The blog hasnt been updated in quite a while simply because we were too busy enjoying oursleves to bother getting pictures burned onto CD and sit down to publish them on the site, which is a good thing, but as this blog is also for us to look back on we thought we better write up Bali while the memories are still fresh. We managed to get the emergency exit seats for the flight from Singapore to Bali which was a result, lots of legroom ! Customs took ages and then we had a debate with the Customs officials as the Lonely Planet said UK citizens don't need a visa for travel in Indonesia, they insisted we did but we thought they were just trying to con us out of $25 each... turns out Lonely Planet ... read more

After a comfortable late morning noodling in my room I meet up with Vanessa over at the Sarinah Busway platform and we head towards the National Museum, a stone throw from the MONAS monument (well, a pretty exhausting throw, considering the size of the MONAS compound...) to inspect the latest announced additions to the collection. Being the cartography nerd that I am I find the gigantic relief maps exhibiting the country's topography and population the most interesting, while the rest of the collected historical items leave the same bland impression I get from visiting Bronze Age exhibitions back home (it's been a while). Seeing all the imposing volcanos strewn across the islands I feel a bit bad about not having scheduled some time to see at least one. If I could pick one though, it will ... read more

Today Vanessa and I have planned to continue the waterfront tour in the old town of Kota and the Sunda Kelapa harbour area. This is an area where you can find colonial architechture and I am hoping to catch a few ships too. First though I need to run some errands in my own part of town. I really enjoy my stay at the Acacia and want to add some more nights. However, due to what seems to be a common source of annoyance in Jakarta I cannot lengthen the stay at the hotel counter since I have a discounted rate. Extending my stay can only be made at 70 USD per night, about twice as much as I pay now. A bit frustrated about this I need to find a branch office for the Kata ... read more

After the best sleep I've had in quite some time I slowly drag myself out of bed. I have arranged to meet with my friend Vanessa in the afternoon and spend the time up until then by doing the laundry and catching up on my journal. I cast an eye at the traffic below from time to time, at one point I see a funeral cortege led by a yellow truck with blaring loudspeakers pass by. The regular calls to prayer from the many nearby mosques also add to the exotic flavour. As Vanessa arrives at the hotel around 2 pm she asks me where to go. For some reason I always seem to be attracted by a city's waterfront so we get in a taxi and head north towards Ancol and the Sea World aquarium. ... read more

The dreaded day of departure has come, and as ususal much too soon. I unwillingly get up around eleven thirty to pack my things and check out from the hotel. After saying goodbye to the staff I leave directly for the airport. The check in procedure is a mess, and more than once do I need to be pointed in the right direction to find small little teller's offices where I am supposed to pay the departure tax (10 USD) etc. I buy some famed Timorese coffee for my mother and before I know it I am on the Merpati flight back to Denpasar. Arriving at Ngurah Rai those maddening chimes in the waiting hall once again make me realize that Bali and I seem to be a bit out of sync. My itinerary from this ... read more

We are in Sanur right now and have spent a lot of time making arrangements, both for the wedding and for the days surrounding it. We are still working on both but will send an e-mail very soon once everything is finalized. I have heard that some more people are coming. My friend Michelle, who I met in Japan, and her friend mark are coming. They are from New Zealand, which means we have people from four countries now! (England, America, Australia and New Zealand). About Sanur...to be honest, we were a little disappointed with the beach as it doesn't look like we expected from the pictures. However, we have been visiting a lot of other beaches in the area. Nusa Dua has a nice white sand beach, with good water for swimming around high tide. ... read more

From Lovina we headed south to Gunung Batur (Mt. Batur) and Lake Batur. The view of the mountain and the lake as we edged down the impossibly steep roads on the back of motorbikes was breathtaking. Before we arrived we had vague notions of a climb of Mount Batur and a more a well-formed conviction that would take a boat ride across the lake. Our Lonely Planet had pre-warned us about the persistant, often aggressive hawkers and touts. Right on cue, not ten minutes after our arrival as we sat in a restaurant*, they arrived. It's not what you want is it? To find yourself forced to battle your in-built English politeness and tell someone to sod off with a mouth full of nasi-goreng? Anyway we were there and the view was lovely and that was ... read more

There's something about morning flights. Specifically, there's the feeling of anguish as you go to bed the night before wondering if you will doze off and sleep through the buzz of the alarm clock. And having to get up at five sure adds to the tension. All is well though, I check out in good order and after a nervous short wait in the street manage to flag down a taxi. Today's haul is a mere four hours, and it feels good knowing they will be spent in the hands of a respectable airline, even though the added comfort comes at the price of being far from exotic. The wide body is mainly filled with western tourists, and upon landing at Ngurah Rai we are herded into two lots, those qualifying for a Visa on Arrival, ... read more

Chronodementia: 'a lack of ability to judge, estimate, tell or understand time'. I've just made it up but I feel Elaine and I may have it. We really have lost all sense of time. Which is fine until we need to get on a metal-bird for Kuala Lumpur ('visa-hop'*). A good example of our new illness is Yogyakarta: we only meant to stay for a few nights - we stayed a week! In fairness we were ill (you don't need details... trust me) and the swimming pool tricked us. It made us lie next to it and not do a lot. That's our story and we're sticking to it. We have did however manage to see the Prambanan Hindu temple and the Ramayana ballet. Around the temple there were people trying to sell little wooden whistles. ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Flores July 30th 2005

The island of Flores stretches over 350 km east to west, but by road it makes easily the double, Labuanbajo is 528 km from Maumere, which is not yet the island's most eastern limit. Flores is crossed by a mountain range from west to east, and by rivers and valleys, which result in extraordinary landscape but also makes the roads more difficult to travel. But once we were lucky concerning transport. Last evening, when Stephan had gone to the Tourist Information enquiring about bus connections, he met a couple of young Danes who had already hired a car for tomorrow morning (there was also a Dutch guy on board) and they were glad to reduce the costs by sharing the price with two more travellers. This car was empty and the driver had to reach Maumere ... read more
