Well, not really. The sunburn actually came from thailand, but it sounded about right. We have found Jakarta to be hospitable and humid, with a chance of thunderstorms. We would love to tell you about all of the sights we saw and interesting new things we ate, but we didnt do much exploring. Hal has spent the last few days reconnecting with his high school buddies, and visiting with teachers and family friends. It is a mighty strange place to visit, a constant contradiction. Guilded mansions built of marble are fronted by shacks built of wood and trash, or pushcart street vendors. The neverending traffic is a frantic mixture of chauffered cars and motorbikes. The department store is a collection of individual vendors as in a market, together in one large florecent lit a/c'd seven floor ... read more

October 17 to November 15 - Kuta and the south bit of Bali is very developed and was very empty, just two weeks outside of the latest round of bombings so I wouldn't call it a festive place anyway. Back on a motorcycle for 11 days, Bali requires an international drivers license, which I don't have, but I do have photoshop. Alright, it may not be smart but it should at least reduce the amount of the bribe I'll need to pay should I get pulled over. Some dive sites around Bali feature bleached out coral due to El Nino several years ago and fishing dynamite style, I picked a gorgeous site in the north west tip of the island, Manta rays and eels were the highlights. Lovina, north Bali, was a ghost town, maybe 6 ... read more

Thanks to all of you out there who have made our blog such a popular read- nearly 900 hits. You guys either really love us, or are really bored at work, or maybe some of both. However, despite the overwhelmingly positive response, we felt the need to clarify two items. 1. Obviously, our life doesn't suck. If you failed to see the sarcasm in our very popular entry "my life sucks" we suggest you get a sense of humor. This is not to offend, but rather a gentle suggestion meant to improve the quality of your life, as well as the lives of those around you. 2. "Snorking" was not a spelling error, just a funny thing folks in Ko Lanta say when referring to the activity we all know as snorkeling- a "Lost in Translation" ... read more

OK, this is where I feel a little guilty, and really lucky. Once I officially got the job, I moved into one of the NGO houses. For someone who had spent the last month backpacking around Sumatra, living in some fairly grotty accommodation just having space to call my own was luxury. But it was far more than just that. I am sharing the house with an older Peruvian doctor called Atilio. He’s great, we’re already planning the first party! There’s a DVD player, Satellite TV, Stereo, Fully equipped kitchen. Everything provided! Every house has its own driver, to take us where we want to go; plus a cleaner who comes in during the week. It’s been a while since I’ve had someone clean my room! I feel kinda like I don’t deserve all this, I ... read more

Down Indonesia Way. . . Hello! We are in Jakarta and doing well, despite the intense humidity. Today, our life sucked so much that we got upgraded to business class on our flight here. It was totally lame how the seats fully reclined and I was forced to choose my own movie or television program. So what have we been up to? Well, we finished the relaxation portion of our vacation off in fine style by renting a little 100cc motorbike, upon which we both rode to visit the countryside of beautiful Ko Lanta. And of course we were wearing helmets, as it would be totally reckless and stupid not too. I had a fun time putting my life in Hal's hands, and Hal had a fun time trying to kill me over and over again. ... read more

Well here’s where things kinda just happened. I returned from my tropical island, and the next day, Nick brought me into the office of the NGO he worked for. He’d already talked to the head office in New York, and they were pretty keen to take me on. In fact they said that if Nick didn’t want me in Aceh, they had work for me in Africa! It was just a case of them checking out my reference - something that I don’t think anyone has ever done for me! Oh yeah and the medical test.... For those of you who don’t know, my biggest phobia in the WHOLE world has been needles. I was convinced that I was physiologically incapable of giving any sort of blood sample. But it only goes to reason that to ... read more

In a nutshell... Charming group of islands of the north-west coast of Lombok. Great place to get away from the city madness and enjoy the Lombok hospitality and warmth. Good to visit again and again... Getting Around… Other than on foot, transport on the island is provided by small little ponycarts or the Cidomos. These are wooden rickety carts drawn by a pony and the driver. The carts and ponies are adorned with many bells and local customary ribbons and can be heard before they are seen. It costs 5000 IDR per person one way during the day and twice of that after dusk. We made friends with one of the drivers and kinda of hired him during our entire stay to bring us to and from Blue Marlin Dive and our hotel at Villa ... read more

So what does an Australian guy who works in Indonesia, with only 2 days holiday do when there's no ferry - He charters a boat, and drags me along for the ride (and to share the cost). Sure, it totally blew the days budget, but, hey it'd be an adventure. As it turned out abit too much of an adventure. A 6m boat, which the driver pretty much surfed down the ocean swells, a diesel engine right next to my ear, and I got drenched. But at least by the end of it I was on a tropical paradise. There was one catch to my plan. This being the biggest holiday of the year, and this being the best holiday destination for the 1800 ex-pats in Banda Aceh, accommodation was somewhat at a premium. However I ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud November 2nd 2005

We took a local flight from Flores to Denpasar, Bali and then hopped in a taxi with a Dutch couple to the cultural town of Ubud, about 2 hours from Kuta. It is a lovely place - the streets lined with art galleries, craft shops, clothes stalls, bead shops and endless cafes and restaurants. We found a lovely Balinese style guesthouse with a pool, and this became our oasis and retreat from the heat after long walks in the surrounding paddies and fields. We left early our first morning there and took a long trek along a river gorge, through rice paddies and unbelievably green fields. It was hot and humid already at 0730am. We reached the top of a steep climb along the ridge and came upon a couple of small houses and local artists' ... read more
