Today is the one-year anniversary of the tsunami. It's been an emotional time for many of our local staff, and there's been quite a few that have gotten sick the past couple of weeks. Some of our employees lost their entire families, some lost their parents and some are still living in temporary shelters (tents). I've been here for 2 months but the scale and horror of the tsunami is still difficult to comprehend. When driving around, you can see enormous boats and other things that were carried inland by the waves but are too big to remove now. Every few kilometers there's a patch of land about the size of a basketball court with a fence around it and a sign that says "mass graves." In Calang, a coastal village the IRC works in, only ... read more

OK, so it’s been a while since I made a Blog entry, what can I say I’ve been busy, it is the silly season after all. So I may as well get straight to the point: Christmas Day. Now I’d presumed that being overseas in foreign lands, Christmas would be a rather subdued affair. I was wrong. I thought that I was on top of things in October when I brought my family Christmas presents in Malaysia and posted them home. I had no idea how busy I was going to be! Little did I know that Christmas would turn into a full scale Logistical Operation! Nick planned a full Christmas dinner for the Expats at IRC and a few hangers on. I offered to help, and between running around buying vegetables, wine glasses and everything ... read more

Already by the time I arrived in Bangkok I had thought about trying to reach Australia overland, meening to get there without flying. Partly because of getting a better feeling for the distance and partly because overland travel is cheaper and more interesting. My first real attempt to find a boat going to Australia was in Port Klang. But all the shipping agencies did not offer any kind of passenger service. The next possibility I had heared about was from Bali. People told me, that Australian cruise ships go there and sometime take additional passengers on their way back. But when I reached Bali no Australian cruise ship could be seen anywhere... I think it just was the wrong season. So I traveld from one Indonesian Island to the next, getting closer and closer to Australia ... read more

After some days in Ende the ferry finally came to take me to the southern-most Indonesian island, to Timor. Since East Timor has become an independent country the Indonesian part is called West Timor. The only big town over there is Kupang which is still quite small. Among the local are a couple of Australiam escapists, some with Indonesian wifes. They meet at 'Teddy's Bar' every evening to play pool, stare at the sea, and get drunk. After a few days I found their company pretty depressing... they were not too helpfull for my plans of a boat to Australia. But the steak sold there was awesome after all the Padang food. During my inquiries for my planed boat trip to Australia I had another go with the local transport system which I had first got ... read more

Dreamland is on the way to Uluwatu, south of Bali. It started as a big project in real estate from the son of the former president. After the elections the new president claimed the land back for the people of Bali. There are only big roads who are already in a very poor condition becaus nobody takes care of them. At the end there are beautiful big clifs with white sandy beaches. Small restaurants and losmen are build al the way up the clifs. During the day many tourists from Kuta visit Dreamland. At night the visitors are gone and the place is even more beautiful. At night you can have dinner in front of the beach, I had fresh grilled squit with french fries, mmmmmm !!!! A good night sleep was not easy because of ... read more

I hosted a holiday party this past weekend at my house and, if I do say so, it was so much fun! Stats for the party: • 23 people from 11 different countries • We sang Xmas carols (not quite DePiero family style - more british pub drinking style) • Lots of dancing (latin of course, but Robbie Williams too - sorry richie) • 17 Swapped gifts - far too civilized. We played by British rules, not Sicilian. Interesting gifts: blow up spiderman balloon; Sphere handbook • About 5 or 6 Indonesian friends showed up - the first Christmas party for all of them • Everyone was very appreciative of our homemade Xmas decorations, improvised decorated (palm) tree and initiative to have a party • Lots of drinking - people brought beer that they bought clandestinely ... read more

During my days in Ende I got to know a bit more about the religious conflict between the islamic majority and other religious groups. About 88% of the Indonesian people are muslims. About 8% are christian and 3% are buddhist or hindu. The center of the islamic society is Java where most of the Indonesian people live. Flores in contrast is 95% catholic with only a small islamic minority. In Ende I visited the local church during a christening procedure for 69! children. Afterwards I had the opportunity to talk to a local journalist. He said that the christian community was very affraid of a bomb attack on the upcoming christmas, the church full of people being an easy target. There had not been any problems with the local islamic minority but for several years already ... read more

By the time I was in Bali I decided to pass through the rest of Indonesia as fast as possible. On reason was the weather. The rainy season was full on and I met hardly any other backpackers outside Bali. In addition I was longing for a break from all that asian food and life style. I hoped to be able to reach Australia for christmas. Since flight prices from Bali to Darwin were still considerable and I had been told about a boat connection from Timor to Darwin I just took the next bus available and changing from bus to ferry and back I made my way across all the island towards Timor. In Ende on Flores I had to wait for a couple of days for the next ferry to Timor.... read more

After a very long bus ride right into Jarkarta I found myself with little motivation of exploring this big city. So I took another very long bus ride right across all of Java and with the ferry to Bali. The touristic centre of Bali is Kuta, a beach town on a peninsular south of the capital Denpasar. Between the main street and the beach a maze of alleys offers every kind of accomodation, food, and souveniers a backpacker might think of, a bit like Bangkoks Khao Sarn Road relocated at a beach. But most of the places were pretty deserted. A local shop owner told me that several bombings, the last one in October 2005, scared away the masses of beach bums and surfers that are generally heading for the place. On the last incident two ... read more
