Geo: -8.16799, 115.027Bali only has one Buddhist Monastery so I went to see it. It's located on the north shore a little bit up a volcano. I rented a motorbike for the day and rode up. (I am SO getting one when I settle back in SanFrancisco - I'm addicted)The monastery is pretty close to a local hot spring, so after the mornings heat walking around the monastery I went to the springs for the afternoon. It was a great day, super relaxing.... read more

Bali- Dengue Fever This weeks Bali Advertiser, warns of a Dengue Fever Pandemic. Dengue Fever can be lethal but is mostly a flu like fever that comes and goes without serious damage. However, Bali is famous for “If you don't mention it, it doesn't exist” attitude. No travel warnings exist about Dengue Fever, so bring your big dope as Dengue Fever is passed through mosquitoes. Don't be fooled by the tiny mosquitoes here in Bali. Compared to the bird like mosquitoes in The Pacific Northwest of BC, they look harmless. But they'll bite you and be gone before you can swipe at them, sometimes leaving behind a virus or two. After discussing this with many locals, it does seem the “Pandemic” claim is somewhat overblown. However, Dengue Fever IS present in Bali though and it can ... read more

Ulu Watu Ulu Watu, a famous surfing area on the southwest tip of Bali, is an area we heard about upon arrival as a “must see” for its big waves. On the map of Bali, the Ulu Watu Temple is a prominent tourist land mark. So, yesterday being Sunday, we decided to leave out computers behind and go tramping in Ulu Watu, about an hours ride from Canguu. We stopped near the airport to take photos of Bali's most famous sculpture. I'm posting pictures here, which tell a far more accurate story than mere words. It's by far the largest, most impressive and stunning sculpture I've ever seen. It's at least 100' in length and probably 30' high depicting a mythological fight between the brothers Rama and Arjuna, lead by 6 wild looking horses and a ... read more

Geo: -8.27944, 115.606This beach is so gorgeous. It's a small little town, with just a few shops and even fewer restaurants. And I thought Ubud was small. All eight "beach sellers" knew me by name after day 1. And I was only on the beach in the evenings after SCUBA. Great town for doing nothing at all. Or maybe getting your SCUBA certification!... read more

Before heading to Indonesia from India I planned a 4 day break in Thailand. I remember just last month upon my arrival in Bangkok. I found it to be a bit dirty, with crazy traffic, well compared to Japan anyway. After spending a month in India, I now find Bangkok to be a really clean, well run organized place. I love Thailand! It's always a pleasure to come back to. I left Bombay at 7:30pm, took a plane at 11:20pm that was full of 500 mosquitoes for 6 hours arriving in Bangkok in the early morning without a moments sleep. For some reason the local bus that drops me at Khao San road has been canceled so I had to take a series of very packed local buses taking 3 hours to get there. This is ... read more

Geo: -8.09594, 114.521I arrived on the North Side beach town of Lovina on Wed night. I stopped at Gitgit twin waterfalls, and Pura Ulun Temple at Lake Beratan. Very beautiful. I found a hotel (king bed, A/C, pool, 200ft from beach, $12) and then Spice Dive shop. I signed up (the only one there, it's low season), and had my first day of lessons on friday. all day in the pool with my instructor Augustus. I learned all the basics, how to breathe, what to do when my mask or regulator falls off, the hand signals, how to assemble/disassemble the gear, etc. Also, the wet suite was short sleeve and short legged, so I got some really great tan lines (Ugh!).On Saturday I had my first two open water dives, just off Lovina Beach. There is ... read more

Hi all Well I am back in Ubud and getting ready to start the second half of the Indonessian trip. One person is leaving us and 6 more are joining. After I last updated we carried on along the north coast of Bali till we ended up so far in the northeast of Bali we could see Java. Our hotel was right on the beach but most of us decided to go swimming that afternoon in the pool and try work on our suntans. That evening we eat at the hotel and as there was nothing outside had a drink and headed back to our rooms. Tom in the room next room as he broke the mosquito net earlier on. Now the next morning I was up earlier then everyone else (only by 30 mins) and ... read more

After I last blog we travelled down to the coast and set up camp for the night. There was a great pool but the whole area had nothing to do. We had some dinner and then hung out with the rest of the crew before heading back to bed. My back and neck was pretty sore so i had trouble sleeping, combined with the fact i was enclosed in a huge mosquito net didnt make it too fun. On Thursday we went to deer island which was really pretty. I had a choose either to snorkel or to scuba dive and I decided to snorkel. This was really fun and definatly on the top 2/3 things ive done since ive been away. I went really far out and saw some huge caves, maybe with a 40ft ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta March 13th 2008

I've finaly left sri-lanka. It's kinda hard to believe and it's taking some adjusting. For example, I'm now learning how to ride a motorbike. In bali here, you dont have a choice or any-other method of getting to the breaks so... I'm learning. I wouldn't say that bali or kuta in particular is the best place to learn but so far so good and no accidents. The waves have been alright so far. I wouldn't say that theyve been better then in sri-lanka but this is the way it goes. You can honestly see htough how good the waves could be if just the swell would change or pick-up a little but that'll come soon. For now, my ankle is as swollen as can be from a little well placed knock of the board write on ... read more
