We got up early on 13 October to catch the 8:40 ferry from Ura no Hama harbour. Upon arrival at Aceport Kesennuma harbour, we got in a taxi and headed for Kesennuma station. A number of taxis came to Aceport Harbour; it was very convenient. I’ve heard that all the taxi companies have been relocated to higher ground, a couple of miles away from the harbour, since 11th March 2011. All the taxi drivers we met experienced the huge tsunami on that day, and talked about their experiences and views of the ongoing restoration project. Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) It took 10 minutes by taxi from harbour to Kesennuma station. After the disasters, JR (Japan Railway) Ōfunato Line managed to get the line restored between Ichinoseki and Kesennuma, but not further towards Ōfunato: Kesennuma has become ... read more

My mother took us to Seki no Ichi, one of the most famous restaurants in Ichinoseki, for dinner. We took the taxi to the restaurant. A five-minute drive from Ichinoseki station, we were shown the former brewery site which had been converted into the restaurant, museum and shops. When we reached there, it was so dark that we couldn’t see the exterior of the historic buildings but could see the historic rooms with displays of antique furniture and the family’s treasures in the restaurant. As we sat at the reserved table, we found dishes of mochi – Japanese rice cake made of mochigome, a short grain japonica glutinous rice – were flavoured with kinako (soybean flour), a... read more

Unfortunately, it was rather cloudy and started showering in Ichinoseki in the morning, while we were walking to the station. We headed to the platform for Kesennuma line. As planned, we caught the 9:10 train for Kesennuma. There were quite a few people getting off at Geibikei. My mother quietly said, ‘Where are these people going in the rain?’ I smiled and said, ‘Of course, they are all going to Geibikei – like us, they are getting on the boat along the gorge this morning.’ We bought the tickets and left our big pieces of luggage at the ticketing office. Despite the rain, a large number of crowds came and joined a queue for the boat ride. We ensured to stay together so that we would get on the same boat. As it was raining, a ... read more

Hiraizumi We took the Tohoku Main line from Ichinoseki to Hiraizumi. There were quite a few passengers on that line. I went to Tohoku for the school excursion during my junior high school period. My father also remembered going to Tohoku with his students in line with the extension of the Shikansen’s service to Tohoku at the beginning of the 1980s. I remembered visiting Hiraizumi and Matsushima, both of which were associated with the famous poet Matsuo Basho, as a part of the excursion, but I wasn’t particularly interested in the historical artefacts and monuments of Hiraizumi at that time – I couldn’t explain to Mark the features of Mōtsū-ji and Chūson-ji temples and what we would see. Thus, I had looked at the information about these historic temples on the websites and found the following ... read more

Taro Bosai (disaster prevention) tour The train brought us to Taro at 13:34. Having seen four people carrying suitcases, a young lady, who was waiting at the end of the subway, asked if we were the Yamato. She had brought one of her colleagues so they would show us round with two cars. One of the tourists appeared at the same time as us; she was interested in joining the bosai tour. At Taro, we were shown harsh realities as we came out from the station. Pointing at empty ground where weeds were growing, the female bosai guide, Ms Hirai, said: ‘Until the morning of 11th March 2011, there used be a travel inn and the supermarket selling fresh fish and vegetables. Also there was a building called “Taro Kanko (tourist) centre” underneath the bank of ... read more

Trip with Sanriku Railway We had initially planned riding on the sightseeing boat on 8 October. However, my mother made a suggestion that if we were to travel to Kuji, north edge of North Rias Line, it would be best to travel without carrying large pieces of luggage. Thus, we changed our plan: we would travel with North Rias Line and stroll around Kuji on 8 October. By morning, the gusty wind had eased off, but it was still rough in the sea. The receptionists had gathered and provided necessary information for tourists all the time. They told us that the sightseeing boats for 8 October were still pending but there hadn’t been any outstanding news of Sanriku Railway, which meant that the train would be running as scheduled. At 8:50, we got on the shuttle ... read more

Kuji, north edge of Sanriku Railway, is home for Amachan, a female diver on Kosode coast, which was dramatised on the NHK – Nippon Hoso Kyokai: Japan Broadcasting Corporation, between April and September 2013. I felt this city was rather quiet. We walked to Michi no Eki (The property is located in the middle of tourist destinations and houses facilities for tourists such as tourist information centre, restaurants, and supermarkets selling fresh fish, meats, dairy products and vegetables taken from local farms and fishermen) Kuji, Yamase Dufukan (House of the ground and wind). It was just 10 minutes’ walk from the station. Although it wasn’t lunch time, we firstly entered the restaurant ‘Sankairi’. It was at 11:30 when we sat the table, but the restaurant was nearly a full-house. My father took a set menu (with ... read more

JR Yamada Line After lunch, we went back to the JR’s concourse near the ticketing barrier, and walked down to Yamada Line’s platform. Upon arrival at the platform, my mother was looking for the sign for Yamada Line – it was in the middle of the long platform. At 13:30, a light-green coloured train came into our sight. We found the direction of Miyako at the front of the train, and it stopped at where the sign of JR Yamada Line was hanging. I told Mark that we were going to take this train to go to Miyako. I was a little surprised with the JR Yamada line which carried only one passenger car, and asked my mother if this had been done with the temporary method because of the tsunami disasters. As a matter of ... read more

It's 9:31 am in the morning on Sunday, May 6th in Japan-time and 5:30 PM on Saturday Pacific Standard Time (happy early birthday, Mom). I'm all packed except for the laptop. Anna is taking a quick shower and then I'm off to Kitakami station to get on the shinkansen. We didn't move fast enough this week to get reserved tickets, so I will be jumping on one of the three cars that are for unreserved passengers. After that trip, I will arrive in Ueno Station and head for the Narita Airport. It's been a great trip, although I know I didn't update as much as I should have. I will have to add photographs upon my return. See many of you soon.... read more
