When all you care about is here , this is a good place to be - Emile De Becque South Pacific We arrived in Sanur , a city by the beach in time for dinner. Once again we picked a seaside restaurant with seating in the sand. The next day we strolled the sidewalk by the sand shopping before we visited the Le Mayeur Museum. Le Mayeur was a Belgium painter who fell in love with a Balinese woman and is credited with painting beauty of the island. His muse was his wife. She later donated his home, filled with paintings to the city as a museum. During his time in Sanur they would accept Politian’s and tourists for dinner and a viewing of the paintings. The museum we saw was very similar to what visitors ... read more

Sanur is a touristy beach town in south Bali. The main drag, Danau Tamblingan, is filled with restaurants, travel agencies and spas. We spent our time on the beach relaxing and in the spa indulging. I thought about diving Nusa Penida, an island near the coast, but the strong currents in the area deterred me. I did get to snorkel off a glass bottom boat with my folks. We stayed at Kayu Sugih guesthouse which felt like a spa. It’s quiet, clean and green. I highly recommend it (kayusugih2002@ymail.com). The overall feel of Sanur was relaxing. Although there are a lot of tourists, everyone is there for the same reason, to worship the sun. I saw a quote hanging on a piece of fabric in a shop on the main drag. It really struck me and ... read more

So since mark last blogged what’s been going on?? The Ozi Inn has been running at full capacity so as usual Mark has been exhausted most days. The one thing for us to look forward to being our Asian Adventure meant that we had a lot to do even before we packed. As Mark had handed in his notice to Sunny, who was not angry but a little upset by Marks departure a replacement had to be found. After some consideration and deliberating Sunny asked a 31 year old Italian guy who had been at the hostel for some months if he would like the job. Mark and I wondered if this was such a great idea considering that Gianluca’s English was a little on the poor side but it’s Sunnys’ business so we let him ... read more

Howdy, well here we are flying some 35,000ft somewhere between Singapore and Bali, both excited at the prospect of visiting the tropical paradise that is Bali (and seeing Barrie's mum and Jeff!) and disappointed that Quantus charge AUS$12 for a meal - who charges for airplane meals? We hope they go bankrupt! Anyway, it is dark outside with slight turbulance and all is quiet in this little metal tube - time to write our blog. We left you on the Mekong River sailing to the Thai Border, a wonderful and memorable trip. Once in the north of Thailand, we based ourselves in the city of Chiang Mai for a few days, which everyone seems to rate so highly ' the jewel of N.Thailand' - Lonely Planet , we just didn't see it! Ok the main city ... read more

Glad to be leaving Kuta we hunted down a taxi to Sanur- fed up of the local transport cartels we had decided on taking a luxury ride. Finding a taxi is not a difficult task in Bali. Even when you are walking up a one way street, drivers going in the opposite direction will constantly honk at you or shout out their windows. It is not just taxis either. People also offer you rides on the back of their motorbikes, or offer to rent you a motorbike. We got in a metered taxi and took the 10 minute ride to Sanur which cost around 60,000 rupiah, but would have cost more if Luke hadn't have caught the driver taking needless u-turns to wait in traffic. Arriving in Sanur we were hot and exhausted after our night ... read more

Friday 7th January 2011 After rushing around all morning to pack our spreading mess back into our small rucksacks, we caught a bus to the train station, but the tickets to the Airport were really expensive so we decided to spend a couple more dollars on a cab for a much smoother journey. At check in we were interrogated about our onward travel from Bali. We had fortunately booked a flight from Bali to Singapore just a few days before and had the details on out Netbook, without this flight they wouldn’t have let us board, despite a ticket out of Beijing 3 months later and an obvious round the world itinerary... a bit of a problem when airlines “cabin share”, but don’t “information share”). On arrival at Dempensar we organised to stay at Alit Beach ... read more

It is not my intention to belittle 2010, but for me it was kind of the B-year ... There was a lot of *Babies (of friends) * BALI! – summer 2010 *Ballet - didn’t I go to the Swan Lake at the Luxor? *Banks - weren’t they a lot in the news? *Bed: I spent some days sick in bed * BILBAO - Autumn 2010 *Burka ban (proposals) * BOLOGNA - New Year’s 2010/2011! *Boysenberry – the exception that confirms the rule ... What about Bali, Bilbao, and Bologna? Find below a random bundle of highlights: * @Bali - The Blanco museum, buildings for sacred doings (temples), beauty spas (massages), bars, burning (cremation), beaches, and bonanza. * @Bilbao - Bay of Biscay, Brilliant architecture, Bravo Guggenheim!, Basque (and bask) food, white bridge (zubizuri), and shopping ... read more

SO I'm informed upon gazing across our posts, that Alexis was lucky enough to have some MORE free time to post. I liked it. We're now back on main Island Sanur after a pretty uneventful, sad day (it is remembrance day after all) As we left Lembogan Island (we probably already misspelled it numerous times in previous posts). So we've been complaining about all the shysters and hasslers BUT Balinese people are VERY friendly and helpful even if you don't buy anything, and most of them aren't that pushy. Alexis is going INSANE with them regardless but, if you know me, which hopefully most of you do. I'm a pretty easy going person and have been VERY relaxed about it. Anyhow, I digress... This morning we took an early speed boat ride back to Bali and ... read more
