Ok, so welcome to our last blog from Bali. We are flying out to Tokyo tonight at 5 to midnight! YUK! Since our last entry we have spent much time sleeping, swimming, eating (sounds a lot like our last post huh?), browsing the shops and stalls and catching up with Toby and his family for little Tasya's 3rd birthday. It's been bliss! Almost a week ago we left Ubud and moved onto our next hotel in Sanur beach, however all did not go as expected... There seems to be a charming custom at Bali hotels to greet the guest with a cold drink. Usually a delicious fruit juice blend from our (limited) experience. This was no different upon arrival at our hotel in Sanur except the drink appeared to be a weak mix of Bi-Lo's finet ... read more

Im in Bali, safe and sound in an artsy dancy cultural village called Ubud. Very nice, already seen a few monkies, shared a room with a HUGE gecko and basically chilled out since arrival. I think i am going to travel all through Indonesia, so maybe just spend 14 days in bali. Im staying away from Kuta, the infamous cluby resorty douchebaggy area that everyone goes to. I cant afford to waste my money on shopping and getting wasted. I have not talked to anyone just yet, a few locals, but im keeping mostly to myself. Kind of a change in the norms of ty, but im pretty comfy so far. Going to go to yoga class at 4pm, im gonna try and hit up as many classes as i can while in bali, as its ... read more

After few hours of sleep and a 4 hour flight, we arrived safely in Jakarta. The first difference, the heat, was noticeable straight away. A sign saying “Welcome to Jakarta. Death Penalty for Drug Traffickers” was also quite noticeable in the arrivals hall….a warm welcome indeed! Once we had picked up our luggage, we met our driver Kiki who would accompany us for our 10-day stay in Indonesia. It soon became clear why a driver is recommended: cars overtake you on the right, or the left, there are a lot of tollbooths where you’re not really sure how much it really is you’re supposed to pay…so not looking like an oblivious tourist is definitely an advantage. As it was the rainy season we were surprised at the clear blue skies, but as we got nearer to ... read more

Hello, Who would have guessed that out of all of the airports we have been to, that bali would be the first one to really test us! We arrived after a late but short flight, and we had arranged a pick up from the hotel that we were staying at, so it would be waiting for us when we arrived. But we really couldn't believe how long it took us to get through customs and passport control. First, we joined one queue not realising we were in the wrong one because we had to buy a visa so we asked where we should get that from as there were so many queues. We got told to go to another riduculously long line of people, here we waited and waited barely moving, until a guy from another ... read more

...nor Connecticut, Florida, Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming... by Christina And honestly! what was I expecting anyway? As I reflected on that in our first week here in Bali I realized whatever pictures of a place I might have in my head it is always different. Well, for one thing I am always surprised by how much the modern world lives in these places. And how much our western culture has invaded and in some ways spoiled them. But, I had gotten some impressions from a particular friend who had visited Bali 6 or 7 times. Only, she hadn't been here for 12 years. She had spent time in Ubud, a popular town where many foreigners like to hang out and told me that except for the main street none of the streets were paved and I ... read more

It's been nearly two weeks since I've been here and it's been a stay that has yielded very little in terms of memories or achievements. I've been itching to get on with the trip since the first two days here, but finally we're on the move in the next day or two so I can finally write a summary of my trip here. I'll try not to be too negative though about the place in light of many reponses to my previous piece! Yesterday saw us spend a whole day on the bike - absolutely and utterly arse numbing. Plus, it was torrentially (and in the sense of Asian torrential rain, which means it was HEAVY) raining and this combined with the night light means it's left me questioning how the hell we got home safe. ... read more

Now the hectic lead up to our trip is past we have had time to reflect on that time. More than ever now we can see how much we relied on the support of our families and friends. So we must shout out a big thank you to our parents in particular. To Faye & Russell for allowing us to have our 'Bon Voyage' gathering at their house, to Pat & John for letting us stay with them in the last week before we left and for all of them for the amazing help in getting our apartment ready for renting out. Their support continues in many ways and our appreciation does also. Also a huge thanks to Deb and Steve and to Bronwyn for all jumping to our rescue when we were in rather a ... read more
