I’m a little behind on blog entries. So, this entry is not about last weekend, but the weekend before. That weekend was my junior high school’s bunkasai (school festival). We’ve been preparing for it for over a month now. Sometime in September, one of my students asked me if I would play my violin with her piano accompaniment for the festival. At the time, I didn’t realize what this was all about, so I agreed. Soon she showed me two pieces she wanted me to play, and we started practicing every Friday after school (for a long time she and my speech competitions student would have to share me on Fridays). I guess because all my students enjoy singing traditional songs with my fiddle during classes, this student assumed I would be good at classical music ... read more

Travel in style! thats what I said. Kyoto is exactly as I expected it. And that is not meant in a arrogant sarcastic way. I expected it to be out of control beautiful and it was. I decided at the last minute to get a shinkansen to Kyoto for a weekend of cultural stuff and to meet with Denis. We (well, he, being the tour guide and that) choose the busiest tourist weekend of the year here but for good reason and to be honest when you live on a island it becomes quite novel to see loads of blatant tourists, and in fact a massive amount of foreigners like myself. To be honest I had been looking for an excuse to take a Shinkansen (bullet train) and although £200 in 24 hours will sound like ... read more

Today was the day we visited a high school. Like every other visit, we had a welcome meeting from the administration before going to the classrooms. Once again, we had several class periods to roam in and out of classrooms, trying to get a feel of their day. My first stop again was PE. The boys were outside warming up together in sync before going to play tennis. I would have enjoyed that, but it was too cold, and the wind was going right through me, so we went to the gym where some girls were doing basketball drills, while others were playing ping-pong. Another American and I joined in a doubles match. After observing PE for awhile, we went to several classrooms--Music, Math, Computer, English II, Calligraphy, Art, and Open Communication II. The Open ... read more

Last weekend was a great time visiting Ethan's little island out on the Inland Sea. (Hey fam, check out his blog on the same site. He is one of the only other bloggers in Ehime prefecture.) After just barely making the same ferry as the rest of the party had boarded, it was an extra hour out to his place. Definitely "lost". No grocery store, 4 ferry services each day. And it was wonderful. We made our own fun in the cold rain, hiking around his island. Next time (when its a bit warmer) we are planning a "LOST" party on the tiny island just off his shores. Camping and searching for the "others" will be the events of that night. Can't wait for spring. I had a great Thanksgiving here in Hojo. I think I ... read more

Happy Thanksgiving! For some reason, the Japanese students didn’t have school today, so we went sight-seeing around Matsuyama. The first stop was the Shiki-Kinen Musuem. Masaoka Shiki was born in Matsuyama and is well known for his literary achievements. The most significant achievement was his work on the haiku. He focused his work on nature or simple occurrences of daily life. He lived a brief life, but he attracted a number of followers and left his mark on Japanese literature. The interpreter was hard to understand, and I’m sorry to say that I didn’t get a lot of out of the museum, but they did have a nice gift shop. Next we went to the Ishiteji Temple. Just like in America, they had several tent shops leading up to the temple. Once inside, the smell ... read more

We continued our school visits and today we went to a junior high school. The students were much shyer with us at first. They seldom spoke to us first, but were excited when asked a question or just spoken to. The students were assigned homerooms and the teachers moved from class to class after each period. During this time, the students were completely free to do or say anything they wanted. Teenagers being teenagers, the rowdy boys and a few girls quickly got together and started messing around. The others talked in smaller groups and some students just stayed by themselves reading, getting ready for the next class, or working around the room either sweeping or cleaning the board. But as soon as the teacher stepped into the classroom, everyone quickly found their seat and ... read more

Finally we visited a school. Today we were guests at an elementary school and to no surprise we received a warm welcome. After a quick introduction to the teachers, we were off to the media production room for morning announcements. The equipment used to make the announcements was quite impressive. After this, we were free to visit any classroom. Some classrooms tried their best to go about their regular routine, while other classrooms were definitely entertaining their special guests from America. Whether things appeared to be orderly or pure mayhem, there was no question as to who was in charge. The teacher basically just needed to speak in a regular voice and the students listened quickly. What also greatly impressed me was the high level of tolerance to noise. A classroom next door could be ... read more

It was now time to leave Tokyo, and it was back to the airport. But this time, I had a charter bus take me to the airport. Much easier...and today we were flying to Matsuyama. It will be in Matsuyama that we will be visiting the schools. I’m looking forward to this, but first we had a couple of official meetings with college professors and the Superintendent of the Matsuyama Board of Education. We even made it on the local news channel. We also met in small groups with a few college students preparing to be teachers themselves. It was quite interesting to learn about their struggles and the similarities with our profession. After the meetings, we went sightseeing up to the top of the mountain to see the Matsuyama Castle. This was absolutely beautiful. ... read more

The season of “bunkasai” is here and everyone is busy with preparations. A “bunkasai” is a festival that all schools (even through college) hold around this time in Japan. The word “bunkasai” literally translates to “culture festival,” but it’s really just a school festival with food stands and student performances. Just as the undookai (sports festivals) and aki matsuri (fall festivals) created a lot of chaos and exhaustion earlier this fall, preparing for the bunkasai is just as strenuous, but lots of fun at the same time. However, my junior high school’s bunkasai is not till this weekend, but last weekend I had the opportunity to go to yuge shoosen’s bunkasai. Yuge Shoosen is the merchant ship school here that is like a high school and a technical college combined. The age of the students there ... read more

This past weekend I finally got off the island for the first time in about a month. I was definitely starting to get a case of the island fever, so I decided to go mountain climbing on the tallest mountain in Western Japan, Ishizuchi-san. It’s almost 2,000 meters high which is only about half the height of Mt. Fuji. However, the hiking on this mountain was just as difficult, if not more difficult than Mt. Fuji. Mt. Fuji was terrifying because I climbed it at night, and feeling like you’re up in an airplane in the dark with nothing to protect you is not a very comforting feeling. But the trails on Mt. Fuji are actually fairly manageable. The trails on Mt. Ishizuchi, however, were at times not even trails at all. I am used to ... read more
