London, New Delhi, Mumbai, Hong Kong, Melbourne, Darwin, Sydney, Phnom Penh, Hanoi, Kunming, Macau, Kota Kinabalu, and now Ubud - that's the list of places I've been to twice since I began my travels, though only a handful were because of actually wanting to return rather than having unavoidable admin motives. Ubud required revisiting in order to meet up with LA Woman, whose itinerary for 2008 was otherwise rarely going to be coinciding with mine. Ubud in rainy season was a rather different prospect to when we had visited last September. An oppressive heat and humidity weighed on the town, discouraging activity and permitting only sweaty forays out for lunch and dinner. Regular monsoonal downpours created cataracts down the stone stairs of the guesthouse's gardens - at least their coming brought with them a blessed breeze ... read more

The kids in Bali have been one of the highlights of our experience here! Overall, they are so happy, and at least smile if not overflow with enthusiasm toward us. As you will see below we had a good time photographing them. They are not shy. ... read more

Everywhere we have been in Bali we have had many opportunities to interact with the people. Even when few words were exchanged William was there with the camera and people were willing to let us photograph them. People were interested in talking with us no matter how much english they could speak and liked to practice with us. We enjoyed their interest though it was often motivated by their need to promote their service or product. It amazed me that they never had an attitude about our not speaking their language (only in France, right?). In Ubud and other populated areas in the southern third of Bali many guys (young and old) hang around the streets waiting to be hired to drive you somewhere with their bike or car. I would always smile at them and ... read more

Geo: -8.51927, 115.263So today Made and Ketut (The Guest House's Official Driver) and I took off after brunch for a day out. (I now have brunch everyday, I'm getting so lazy here in Ubud!) We headed up to Bali Bird Park and the Reptile park adjacent to it. I've uploaded a few of the highlights here. The bird park had lots of birds just loose, flying/walking around the grounds. They were all fascinating to me, so many I'd never even heard of before (and I'm not even really a bird lover). Most all of them were from the Southeast Asia area, so if you were a local visiting the park you probably wouldn't be that impressed, but I don't think too many locals visit there. I was impressed. Except for the bats, they had huge 2 ... read more

Geo: -8.51927, 115.263So, this is not a tourist thing. I was given specific instructions on how to dress and act in order to attend a ceremony in the Village Temple in Ubud. There are ceremonies all the time, I think sort of like how Christians and Jews visit church and Synagogue weekly, though I'm not sure the Hindu ceremony's are weekly - I haven't figured out their schedule yet. In any event, I had to wear a sarong - no pants in a temple, even for the men. I needed long sleeves and a sash/belt for my waist. I did my best with what I had, my guesthouse had a sash I borrowed, but my plain white linen shirt was a poor comparison to the elaborate lace and sequined shirts that the ladies of Ubud had ... read more

but i certainly dont need indo...hehe. Im alive, in Yogyakarta (pronounced Jogja-karta). I got here yesterday, and after being away for almost 3 weeks, i got a sudden, slight pannik attack. I have came to a realization...i have never every been completly alone for this long, in my life. My days are spent mostly in solitude, reading a book, or daydreaming, mostly of my gorgeous girlfriend, who for some stubborn reason, i decided to leave behind. Not only am i alone, but nobody speaks my damn language. So i went to call her, to get her to calm me, and the skype (a computer program that uses headphones and a mic to talk for very cheap to phones all over the world) was being screwy...which made my pannik attack almost take over. A few deep breaths, ... read more

Vijf duiken brachten ons naar vijf verschillende sites ... read more

Geo: -8.51927, 115.263So I totally vegged by the pool today, had dinner on my front porch (room service) and only because the Gamelan Orchestra was playing literally next door at the Lotus Temple pond did I venture out for the show tonight. I've decided to stay in Ubud through next thursday march 6th for the BIG festival that precedes Nyepi ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyepi). They villagers have been working on an Uggah-Uggah (I'm so totally spelling that wrong) all week. It's a huge two story sized statue of a big fat man, kind of like a Macy's Day Float. It was just wire mesh a few days ago, but he got some coverings recently and is actually starting to look like something. The men first made some bamboo scaffolding and put a big tarp over it (to protect ... read more
