After a couple of bus exchange and a suggestion from Lonely Planet, I ended up at Losmen Setia Kawan, near Jl Malioboro, down the alley of Gang II. Whoa, my heart skipped a beat when I enter the losmen. Its like stepping into a art gallery! The walls were beautifully decorated with beautiful oil paintings, and the rooms! My jaw almost drop when I saw the beautiful wall murals and the batik bed sheets. Every corner of the losmen was carefully and beautifully designed. For only 60,000RP (RM22), I get to indulged in one of Jogya's finest guest house! Day 1 in Jogja was spend wandering in the streets of Malioboro. Now Jl Malioboro is some sort like Khaosand Rd in Bangkok. Only, it made Khaosand Rd pale in comparison! The streets of Maliobora is full ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta February 1st 2008

Hey everyone, so this is what we got up to in Bali: We stayed in Kuta which is at the heart of tourism in a lovely hotel called the Barong, we had ac, free breakfast and there were 2 swimming pools that we were free to use. The weather in Bali is hot and humid, on our last day it was 34'C but this was the hottest day. We were lucky that the wet season had ended early, however there were a few downpours, and the occasional thunder. We were a 10min walk from the beach which was a pretty beach although slightly polluted with litter. The water was warm, we have never been in such a warm sea and we think this made surfing easier! The waves were great for us beginners (they have bigger ... read more

It was great to be on the road again although few hours ago I almost gave up RM300+ worth of air ticket due to some not so nice vibe from the office. Not forgetting dad being a bit apprehensive on letting me go on a short trip before Chinese New Year. Understandable, who in the right mind would let their children fly to another country a few days before CNY and risk not having them coming back? You know, parents think the worst for their children. But as I've told dad many time, we attract what we fear. If anything were to happen to me, who else to be blamed to have injected all the negative thoughts? Certainly not me. The flight to Solo was a pleasant one and it gets even better because I am ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Sumatra » Banda Aceh February 1st 2008

Arrived in Banda all very organised with the Taxis set price 90,000Rp fixed from the airport all set up for all the NGO people the number of which are now dwindling. Banda seems OK. First impressions of the Tsunami aftermaths personally I can’t just go to such a place and pretend nothing has happened. We talked to many people about the tragedy people who experienced it, people who were there already and the first outsiders in, people from NGOs who had been working there and how it all went afterwards. The Military were some of the best with the right equipment and organisation to sort things the quickest. I was working in Thailand at the time and travelling offshore through Utapao airport. This is the old B52 bomber base they used as one of the places ... read more

After a nite @ GRAND INN COME in Bangkok, I headed for paradise! (k Grand Inn Come was the closest, cheapest hotel to the airport) After 6 weeks wrapped up in layers of clothing & thick winter jackets, boots, gloves, scarves + nosebleeds every morning, it was a joy to be in a t-shirt, shorts & sandals! I'd like to tell u that this would be a long blog, but I'm afraid to say I didn't get up to very much in my stay in Bali. There really is nothing better than lying by the pool everyday, getting a massage at bodyworks (this must-try heaven offering massages, facials, pedis, manis, hair services) & eating at the best beach front restaurants. Managed to get off my back (from lying in the sun...what were u thinking?) to spend ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Java » Bromo Tengger Semeru January 28th 2008

We arrived in Surabaya from Kuala Lumpur and made it our immediate plan to get over towards Mount Bromo. This entailed us getting a taxi to the bus terminal which would take us across to Probolinggo, our base for the climb. Touts greeted our arrival, and we were lucky to grab a taxi with a lovely guy who dropped us at the terminal, largely in order to avoid the mobbing we'd receive. We then sat for a bonecrunching three hours on a rickity bus to Probolinggo and landed directly (probably as a result of direct collusion) and conveniently at the "travel agent" who organised our trip up the mountain and our trip across to Bali. After a good wait and some money grabbing by the agent, we set off for an incredibly long climbh up the ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Riau Archipelago » Batam January 27th 2008

"Batam, is a very holey city", we were told on arrival into Indonesia with our good friend Tony. "Every road is covered in holes! hahaha" Tony exclaimed right afterwards. We took the ferry from Singapore straight to Batam spur of the moment for a weekend getaway. We wanted a taste of third world country before Thailand, and before we knew it, we were right in the middle of it. Once we exited the Batam Harbourfront, culture shock hit us with a strong force. We drove through the streets towards Batam Centre with Tony to translate for our taxi driver. As we gazed from inside our protected vessel we witnessed Indonesian life before our eyes. Roadside vendors infested the streets along with mopeds and dirt bikes. Families of 5 were packed onto tiny suzuki bikes while speeding ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Sumatra » Bukit Lawang January 26th 2008

Iwan the our guide from the Jungle Inn had been suggesting we take a trip to Tangakahan About 2.5 hours from Bukit Lawang (it took about 3.5 in the end) we can go for a day trip allegedly. Well that’s possible but who would want to. Not wanting to spend so long travelling in one day we decide on an overnight. This is where we screw up having got friendly with Iwan and liking his good knowledge and attitude to the wildlife. So we don’t check it out anywhere else. This would have been easy to do. Iwan said we had to come back to Bukit Lawang to get back to Medan we already had a flight to Banda Ache booked. Left one of our Bags at Iwans house and meet up with the chain smoking ... read more
