Denis comes to town! Well, after a short memorable year in Japan, I finished up a language course and headed back to the island to the inevitable heat awaiting me. The smells and sounds that had welcomed me in a year before had once again returned during my three week stint at the YWCA Foreign language school. Happy I hadn’t retuned home a Christian or a young woman, Denis decided to pay me a visit for the glory of the island. It was actually probably one of the best weeks that I have had during my time here and it definitely the best time I have had on the island. During the summer places like Ikina come alive as various matsuris and long awaited holiday finally come around, and the Japanese allow themselves a break of ... read more

Hello Peter! Well, first yes this is a little late as your birthday was at the beginning, not the end of the month, and I apologise for that, however, at the time I was hold up at a rather small and inconvenient lodgings in the suburbs of osaka, where I was studying to be a Japanese poet. Secondly, disaster struck whilst in Osaka and the combination of too much data and my lack of tlc for my computer meant that it crashed and has been out of service ever since. Living on an island in teh middle of knowwhere has meant that the only mac shop is about 5 hours from here and very expensive so iam going to stick it out for a while. However, I have manged ot peice together the video (s) that ... read more

Tomorrow I fly over the pacific and most of the length of the U.S., back to West “by god” Virginia! It’s only for a month vacation, of course, before I come back here to Yuge for another year of madness. And I have been thinking a lot about how I’m really relieved I’m not leaving Yuge and flying back to the U.S. for good tomorrow. Yes, of course I miss my hometown, friends and family…but I’m definitely not ready to leave the “Yugetopia” as the locals call the island here. I have many goals set for the next year I will spend here, and none of them would be possible to reach anywhere else. I want to get better at my Japanese (of course); I want to learn more shamisen; I want to learn more ... read more

Sayounara! Asia » Japan » Ehime » Matsuyama By MarbarJuly 21st 2007 The aparto is looking bare. My head pounds from the last 3 nights of sayounara parties. I haven't eaten so much grub in this country since I got here. It's all part of the sayounara process here in Japan. I thought Minnesotans were long on goodbyes. My process here started 2 months ago and snowballed into the past five days. People I thought I had already bid farewell to continued to call for one more dinner. Oh, you're busy? How about lunch? You must eat one last real Japanese meal before you leave! Now I have just over 24 hours to scrub the flat, cancel cell phone accounts, close bank acc... read more

THIS BLOG HAD MANY MORE PICTURES AND VIDEOS BUT THE ANGER OF THE STORM SEEMS TO HAVE DELETED AND MESSED WITH LOADS OF THEM. Typhoon No.4 A story best told in pictures I believe. This rolled in early on Saturday morning to the sound of the Tanoy warning us to buckle down. I had just enough time to dash out, grab my plants in from eh balcony and cut down the bamboo fence I had erected to safeguard for the constant barrage of people peeping into the dojo. We had therefore 3 days to kill and Ethan and I, who had just made it off his island before it kicked in, decided to make previsions to survive the oncoming Mcwrath of god. I.e. get the beers in, get the waterproofs on, and get out there. Don’t ... read more

But last weekend I managed to escape the island during a couple of dry days to celebrate Nick’s (English teacher on neighboring island, Ikina) birthday in Hiroshima city. We went to our favorite team, the Hiroshima Carps’, baseball game against the Tokyo Giants. Japanese baseball games are really crazy and fun. Of course, I can’t compare them to baseball games in the U.S., because I’ve never been to one in the U.S. But, another American I was with, Adam, said that baseball fans in the U.S. are nowhere near as enthusiastic and crazy as Japanese baseball fans are. I believe him because the fans here just don’t stop cheering through the whole game, and it’s not just random ... read more

So, I’ve started to get complaints from several of my readers after not posting an entry for over a month. Sorry! Things have been a bit slow in the Inland Sea. I went for a month without going off the island, so I haven’t taken many pictures of anything new. My life is pretty much at school, and I don’t know how many more pictures of Japanese kids in uniforms giving the peace sign you really want to see (I never get tired of it since I know all of my students, but I don’t know how my readers feel). Well, just so that we’re all on the same page: The almost non-existent spring has passed, and we’re now in the midst of the rainy season. Last week it rained every day of the week, ... read more

Sometimes its those little things you never noticed before that bring a smile to your face. Like the signs posted at my train station about proper self conduct while riding. Or the excitement on the faces of new 1st grade elementary school students who have never seen you before and realize they can actually communicate with you. And one ought to never forget the joy of playing "dress-up" with her girlfriends. Even though the bulk of my "travels" are done I am still finding things are not too boring in the small inaka (country) town of Hojo. ... read more

The end is near, and instead of simply packing up and heading out, I feel my ties within the community have gotten stronger. Two weekends ago I took an hour trip south by train with my friend, Vania, to visit the orphanage in Uwajima. Most of the children there still have parents. It's just the parents are unable to care for the kids for some reason or another. Therefore, adoption is not an option, and most kids see their biological parents at visits once in a while. Also, its pretty taboo for Japanese to adopt unless they can't have their own kids and even then its not the norm. Family blood is a very important thing here. The visit was awesome. We ate lunch at the home and gave the kids presents for their birthdays ... read more

Sorry family. So what do I do on my island? Yes, I am hit with that troubling problem created in an effort to thrust rural Japanese into he world of the 21st centaury international culture, whether they like it or not, or having to live in basically the middle of no-where - alone. Now, that is obviously the job description and in a way what I signed up for. In a way. But it doe... read more
