. It represented the door way to the after life. By finding the locked door it meant that when it was time for you to go to the afterlife you will know ... read more

Geo: 36.6514, 138.181Got the kids fitted out in the morning. Our driver was an Aussie. Got to the shop. 3 out of the 4 guys where Aussies. All sorted. Got a lift back and then it was off for a walk around. The sun was out so not so cold. It was so much fun. Everyone must have thought that we where crazy jumping in the snow and throwing snowballs at each other. The city center is very small. There where like little grave yards everywhere. Ate lunch.Time to snowboard. Kids and us where picked up and off we went to the slopes. Bought the ski pass and up we went. The kids had lessons and loved it. They where stuffed by the end of it. Geo: 36.6514, 138.181Snow. Snow. Snow. This Christmas holidays the kids and husband decided that it would be a cold one.Snow. Snow boarding and more snow. The flight in we could see Mt. Fuji in the distance. Japan. Nagano. Hakuba. It was very warm when we arrived at the airport.Nagano is where they had held the winter Olympics so off we went.It was a 6 hour taxi ride from the Narita airport to Hakuba. The taxi stopped every 1 or 1 and a half hours for a stop.We would hop out of the car.The weather was like in Nanjing so we went to eat something.Squid seemed like the first option for the boys. Serena and I had Hot Chocolate and a toilet stop.It was so clean and the toilets are heated.... Yeah. The best thing in the world. Second stop. ... read more

My last week in Japan! I could hardly believe a whole year had passed since I arrived in a nervous whirlwind the previous July. The rainy season had passed and my house was transformed from the winter freezer into a baking, hot sauna. I sat, lethargically most days after school, sprawled on the sofa, sweat streaming down my face.....there was no respite from the heat unless I went and trawled around the local supermarkets to enjoy the aircon. This was a busy week of cleaning, packing and parties. Monday was my first leaving party with the board of education guys. They picked me up from my house so I could drink and took me to a really nice traditional, and fairly informal, Japanese restaurant. We shared lots of delicious fish dishes - although at one stage ... read more
