In the bus on our way to the Sapporo Beer Garten I had a laughing fit over something Diana was saying. I accidentally hit my head against the seat in front of me and broke the frame of my glasses. Not a great way to start the vacation. Near the beer garden strangely, enough, there was a hobby store. We went in and started looking for glue. Not having any success I broke out the dictionary and looked up the word for glue (nori) and went to the counter. I showed them my glasses and asked: Nori wa arimasu ka? They picked some glue from the shelf behind them and showed it to me. It looked like super glue for plastics but I was not sure as I could not read the label. I pointed to ... read more

Thursday-Day Six Muroran- near Sapporo Setting the alarm for 7am feels all wrong on holidays but it's a shore day so best not waste it. We dined in the Carmen dining room deck 3 with 2 other Australian couples who complained about the terrible coffee on board, the terrible service when they had to get to the ship from Beijing, and the terrible tours they have taken. Some people are hard to please. We really had no idea of what to expect today, people were saying there was nothing to see and best get the train to Sapporo, and others just walked around the quay area and surrounding countryside unwilling to spend on either a tour or a train to somewhere. We shared a taxi with a German solo traveller and got to the ... read more

We arrived in Hakodate with no problem. Weather forecast said rain the next day. That night we decided to scout out the area, and were able to determine that we were close to all the sights necessary for our visit. Old Hexagonal fort shaped in a star formation, The morning fish market, and the tower. We also wanted to go up top the mountain but it was to dark. We found a little out of the way sashimi mom and pop restaurant and ordered our favorite dishes while watching Sumo Wrestling on TV. We watched the chef finesse with the knife and deliver us the bouquet of freshness to our loving lips!!! MMMMMMMMMM Goood!!!! We bowed our way out of the restaurant and headed back to the hotel. The wife wanted to eat Salt ramen noodles ... read more

Wednesday-Day Five I got up at 9am to do TaiChi on the basketball court on deck 13, Martin is not a well boy and slept on after his big gambling night. We are sailing to Sapporo today and will get there at 4pm. Its overcast and I can actually feel some motion underneath me. Today I shared a breakfast table with a German couple. There are so many nationalities on board, the largest group being Australians and also large groups from Korea, Singapore, and HongKong. But we have met people from Lithuania, Armenia, Holland, Brazil, England, China, Japan, Spain, USA, Thailand, France. This is the fifth day on the ship and only today did I discover Cafe Promenade on the fifth floor, part of what I call the main street. I knew that you ... read more

I am actually partway though writing a proper, chronological blog entry, but I felt the need to interrupt my regular (if sporadic) musings to share one of my New Favourite Things. If you have lived with me, or known me in certain contexts, you will probably know that I like baths. Imagine my joy at learning that there was a traditional Japanese bath in the hostel I was staying! Imagine my disappointment and disgust when I learned that it was for MEN ONLY. I could shower if I wanted, but would have to pay. That was my third worst accomodation experience since leaving New Zealand, fourth if you count the plane trip over. Osaka redeemed itself by providing me with a bath at my next hostel. It was a bit scary the first time; there are ... read more

In Tokushima, warmer days are signalling spring's return. But in Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan, walls of snow coat the rural landscapes as well as the skyscrapers of its capital city. Two weeks ago, a group of JETs plus Francesca, my sorority sister-turned-fellow-Asia-explorer, braved this frigid frontier to see Sapporo's annual snow festival: Yuki Matsuri. Alight with ice and snow sculptures, festival food and activities like ice skating, tubing and a giant ski-jump slope, the wintery city seemed to smile. In between festival exploits, I'd like to think I also experienced some of the distinct culture of Hokkaido and its native Ainu people. Before it became part of Japan, the island was a separate country with a history reminiscent of that of Native Americans in North America. In one Ainu shop, I learned to say ... read more
