Our first stop eastwards was to the island of Lombok where we had planned a stay at one of the Gilis, three tropical islands off Lombok's northwest coast, for swimming and snorkelling. This sounds all very good, but we had to scrap these plans due to lack of time. Leaving Bali turned out to be easier than expected, we caught one bemo after the other until the port of Padangbai. A bemo is a small van where the seating benches are placed lengthwise, and represents the main form of public transport. For foreign tourists this kind of transport has some challenges, the haggling for example. After such along stay in India we had got used to it (at least we thought so) but found the Indonesian levels more extreme than the Indian ones. Indonesians can be ... read more

It's a tough life being a small but idyllic tropical island. The weight of expectation is upon you and you can rarely deliver because most times that expectation needs fulfilling internally, not externally. To expectation is added the weight of need and the weight of greed - everyone wants a piece of you. Like the old nag from Raskolnikov's childhood, people watch whilst you are flogged to death by your master, and it is the people riding in the back of the cart that shout the most encouragement. I dunno. It's usually harder to beat Mother Nature than we think. Maybe it'll take an empire. Like the old boxer from Hemingway fighting his last fight, even though the wise-guys think they've got all angles covered, inside the ring she's in control. Wiry strength beats beefy strength. ... read more

Indonesia consists of approximately 17,000 islands. Indonesia Map We made it to eight, which isn't bad going. First stop was the island of Bali, probably the most touristy island of them all. We were craving some beach action after cloudy and humid Hong Kong, so we headed down to Kuta and found a nice place about two minutes walk from the beach. This was our first experience of low prices on our trip and boy was it good! I got a great air-conditioned double room (with TV) to myself for the equivalent of about 8GBP per night. The hotel had a gorgeous swimming pool, its own restaurant, room service, laundry service... it was heaven after the smelly hostels of America and the miniature beds of Japan! And for half the price! The peak season for Kuta ... read more

We went to Jakarta... it was rubbish. That's possibly a little unfair; like all big SE Asian cities it was hot and crowded and smelly and fast and really just a bit too much when you've been on a plane for million hours and don't quite know what day it is. We stayed in Jarkarta for two nights and then, on the advice of a Welsh school teacher (why not!?), jumped on the train to Bogor. Bogor's main attraction (apart from not being Jakarta) is it's botanical gardens. They're very pleasant and thanks to Bogor's altitude that bit cooler than the capital. We spent a couple of days in the town with a visit to the gardens just about our most strenuous activity. Indonesia doesn't have very many Western tourists about at the moment. Whatever the ... read more

It's been about two weeks since we last wrote and there a couple reasons for that. 1) we've been chillin' like Bintang Beer in Bali, and didn't want to even think about sitting in an internet cafe when we had such beautiful scenery to soak up. 2) the only internet connections they had in Bali and Thailand were about 14.4K modem connections. Can you believe that? Oh, the travesty. So here we are, on Day 21 of our honeymoon and we are sitting in Siem Reap (Cambodia) International Airport waiting for our flight back to Hong Kong. Funny, this place is an international airport but its the size of my elementary school. Acutally, smaller. There are only four gates here, and the security guy is also the bathroom attendant. Seriously, after he checked my passport he ... read more
