After our visit to Nara we had two more days left in Kyoto. At the time I was doing my diploma we had an exchange student from Japan in our lab. We hadn’t had any real contact for the last 4 years, but he read our blog and contacted me via facebook. Therefore we decided to meet for dinner on the 24th. When we arrived in Kyoto in the morning I had at first to get the address of a kendo shop at the tourist information center (Reason in the next kendo related post). In search of the center, we mixed up the Japanese floor ordering. In Japan there is no ground level, it is already called first floor. So we went to the third instead of the second floor, but this was a lucky accident, ... read more

JAPAN In order to try to catch up with the blog, this is the itinerary for Japan, we are going to put a few more pics on 15th March - Kagoshima 17th March – Yokohama 19th March – Kobe 21st March – Nagasaki All the ports of call into Japan were maiden, that is, the Queen Elizabeth had not visited before. Our overall impression of Japan was how clean the place was, (they don’t have rubbish bins on the street for instance). The people were so friendly and helpful, they have little English and there are not many European signs. However the guides were great and sometimes very amusing, having not been to Europe to study English, their interpretations were ‘quaint’ to say the least. We did a tour at each port of call which with ... read more

Lounas sisälsi friteeratun porsaankyljyksen, riisiä, salaattia, ja kaikenlaista muuta jota en varsinaisesti tunn... read more

Well up early and off on another train journey - glad we got the Japan Rail passes as we have really used them. Anyone going to Japan you must purchase these outside of Japan and I can honestly say it will save you an absolute fortune (this is my advice for today! see also getting wise whilst in Japan). I had decided that we were going to experience an onsen and also a natural sand bath. Well after and 1 1/2 hour train journey and then transfer by bus for another 10 minutes we arrive at Ibusuki Sunamushi Onsen. Mike is really apprehensive by now and is thinking what the hell has she roped me in for this time. Up the escalator we go and join the queue. The lady then takes our money and gives ... read more

Well started the day off well got up and got the bus (yes, Mike does travel on a bus - only when PJ makes him though, ha ha) and then the ferry over to Sakurajima. Mike did a risk assessment prior to us going as he worked out that the volcano had erupted 4 times a day this year and today it would not erupt. Sometimes good having an actuary in your company as they can work out the odds - just thought should I take him to the horse racing, might win a million!!!!! We took a foot spa which is from the volcanic water - it is supposed to be medicinal, does that mean it cures everything - course it does I am in Japan and in the land of plenty - with so ... read more

Last meal with our adopted friends was brilliant we had oysters, squid and pork and chicken tempura washed down with a couple of beers (yes, only a couple). Anyway whilst eating our meal we were watching TV and noticed that they were showing landslides in Japan. We asked what was going on and they said to us in pidgeon Japanese "no wowies souf (not quite Japanese but that is what it sounded like)". We explained we were going south (or souf, ha ha) - "ah so" they said "no go souf, bad". We showed them on the map we were going to Kagoshimo - "oh bad, bad" laughing at us. We decided to get up early and go to the information before we set off south to Kagoshimo, the lady there said everything ok - so ... read more

As we were driving towards Kirishima, we saw a baseball center and we thought we should give it a go. Baseball is the national sport of Japan sometimes I wonder why it's not as popular in other countries. I've never watched a baseball game or played baseball myself. It was surprisingly fun. It might look like it's just hitting a ball but it's really challenging. 90% of the time the ball was going so fast I can't even touch it. My success rate increased after I changed to a lower speed. After this experience, we were really looking forward to the baseball game that we booked for our last day in Japan. Then we head on to the famous onsen at Kirishima hotel. I saw this place on a brochure at a train station and thought ... read more

Asia » Japan » Kagoshima » Sakurajima March 26th 2012

The drive from Kumamoto to Sakurajia was quite scenic. Yatsushiro, Hitoyoshi and Kirishima were all beautiful places. Sakurajima is an island with active volcanos. Whenever there is volcano there is onsen water. This is why we are here - to try the famous onsen by the sea Furusato Onsen. It was gonna be our once-in-a-lifetime experience. For obivous reasons photos are not allowed in the onsen. But the hotel's official website should give you some idea http://www.furukan.co.jp/. This onsen is great. It's finely docorated the whole thing looks like a shrine on the water. There are rocks under water for people to sit on and enjoy the ocean view which is only a few meters away. Our room is 12 tatami size and quite spacious. The balcony is facing the ocean so you can imagine the ... read more

We were on a boat for 10 hours to the first island Amami. When we got off the boat at 5am we noticed a few people from Switzerland. Their plan was to head to the airport and rent a car, we decided to follow. Once at the airport we hitched a ride in their car and headed to the closest beach. When we got there we were greeted with a sign that said "beware of the many poisonus snakes near by", eek! Once down at the beach we very quickly realised we were going to be the only ones on the beach. We hung out for a while and then decided to hit up another beach. Again the same thing we were the only 4 on the beach, and then just when we were about to ... read more

From Beppu we took an early train to Mt. Aso to stay at Aso Base Backpackers hostel. The people who run this hostel were very helpful and gave us a map of the volcano area and recommended treks to take for the day. We took the local bus to Mt. Aso and road a rail car up to the middle point of the crater. There was a tourist area that many people were at taking pictures, and we decided to take the hikes to get up higher and further away from the people. The Naka Dake point was our destination. It started out as a very easy hike up pre-made stairs and then got a bit steeper, and then became more like rock climbing. At one point we steered off the path and were climbing up ... read more
