I've received some inquiries as to how I'm doing, and the answer is I'm very, very tired but it's been a great trip so far. I was at an onsen for two days, which was relaxing (especially loved the massage) but no Internet access. Yesterday I was out all day to look at areas of the coast -- very hard to see, but important to see as well. Anna's volunteer group HANDS went in a trip and we went to several temporary shops to support the economy of the coast. Today once Anna wakes up, I will be visiting the ATM (budgeted a withdrawal two days ago but didn't have time, so I literally have 1 yen (approximately 1.2 pennies) to my name right now. We plan on visiting Morioka today. They are having record rains ... read more

I was up early this morning (Monday Japan-time, still Sunday I believe old time) and wrote the longest entry about my arrival and the first morning I stayed here only to accidentally bump my laptop and closed the browser window. This laptop is extremely sensitive to small movements. I thought I might have saved a draft of the entry, but I hadn't. I was a bit encouraged when I found three comments on my blog, as the site never notified me anyone attempted to comment so that I could moderate them. Although I'm not doing an adequate job, at least some people might be enjoying the updates and photos. There is so much to share that I feel I'm not doing an adequate job, but instead I'll include a few more photographs of the time I ... read more

Had a great day today at the Mizusawa Junior High's sports festival. The kids were incredibly enthusiastic and you could tell that they had worked really hard in the lead up to today. There were three teams: red, yellow and blue. Each team had a poster with their team animal (fox for red, tiger for yellow and eagle for blue) and their own distinctive cheer to support the ones performing. They were judged on the cheer and the poster as well as on their sports prowess. The posters were extremely impressive - I thought they had been done professionally. And the cheers were sometimes impressive and often hillarious - and they kept at it all day long! I find the concept of a cheer to support your team - every runner, not just those who come ... read more

Today I headed off to Iwate prefecture's capital, Morioka. This city is much bigger than Mizusawa or Hiraizumi and more used to foreigners, which meant that much more was written in Romaji (Japanese written phonetically in Roman letters) or in English. The journey itself was very picturesque, taking us through paddy fields and villages, with a stunning mountaineous backdrop. Morioka itself was... cold and grey (although not actually raining). Having walked around Chuson-ji the day before, I decided to give Morioka's temple district a miss and headed instead for the park with the ruins of the old castle and the Sakura (cherry blossom) shrine. Some cherry blossom - the weeping cherry trees - was still out and made for a stunning backdrop. The castle and grounds are now the city park, and give commanding views over ... read more

Today I took the train to Hiraizumi - a 20 minute ride from my base in Mizusawa and a quaint little town that (incidentally) happens to be a world heritage site. Undeterred by the rain, I sallied forth and was not disappointed. My first stop was to a Cave Temple called Takkoku-no-Iwaya Bishamon-Do (try saying that to the bus driver and getting it right!). Cave Temple is a little misleading as the main temple is in fact a free-standing raised wooden structure whose supports are built into a natural cave. The building as it stands today is a reconstruction as the original temple and the first replacement both burned down (for once, therefore, I was grateful for the rain). As I am slowly learning - most "temples" in fact consist of a temple-complex: a fenced-off area ... read more

Having waved goodbye to LA (but not without sampling the famous cupcakes at Sprinkles, Rodeo Drive, being caught on camera and going to my first Bollywood party); endured the flight to Tokyo, and the train journey to Mizusawa-Esashi station in the middle of nowhere (or so it seemed to me), I made it through my first day in Japan. I'm in Mizusawa, a town so small it doesn't even register on the blog map (although that's hopefully being remedied as I write). Quaint, pretty and extremely friendly. I set out mid-morning, on foot, to explore; managed to find the high street, with various fascinatingly unfamiliar shops and restaurants and the train statiion. One highly confused conversation with a long-suffering train master later, and I am armed with a train timetable and the knowledge that I can ... read more

Today I looked at apartments..one was very small with one room and a bath but it had a great view of the river. The second one was bigger with a good view of the river, but it would be very hot in the summer. The 3rd one had no view except that of a parking lot but it was very big with 3 separate rooms and would be cooler in the summer. I chose the 3rd one as it is the biggest and I bought a lot of things for my place..it also has a crawl space for storage. I don't have any photos of this apartment yet but I have some of the great view from my work place. I must pay out about $2500.00 but in yen 250,000 yen, and that gives me one ... read more

Asia » Japan » Iwate » Tono November 3rd 2008

Let's begin "get out of Sendai" weekend with the 1st first visit yesterday. I headed out to big and wide Tono Valley yesterday. Tono is famous for folklore and having a very easily accessible rural scene. There are wide ride fields here and many different places to ride a rented bike or car. When I left Sendai yesterday morning it didn't look cloudy at all. By the time I got into Shin-Hanamaki station it was pouring a cold and bitter rain. I asked the lady at the information desk if she thought I should even try to go into Tono today and she told me that I should be ok if I stick to the museums. I got into Tono after about 2 hours and found myself in Kappa land. Kappa are a piece of japanese ... read more

Lake Tazawako Marathon A lot of decision making and ideas to conquer the world come about after you’ve had at least one nomihodai and a karaoke session. Running the Lake Tazawako Marathon was one of them! My name was down for the 10km run and before I knew I was at the starting line ready to go! I was a little nervous as running is definitely not my forte and waking up on the day of the marathon to heavy rain made me doubt my efforts even more. However all pumped and ready to go the gun fired and we were off! I quickly made my way to the end of the pack, but managed to keep a steady pace and luckily I wasn’t last. There were people along the sides of the road the whole ... read more

I'm writing this from about 100m below the bottom of the sea separating Hokkaido and Honshu. Today's just a pure travel day, my next real destination is Matsumoto, near Nagano. Yesterday was a nothing day, didn't sleep well the night before, the pictures below were taken the previous nights. Last night was stuck in the same dorm room as a snorer so again not much rest... stopping tonight in Morioka going to try checking in to a real hotel just so I can have a good nights rest, but failing that there's a rather nice capsule inn right by the station... somewhere I think. Morioka's a pretty cool little city stayed here a few nights my last trip. Didn't book my tickets for this ahead of time so stuck in the non reserved area of the ... read more
