Our idea had been to avoid staying in Jakarta a second time, the first time we only changed planes at the airport. The cancellation of our morning flight from Medan and the subsequent late arrival seemed to have this plan go up in smoke, in fact we arrived at Jakarta airport only around 9 p.m. But we had found out that there were direct buses from the airport to Bogor and we decided to give it a try. If there were no more buses, we could always get to the centre and find a hotel there. As very often occurs in Indonesia, information was hard to come by, but in the end we found the right place and were glad to hear that the bus service was still in operation. We even met two students who ... read more

Not just another Saturday, but my last day in Jakarta, and what will be the beginning of the end of this trip. Endah and Ferrika pick me up at the hotel and it is finally time to take on that final great landmark, yes, it is the return to the Monas tower. The gargantuan conrete tower sits in a big plaza surrounded by worn down grass plantations and visitors and picnicers seeking shelter from the blazing midday sun under the palmtrees. The base of the tower hosts a museum detailing the history to independence through a few dozen miniature displays of famous events and turning points in history. The artists have taken some liberty with the material, most notably the inclusion of the famous red and white flag flying over freedom fighters and navy ships some ... read more

A good thing about making ambitious trips is that you can stay home afterwards lazily doing nothing and still feeling proud of your achivements. I spend most of the morning in the horizontal position until finally dragging myself outside after noon to meet up with Vanessa after she has finsihed work. We head over to Kelapa Gading for her lunch break. Afterwards she helps me find those music stores we visited last time and I complete my previous purchase with some more hard to get titles. Afterwards we spend some time outside talking in the early evening. I have finally begun to realise that my trip is coming to its end very rapidly, and it is freaking me out. Those work related dreams were the first sign I guess. We end the evening with a late ... read more

Our sightseeing trip from Bukit Lawang to Lake Toba was undertaken in a minibus, which by itself was not really uncomfortable but we felt the bad road conditions (potholes etc.) much more strongly. The first part of the trip led us back to Medan, crossing wide plantations of oil palms whose fruits were just being picked and transported to oil mills, and huge plantations of gum trees. The crossing of Medan did not consume too much time, there were relatively few congestions. Our next stop on the way to Lake Toba was Brastagi, a hill resort town established by the Dutch in the early 20th century as a retreat from the heat and humidity of the lowlands. Although the town does not have many specific points of interest, its position, surrounded by active volcanoes, is memorable ... read more

Every once in a while I like to have a quick look around the countryside without numbing my behind on the hard seat of a crowded rickety bus or elbowing my way through often hopeless crowds at railway stations. But best of all I enjoy flying short domestic legs on exotic airlines, the stranger their logos or hopelessly odd their aircraft the better. Indonesia is serviced by a great number of domestic airlines, most of them making use of the ubiquitous Boeing 737-200, presumably inherited from larger airlines such as Garuda or Malaysian that got sick of them or bankrupted. My favourite trick is collecting time tables and trying to puzzle together an itinerary that will take me in a sweeping circle back to my starting point within the same day. It is no easy task, ... read more

When planning my trip to Indonesia earlier this year I had no idea that my visit would coincide with the 60th Anniversary of the Republic, which was a nice surprise. Not really knowing what to expect from it, plus the fact that various celebrations would be spread out over the gigantic city throughout the day meant that I had absolutely no idea what was going on or where I was supposed to go. Luckily I had some local help. I spent the day together with residents Endah and Ferrika who took me over to the waterfront at Ancol to watch one of those mad activities that makes you break a sweat just by looking on. As you can imagine, traffic was even worse than usual, and the entire Ancol area was vibrating like a beehive from ... read more

My first real solo trip in Jakarta is an expedition to the distant Ragunan Zoo deep in the southern suburbs. It takes almost an hour for the taxi to reach it and I give up trying to keep up with all the parts of the city we ride through. Instead of getting stuck on a major toll road the driver takes me through lots of interesting neighbourhoods past markets, schools and upmarket office towers, all mixed for great effect. As we arrive at the gates I am starting to wonder if we have really arrived where we are supposd to be, as the place looks very peaceful. The Ragunan Zoo seems to be very large, and the signs seem to be appearing completely at random. You could be walking down a route looking for crocodiles only ... read more

Stan, Myself and Gary were going to Bali to meet up with Sharon and Scott, who were on a 9 month backpacking trip. During this trip they were going to, at last, have the wedding they'd dreamed of for the last 3 years. We'd never actually backpacked before so this was going to be a whole new experience. Originally the wedding was going to take place on Phi Phi Island, Thailand December 2005. However the invitations were designed and ready to post out when the dreadful Tsunami occurred December 26th 2004. The island was hit badly and was virtually washed out. In view of this Sharon and Scott quickly changed the venue to Bali. The date was also brought forward to coincide with the dry season in Indonesia. One of the reasons The Far East had ... read more

We were back in Indonesia (almost) and the second attempt did not start very well. The flight from Kuala Lumpur to Medan took only one hour but the haze caused by severe fires on Sumatra had reduced visibility considerably, so that when approaching Medan the pilot informed us that most probably he would not be able to land and that the plane might be forced to return to Kuala Lumpur. After circling above Medan airport for some time, the pilot decided to give it a try and finally managed to land, though the landing was a bit rough. Anyway, welcome back to Indonesia! Border formalities came next and we really got our visa on arrival in exchange for hard cash ($25 per person). Well, that was a positive surprise for once. Sumatra is Indonesia’s westernmost island ... read more

Vanessa is back at work and I am spending the day on administrative duty. After doing my laundry I head out across the road to find in the following order an ATM, a travel agent and a hotel agent. By coincidence I also find six million cars in my path (and nearly manage to get hit by one), and a slew of bajaj and ojek (motorcycle) drivers wanting to oversee my safe transfer across town. Just like in China, the pavement is the place to conduct business so you end up walking in the road anyway, past noodle eateries and bajaj repair shops. After winning the jackpot over at the bank and collecting three million rupiahs I go about spending them on plane tickets to Jambi and extending my stay at the Acacia one more time. ... read more
