Is it really Thursday tomorrow? Already? I feel like the week has just begun! It has been a crazy busy week. And a week of many firsts (as is every day in Japan...). Monday I taught my first special education class. There were 3 students from 7th and 8th grade. I gave an edited version of my self introduction and then worked on the alphabet, fruit names and animals. The real kicker was my Board of Education (bosses) sent the top dog from the office to come watch me teach for the day. Definitely a nervous wreck. But what are they going to do, fire me? he. hehehe. They left with smiles on their faces which can only lead me to believe they were pleased with my work. Because they left before I was done. How ... read more

So today was just my average day in Hojo. After an exceptionally long run for me along the river up into the mountains, I cleaned up and headed out to my local supermarket in search of milk, bread, the usual. Instead I found a line out the door of little kids with their parents. Squeezing my way through the liqour section of sake bottles so I could get around the masses to the actual food, I followed the to the other side of the room. There were the super heroes I had been watching this morning on the childrens' program! Live, in my Marakuna supermarket, right next to the bakery section! Families were patiently waiting to snap shots of their kids in front of the death destroyers. I wish I knew the name of the program ... read more

This is my first rainy Sunday. So I actully have time to sit down and work on the blog! Life has been extremely busy as of late, with the first week of school wrapping up Friday, "enkai" to attend as well as birthday parties and travel. Sitting at home this morning I am finally able to ponder the many changes affecting my life at the moment. I am settling into a routine and feeling more comfortable in my surroundings. My flat, located in the suburbia of Hojo shi, is about 20 minutes north of Matsuyama by local train. A bike ride from city center requires just under an hour, although that is considering you travel with a road bike. Many Japanese refer to my location as "inaka" but I would beg to differ. Nothing against "inaka" ... read more

Another week has gone by on the island of Yuge, and I'm not sick of it yet! In fact, I think I like it more and more everyday. As I get to know my way around, the food in the grocery store, the people's faces and the names to go with them, and my students, this place becomes an even nicer environment to live in. I even successfully paid my first month's bills! I guess that's some kind of sign that I can make it independently in Japan. And, just in case you were wondering, my fridge continues to be stocked with fruits and veggies from neighbors. It must be fig season, because it seems that I have to eat 3 a day to keep up with the rate I am receiving them. Im also beginning to get ... read more

The words “welcome to your new home” rung in my head as I made my way down from the ferry’s walkway and onto the island’s dock. I struggled under the weight of my over-packed luggage and attempted to wipe the stream of sweat from off my brow so that I would look a little more presentable, but it was useless. The heat was just too much, even at this hour. I cursed myself for ignoring the advice of others and not packing light. I must have been quite the sight that night. I had just arrived from Tokyo and was dressed in my most formal of attire. The locals all wore small towels draped around their necks or tied across their foreheads to combat the relentless heat. At that moment I could tell that carrying about ... read more

Well, it's only been about two weeks since I came back to Japan, but it feels like I've been here forever. I am teaching English on a remote island in the Inland Sea of Japan called Yuge. Yuge is part of a town made up of four islands called Kamijima. It is technically part of Ehime prefecture in Shikoku, but it's much closer to Hiroshima prefecture in Honshu. Yuge is only accessible by ferry. There are no roads or trains that connect the island to the mainland. Therefore, life here is much more isolated, rural, traditional, and laid back. There are only about 3,000 people living on this island. My job is to teach English at the nursery school, elementary school, junior high school, senior high school, and adult conversation classes. Luckily each school has a ... read more

So, early on that Wednesday morning I got up, thought I had lost my passport, did the worst shave in history and stumbled onto the bus to aiport no2. Then on the crest of a Typhoon we made the 1 hour jouney South to Matsuyama. Ehime translates as 'Love princes' and is reffered to as the sunkissed corner of Japan, not least because of its output of Mikan (oranges or madarines I forget which) but also as it sit with its coastline on the Inland Sea or Seto Naikai. Its very still and very hot (Even now as I write this on the 9th Oct the sun is shining outside and its a healthy 25 degrees outside). Piling off the plane, feeling incredibly nervous for some reason, we left the tiny airport and were greated by ... read more

Between arriving in Japan (more specifically Tokyo) and writing this blog both a lot of time has past and a hell of lot of things have happened - however, I think I am starting it just in time to catch it all before it gets lost to my ever dissolving memory I'll start off with a little on Tokyo, and although I spent only 2 days there and was a bit brain dead for the most of it, it was an all around wicked city to enter Japan through. As cities go it is pretty cool and having never been to one of those scyscraper style, billion storie building places I found it all pretty impressive - an incredibly clean and quiet city that is not exactly cosmopolitan by London standards but has a colourful mix ... read more
