Well, well... what do you know? As my imminent departure drew near, someone figured it was time to ease up on the clouds. Frustratingly so, the blue sky began to peak out again. I guess someone wanted to make sure the weather wouldn't keep my plane grounded as if to really make sure I got off the island pronto. Naha's immediate proximity to the airport meant that I could just casually check out and walk a few hundred meters to the nearest monorail station, and then find myself at the airport concourse some fifteen minutes later. The whole process of leaving my room and securing a boarding pass didn't even take 30 minutes. Quite impressive. Domestic flights in Japan generally seem to board around fifteen minutes before departure, so with more than an hour to spare ... read more

This will be my last posting from Shibushi. I find it amusing that I'm writing my last post from the same place I wrote my first post - Popeye Internet Cafe! I only have about 15 minutes before my time runs out so this will be an extremely quick update. It has been about a month since my last entry. Since then I've busy wrapping everything up - teaching my last classes, having farewell parties with the various groups I've worked with, seeing friends one last time. I am scheduled to leave town on Monday, though I won't actually leave the prefecture until August 1st. I know my entries haven't always been super-positive but as I have been getting ready to head out, I've been appreciating all the things I have come to love about ... read more

Deafening thunder storms all night mean an sub-optimumly overcast visit to Sakurajima, Japan's most explosive volcano, which skulked shrouded in mist like a London office worker with the flu hiding under a towel sniffing hot Vicks. Trying to take it easy for a change, we took a bus tour designed for the Japanese touring mentality, which begat 12 minute stops at each site. Our gigglesome guide seemed to have been on the happy baccy - she could barely inhale for laughing. Saw some lava - meh, I've seen better. What a travel snob! Had a bowl of Happy Meal priced blue collar ramen for dinner, having asked for directions when standing right outside the place - damn, Kanji (chinese characters) are hard to recognise! Chased the cheap noodle soup with coffee and cake costing twice ... read more

Here I am, finishing off my holiday Monday with a melon soda and some computer time. Our school's culture festival is taking place this Friday and Saturday so our school gave us a holiday in exchange for our attendance on both days. I'm exhausted even though I was supposed to use this extra time to relax and prepare for my departure. Living in the countryside, it's not always easy to find exciting things to do, especially when you're the only one on holiday - but I don't seem to encounter this problem very often. There always seems to be something exciting on offer, this weekend being no exception. The fun started on Friday afternoon with dinner and drinks at Satoko's house. She lives in a beautiful and enormous house attached to a Buddhist temple in ... read more

Sometimes I wonder about Japan. Recently I have made a habit of browsing the Asahi (English) newspaper cover to cover during my free periods. The world is a fascinating place but I always find myself drawn to the back of each edition where they feature Japanese news. This is where you find the juicy stuff: corruption, murder, scandal. There never seems to be a shortage of sensational stories. In the last two months we’ve seen Shibushi featured for police corruption that led to innocent suspects being tortured into confessions and government corruption that resulted in the minister of agriculture committing suicide. We’ve watched as the new Prime Minister, Mr. Abe, has stood by said minister despite calls for an investigation into excessive spending by his department, denied the existence of comfort women during WWII and ... read more

If you ask me, the best way to foster communication and understanding between people is outdoor pursuits. It’s probably just getting together with people who have the same interests but there’s something about being outside that allows you to commune with people in ways that don’t actually require much oral communication. My case in point is last weekend when I went trekking with my friend, Satoko, and two of her adventurous friends. I met Satoko last month through my friend Lucy. When I mentioned my love of walking she was quick to tell me about her friend Nomoto-san (or Mr. Nomoto), a sea-kayaking instructor, and his traveling companion Kumi-chan, who are walking around Kagoshima Prefecture. Though not everyone can be so lucky as to have 2 months free to spend walking the Kagoshima coastline, we ... read more

I believe I have committed the sin of all blogging sins…I have gone over a month without an update! I failed to report the blooming of the cherry blossoms; I didn’t disclose any details about my Aussie friend Tim’s second visit; I even attended another wild dance party in the city without a peep. I believe I have gone too long to revisit those events, but having received several requests for an update I will write about my latest adventure. To be honest, except for a couple of exceptional weekends, I had settled into a bit of a rut since my last update. My days were on an unwavering schedule (wake up, eat breakfast, walk to school, spend 8 hours there, do some form of exercise, walk home, cook dinner and make lunch, go to ... read more

I wrote this update days ago but have dragged my feet on posting it (for no other reason than sheer laziness). There was an earthquake in Northern Japan last weekend (which I hadn’t even heard about until I got to work this morning). Although it was very strong, it didn’t have any impact down here in Kagoshima. Now for my overdue entry: I ran my third and last half-marathon in Japan last weekend on one of Kagoshima’s southern islands called Tanegashima - famous for surfing, black sugar and a rocket launch pad. I traveled down on the aptly named “Rocket” ferry on Saturday morning with my two city friends Sophie and Zach. The second fastest inter-island boat, the Rocket felt more like an airplane than a ship - a very good thing considering the choppiness ... read more

As promised, here are some photos from the wedding reception I attended on Saturday. In many ways it was similar to a Western reception; it was held in Kagoshima’s swanky Hotel Welview and consisted of an 8-course traditional Japanese dinner, a beautiful cake and copious amounts of champagne, beer and shochu (the drink of choice down here, made with fermented sweet potatoes). Everyone was seated around round-tables in a reception hall with a head table for the bride and groom up front. As usual, speeches were made by several people, though these seemed to be more professional than at a Western reception: our school Vice Principal made a speech to the groom (my coworker) and I have a feeling the bride’s employer did the same for her. Maybe their friends spoke, though I couldn’t understand enough ... read more

Hi all, Today, we (the classmates and me) are headed to Kagoshima on a school related trip (You guessed right! It is not quite that vacation thing yet). But I am already in the vacation mood, so for me it boils down to the same thing. There will be some meeting we have to participate in there. Kagoshima prefecture is located at the southern tip of kyushu island and kagoshima itself is a city quite larger than Oita. leaving oita 8:00am We (My classmates and me) all met at Nakahanda station where we boarded the limited express train bound for Kumamoto. We are 5 folks travelling together. From Oita to kumamoto it took around 3 hours. At kumamoto, we had to switch train and boarded the bullet train which is faster and more comfortable than the ... read more
