Feb 9-12: So the story about our LOOOONNG journey to Lombok. We had purchased tickets for bus transport from Legian directly to Padang Bai (through a transport company called Perama)--we were told it would be about a 1.5-2 hours bus ride. When we got on the bus--and it was a pretty old bus with NO air conditioning & plastic/leather-covered seats--the driver started reading out names of different cities. He must have read out like 5 names! I was worried that we'd now be making lots of stops and that a 2-hour bus ride would turn into 5! Thankfully, when we stopped at Ubud (the 1st stop) they said passengers who were going to Padang Bai could get off and transfer to another bus that would go directly to the ferry terminal. I thought this second bus ... read more

Allah Allah Allah akbar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Respekt respekt men gensidig ja tak... Regnen silede ned ... read more

Vi vågnede af at blive rystet rundt. Alting hoppede.... For detaljer - se nedenstående link: Earthquake Details Magnitude 5.8 Date-Time Friday, September 18, 2009 at 23:06:57 UTC Saturday, September 19, 2009 at 07:06:57 AM at epicenter Time of Earthquake in other Time Zones Location 9.271°S, 115.570°E Depth 71.6 km (44.5 miles) Region SOUTH OF BALI, INDONESIA Distances 65 km (40 miles) WNW of Mataram, Lombok, Indonesia 75 km (45 miles) SSE of Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia 235 km (145 miles) ESE of Jember, Java, Indonesia 1035 km (640 miles) ... read more

So, we left Gili T on the local boat over to Lombok. When you arrive on Lombok you have to run the gauntlet at bangsal harbour, they drop you off at the harbour and you walk about 10 mins up the road to the bus station. On the way you are harassed and generally annoyed by hundreds of people trying to take your ticket, sell you a ticket, sell you a sharks tooth necklace and well pretty much just hindering you! We made it to the bus station and managed to hold on to our ticket ( a few people gave theirs to someone and had to pay all over again!) and we were eventually herded onto the worlds worst minibus where we stopped en route with the bus full to get a bit of air ... read more

Bangsal Harbour I took a cidomo for 5000rupiah instead walking to terminal where perama shuttle bus will pick us. There were 4 adults, backpacks, 1 fat kid and the driver on the cart. I’m not extreme about animal welfare but for that 1 km I never felt so guilty to a horse before. Before the bus came I sat on a warung and had a tea. Talked a little to the old couple who run it. Then the wife said “I think I saw you before.” I told her that I went 2 years ago, and she did really remember me. She remembered that I was alone too and she remembered that I was wearing purple skirt. Amazing. I was just sitting and chat with them like 15-20 minutes and 2 years later she still remember ... read more

The porter imperiously demanded to see our tickets when Soop’s cousin interceded and led Karen and I to a pony cart and some personal space away from the chaos that is Bangsal. After deep-sixing plans to stay in Gili Meno we spent the next day enjoying all that Gili Air had to offer. A spectacular sunrise greeted us in the morning as we set off for a day of spectacular snorkeling on the reef. Our resident sea turtle made an appearance and brought along a Giant Grouper. Our visits to the water were interspersed with quiet interludes in our cabana outside Sunrise Cottages. Our waiter ‘Soop’ kept us well supplied with Mango shakes and munchies. Soop is a great guy who speaks passable English. We discussed everything under the Sun with him; his family, his job, ... read more

We got up early the next morning and headed over to Ronald. The taxi driver from the night before was outside our hotel demanding the fare that we had enquired about. A heated discussion later and threats to call the police on all sides, we gave him 15,000 (a quid) for his petrol over from Kuta and he was on his way (after another argument with Ronald!!). Not the best start to a morning! Kasper needed to change his flights in Denpasar (capitla of Bali) on the way and the new taxi driver didn't really know the way to the address we wanted but several stops later we finally made it. About an hour later we were arriving in Padang bai, about to start what would be the most stressful part of my trip so far! ... read more
