Who doesn’t love festivals? Seriously, you’d have to be quite a grinch not to. I love festivals. The fun, food, events and (in this case) giant snow sculptures the size of buildings. Yuki Matsuri or better known in the western world as the Sapporo Snow Festival is an event of international caliber. Over 2 million tourists flock to this frozen northern Japanese city from February 5 through 11 every year. When I moved to Japan I decided at one point I would be one of those 2 million + tourists. We all flew to Sapporo on Sunday, Alexa, Lauren, Katie, Simon and I. As the plane taxied onto the runway it was obvious that this was definitely a snowy city. Outside the airport, outside the train and on our walk to the hotel snow was falling ... read more

Saturday, 27 December 2008 Another freezing day awaited us this morning as we toured the farm houses of the Hokkaido University (北海道大学). The snow-capped buildings and chimneys reminded us of those structures found in Europe. Lunch was a simple affair at a tiny ramen store near Sapporo station as recommended by M. As usual, the noodles did not disappoint in terms of quality and quantity. After lunch, we ventured our way to the Ishiya Chocolate Factory (白色恋人) located at the western suburbs of the city. The factory building and the open spaces were attractions of their own. It was an added bonus that the factory grounds were opened to the public free of charge even though a fee must be paid to witness the chocolate making process. While the chocolates might not taste out of this ... read more

Friday, 26th December 2008, Sapporo "Welcome to Sapporo" said the big signboard as we came out of JR Sapporo Station. Earlier, we had baded goodbye to Mr Mori and Muku at Niseko Resort before continuing our 2 hour train journey to Sapporo. It wasn't difficult to fall in love with Japan's fifth largest city (1东京,2横槟,3大阪,4名古屋 and 5札幌). The well-planned city have what everything Tokyo has to offer. Yet, it have what most major Japanese cities are lacking ~ the crowds. It never get too crowded in Sapporo even during the rush hours. With 3 subway lines criss-crossing the city, it was easy to move around in this relaxed city. I loved their weekends as the one-day subway ticket (donni chika kippu) costs only 500 yen for unlimited travel. On other days, the same ticket was 800 ... read more

When we got to Sapporo we met up with our first Servas family. Servas is an international organisation to build links around the world by hosting travellers from other countries. We found Shoko through the list. She has 2 boys, 12 and 14 and they sounded interesting. We asked if they would host us in Sapporo. I was a bit worried about meeting up with them. I didn't know if we would get on and if the boys would get on. I didn't know how much English they had as Weixiong, Shoko's husband who was away in China had previously done the talking in the arrangements. It worked out fantastically! Shoko's English was great -- and we were able to have good conversations. She is very involved in the organic food movement; through the school and ... read more

Our last day in Sapporo was mainly about beer. As Nick doesn't drink beer, Mike and I ventured out alone for this one. But first, a stop at the dollar store -- just out of curiosity. It was actually pretty impressive. Definitely better things at their dollar store than at ours. I got a few needed and unneeded items (including toe socks!). Mike and I headed out for the Sapporo Bier Garten, but first stopped for lunch at a famed ramen place. All over Japan, ramen shops are well-known for a good lunch. It's essentially ramen noodles (but theirs start off cold and partially cooked -- like wet noodles) with different additions. Most have beef with different broths. I got miso. Tasted like ramen noodles. haha Not sure what all the fuss is about. By the ... read more

This morning, Mike surprised us with his new look. Nick's first comment of the day (at noon -- yes that was his first comment of the day) was that he looks like the Village People. Commence the gay jokes. Even Megumi said he looked gay. haha He became Freddy Mercury for the day. Our day began with one of the only few movies/tv in English in Nick's apt -- Tomb Raider 2 (it's a box set, so we still have entertainment for tomorrow). We actually intended to go to the beer garden (Sapporo factory) but got waylaid on the way. First was lunch at Mos Burger, something like McDonalds. A tasty burger and a souvenir glass (ok, so they weren't giving away the glasses, but they're cool! We noticed the security cameras on the way out... ... read more

Our fun-filled adventure for today was a trip to the zoo. The adventure part included renting a car to get there -- Megumi's car is in the shop. It was a pretty nice honda rental though, and allowed us to fit more people (Matt and Yo-ichi came too). Nick and Megumi had donuts for breakfast (I snagged one) which were way better than donuts in the states. Very fresh and a little crunchy. It was like the best donut you've ever had (hot Krispy Kreme excluded). Nick's looked like a plain ring with chocolate frosting, but inside was chocolate (not cream, just chocolate). How interesting.... It'll be my next donut. The zoo was a good 3hour drive, but we stopped at a little shop on the way. About 5minutes after getting into the car, we were ... read more

The main city of Hokkaido. Sapporo was like the gateway to many parts of Hokkaido since it had good train infrastucture and an international / domestic airport. However, we didn't go further than Sapporo. Time was a determinant and I was less enthusiastic abt seeking koyo (autumn foliage) any more. Last bid in finding koyo was a visit to the Hokkaido Uni which was right opposite our lodging. At least, this wasn't a futile trip. There are green, yellow, brown, red all over the campus... this was more like the scene I wished for... My stay in Sapporo was marked by great food & cool weather at night. (Pics only shown half of the stuff I had eaten) Sadly, I couldn't take in many more meals. At this point in time, I also had to satisfy ... read more

Last night was pretty wild and crazy. I decided, though, that I was pretty much just drinking milk all night haha Supposedly the strawberry was a liqueur, but I think they just had a splash of that liqueur in an entire glass of milk. But ahhh strawberry milk is sooo good! yum! Anyway, where I'm going with this is that today wasn't too bad for me. Although I have to give it to the cuzes -- they manned up and were ready to go before I was. Our main objective today was lunch with Yo-ichi at the Prince Hotel where he works as a sushi chef. I guess I had no idea what to expect, but oh man was I in for a major food experience. I just recently read a (fantastic) book on sushi called ... read more

My trip up north today was fairly uneventful. Despite not knowing a lick of Japanese (I counted up today -- I know 5 words total), I managed to get on the train, transfer twice, check in and get on a plane, and even get food. Not bad for a completely foreing country. It's funny -- whenever I needed to say something, I had a reflex to say it in Spanish. If only... The train system was actually pretty nice. Very clean, quick, efficient, and cheap. They even have TVs in the local "metro" trains. High tech. I was struck by the generous variety of hairstyles. I felt like I was looking through one of those books at the hair salon -- ranging from garrish to quite stylish. I also noticed how everyone seems to have better ... read more
