Hi, all, I am writing this from the most amazing cyber cafe. It is gorgeous, air conditioned and very high tech. I haven't seen anything like it in India -- and it's right near my hotel here in Chennai, so I am very happy. I am now a proud member of Reliance Web World and I can surf to my heart's content in any Web World branch in India. I think this place will be a quiet, cool "safe haven," away from the hustle, bustle, noise and dirt of Chennai. The washrooms are clean and they have a great little cafe that delivers snacks and masala chai right to your computer station. Thanks for all your emails and comments on my blog. I really appreciate it. I am so glad I decided to do this travel ... read more

Saturday 21st February 2006. Consulate General of India visa surgery - Mel Milap Centre, Glasgow. After a lot of humming and hawing we finally booked our flights for India at the beginning of January. We managed to get a half decent deal having left it so late, by using Mick's BA clubcard on the off-chance and getting a cheaper deal than we'd seen 3 months earlier. So the next stage was getting a visa. Website looked straight forward - surgery in Glasgow every second Saturday ... drop in between 9.30 and 12.00 to leave in your passport and pay fees, then come back to collect between 4.30 and 5.30. Excellent. We can drop in our passports, hit Glasgow for some holiday shopping and then collect in the evening. Erm, no. We managed to find our way ... read more

Well, here are some of the pictures from my travels in India so far, eventually I'll add more of them and write up specific entries, but I just wanted to get a few online to begin with. Many of my friends and family have been asking for pictures, and I sent out a few that a friend I was travelling with had sent me, since they were already on the computer, but as it takes a while to upload them here, (and I dislike spending time on the computer) the entries may be few and far between - we'll see. As a basic introduction, I came to India in the beginning of November and went to Rajpur, just outside Dehra Dun, Uttaranchal, where the first few pictures of the mountains are from. While I was there, ... read more

Its quite a relief to get to Udaipur and it hasn't dissapointed. There is a lot less hassle here than in the other places we have visited in the "tourist triangle" and the pace of life seems a bit more chilled. The town is built around two main lakes, with two smaller lake in between. Our hotel is by one of the two small lakes and so is fairly central. It isn't amazing but its not bad. We walked round the city palace today and went out to some gardens on an island in the middle of one of the lakes. We sat there for an hour or so and just enjoyed the sun and the peace and quiet. We get rid of our driver tomorrow and even though we got scammed along the way I ... read more

Hi All! They shipped us off to a small Rotary Club in a small town about two hours outside of Pondy today. The roads were miserable and we seemed to have many near misses...I'm tired of coming within inches of having head-on collisions...sometimes I'm numb and sometimes I scream....mostly I just don't watch the road anymore...except when Mike or Ryan whisper "holy !" I keep telling them to stop that cuz I just don't want to know...if it is our time, it is our time. However, we also have a great and gifted driver (who has now been with us every day for almost five weeks)...we've been traveling around the country in a van. He has become a friend and we bring him in to eat with us and ask for beds for him to sleep ... read more

Woke up refreshed, had breakfast-I find a boiled egg balances the curry of the night before and set off to see the Amber Palace. We arrived at the magnificent site to find that the only way up was by elephant or a boring landrover so we elected for the elephant. I carefully selected what I thought was a docile beast (not that I know anything about elephants) and we clambered aboard, but not before our guide had regailed us with stories of how someone was killed a few weeks ago by a rampaging elephant. WE clung on to the ponderous beast and looked down about 2.5 m as we swayed from side to side and made our way up a very steep and slippery slope. The view was superb, albeit a bit scarry, with the palace looming ... read more

After the elephant ride (read earlier blog first), we headed to a recycled paper factory. It was so impressive. They take the scraps from trimming cotton t-shirts, underwear, etc. and turn them into beautiful paper products. We toured the plant and saw the whole process (some by machine, but mostly manual, as most things are in India due to the huge number of workers and expense of machinery). The final products are fabulous...as beautiful as our most expensive wrapping papers, note cards, book marks, etc (afterall, they import to us), except they were so inexpensive...I always want to buy more of things like this, but my suitcases are already bulging at the seams...I think that I'm going to have to buy a new suitcase in order to get everything home. (At every rotary meeting and most ... read more

Hello Everyone. We are so pleased with all the messages and comments. We feel the love...thank you. We are feeling very comfortable now after two weeks in Goa. Our health is excellent...so far no delhi-belly...and we are getting very brown. Our hotel is very comfortable and the staff are just great. They come from all over India for 'the season' which is December to April. The waiter in the restaurant is Bijay, about 45 years old and he is from Darjeeling. There is a 17 year-old from Pokhara in Nepal namd Vidar who helps in the restaurant, cleans rooms, washes laundry and just about anything else. There is Anthony, the tandoori cook - a handsome lad, very dark with flashing eyes - from Chennai. There are two young boys about ten or twelve who lost there ... read more

I dropped by Eden Gardens this morning, Calcutta's famous cricket ground, but was unable to get in. It looks more like a football stadium from the outside, and can apparently hold more than 90,000 fans. I than had an argument at the Post Office when trying to post a postcard, as the man at the Enquiries desk was trying to tell me that it was too big for the Rs 8 postage and should be Rs 15. I told him that I had already sent many postcards of exactly the same size for Rs 8 and they had arrived safely, but he was adamant. The GPO supposedly hides the site of the infamous Black Hole of Calcutta, though I couldn't see anything indicating that. I followed this up with some bureaucratic nonsense at the rail reservation ... read more

after leaving stace, i weaseled my way onto a "fully booked" sleeper train. i got to enjoy the 8 hour journey with 5 other indian men. it was one of my more memorable train ride experiences because these men were so kind to me. none of them knew one another but random locals usually seem to get along right off the bat. to illustrate how enjoyable my ride was... imagine the notorious "chi chi chi chi" man that strolls by. one guy in our sleeper bought a round for everyone. and then when the "coffee coffee coffee" man made his rounds, another guy took the initiative to buy everyone in our sleeper another round. if they didn't buy chi or coffee for the 6 of us, they would get samosas for everyone. my contribution to the ... read more
