From Ooty on the "toy train" (narrow gauge stream train) and headed down to the plains to Mettupalayam, Coimbatore and finally a 7 hr day liner on the Indian Train network to Madurai. In Madurai we tripped around the palace of 1000 pillars (actually 986) and this incredible bunch of temples in Madurai -- http://www.exotiqueindia.com/tourist-destinations-in-india/madurai-tourism.html. There were thousands of pilgrims in town chanting, praying and providing gifts to their gods. From there we headed to Rameshwaram http://www.tamilnadu-tourism.com/tamilnadu-cities/rameshwaram-tourism.html . It has a huge temple with the worlds longest corridor (1 Km) where you can get your sins washed away by going thru 22 water stations including #22 in the Bay of Bengal. Then we hired a Jeep and headed out to Adams Bridge where we could see (actually not) Sri Lanka 18 km away. So, we s ... read more

Chennai, Monday, January 30 Today was a day for finalizing arrangements for the ever elusive Hyderbad slice of our journey; and seeing some of Chennai, India’s 4th largest city, 6 or so million, capital of Tamil Nadu, the state which runs down the eastern side of the peninsula, has the Bay of Bengal as its watery companion and the mountainous Ghats as its natural western shelter. Vegetarian meals prevail here, in deference to the region’s own variant of Hinduism. So, a Tamil-style breakfast was our morning fare, taken with fingers of the right hand; the left is taboo for this task, we keep it at our side and sit on it in the act of eating. The meal consisted of breads, one rice-based and steamed, and two others based on split peas ground to a flour and ... read more

Puri is on the coast of India and once a year hosts a massive and incredible festival - yes another one. The number of festivals in India is seemingly endless! A recurring thing with my travels now seems to be bad first impressions. The amount of hassle I had trying to get someone to bring me to where the hotels are was incredible. This kind of thing happens in lots of places but I hadn't been exposed to it for a while so it came as a shock. Initially I had a struggle to get them to give me a decent price. When one of them finally agreed a good price he tried to take me to a different hotel (I wouldn't tell him which hotel I was going to because they take a large comission ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Udaipur January 30th 2006

Hello all, we have now reached Udaipur which is the last stop on our chauffer driven tour, and we have waved off our driver back to Delhi. HOwever, before we arrived here we made another stop in a place called Ranakpur which is home to the most beautiful Jain temple. (Jainism is a form of Hinduism that split off rejecting the rigid caste system of india) The temple was incredibe - the most beautiful thing I have seen in India to date. It was full of carved pillars- over one thousand, no two alike (well, so I am told - I have to admit I didnt bother to check them all!) THe light and space were incredible but confusingly although Jainism is meant to have no priests, there were several guys in saffron robes claiming to ... read more

Well here we are in Udaipur, at the end of our tour of Rajasthan. After today, we are heading down to Mumbai on a train, which will be our first experience of Indian railways.... Apparently they're an unmissable part of the authentic Indian experience, although I'd probably be more excited about the prospect if we didn't have to do 8 hours on one train, get off at 4am, then onto another train for the rest of the day at 7am. I'm sure it will be character-building anyway.... Udaipur has been quite nice, although everyone is dying to tell you how the James Bond film, Octapussy, was filmed here. Naturally, everyone you speak to was pivotal to the film and had some kind of starring role. My favourite example of this is the owner of a bag ... read more

Hi Everyone: Heaven...I'm in heaven! (Add music in the background here.) We are in Pondicherry now...and thank god for Pondicherry! Ever since we got to India people have been saying, "Wait til you get to Pondy!" Pondy is a former French colony...and it is quite European for India. The streets are clean, some are even quaint cobblestone...and we can get Western food here...yay! Last night I had spaghetti with a fabulous meat sauce and Mags, Mike and Ryan had steaks. Everyone was so delighted we could hardly contain ourselves. Oh, and I had wonderful French red wine...yum. And, get this...we had Pizza Hut for lunch! (Pizza Hut is another place I never eat at in the US, but it was so yummy...I can't even describe it accurately in words.) They don't have pepperoni, due to "import ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Pushkar January 30th 2006

We're now in Pushkar, home of the famous camel fair that happens every November. The town is small and quiet compared to the other Indian cities we've been to, and this is a blessing! From Agra we drove to Jaipur, stopping off at Fatehpur Sikri along the way....Fatehpur Sikri is an ancient town that was at one time the capital of Mughal India, but has since been abandoned and the whole complex has been preserved in immaculate condition. Where once there must have been thousands of courtiers, now the pigeons rule the roost, making for an interesting experience in this ghost town. After a rather quick visit there we continued on our way to Jaipur, driving along the scariest road yet! Normally the "highway" is one lane in either direction, but since they decided to improve ... read more

January 19 to January 29 Udaipur; peace, quiet and Bond. A wonderful place to relax and kick a Bombay cough. With wedding season in full swing, the town is also filled with wind carrying Hindi pop and Christmas lights topping dozens of roofs spotlighting celebrating families. You get the full range here, P-Diddy and the Clintons in town to celebrate a New York Hotellier's big fat Indian wedding at the Lake Palace or a couple of lights, horns, dancers and a horse - simple but still colorful in ways only India can provide. Weddings are hard to get away from and be invited to as celetial circumstances make for few dates permitting marriage and Udaipur provides a romantic feel I wouldn't describe elsewhere in India. So I head to Mt Abu next, Rajastan's only hill station ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Pushkar January 29th 2006

We arrived in Pushkar late in the evening. We were glad to have an experienced driver. Daytime driving is hairy enough, much worse at night, especially on the curvy road from Ajmer to Pushkar. Our driver found a beautiful hotel in the fashion of a fine mansion (Haveli) on the edge of town, with floors made of marble. Cost: less than $C15 per night for two of us. We planned to stay 2 nights. Pushkar is a holy city of about 15,000, with anywhere from 200 to 1000 temples (depending on who you talk to). IN the morning Jamie and I walked down to the lake, supplied by groundwater (there has been hardly any rain in recent years), and considered holy - a little like the Ganges. Accordingly the townside of the lake contains ghats or ... read more

Asia » India » Goa » Calangute January 29th 2006

We had intended to stay at Colva,a long and quiet beach, but because of Indians Public Holiday we couldn't find a room to sleep. We tried our chance at Calangati which is 2 hrs. by bus. We used two public buses and a rickshaw. We could hardly find a room after about two hrs. walk by our backpacks. The hotel room we rented is good enough and very near the sea and we paid 500 inR per night. Calangati is over crawded. During our journey we have observed that everybody takes his shoes off while entering houses, hotel room and shops. But that doesn't mean the areas are clean. The sellers disturb you most of the time to sell something but still their smiling faces worth. We have night train ticket to Mumbai on 31st Jan. The next ... read more
