Are you british? Me pregunta uno de los " ... read more

Due to our bargaining and pure tightness over the last three months we are left with a few spare rupee's in our pocket to blow lavishly in our final few weeks so Chandigarh was left in the dust of our taxi ride to Dehra Dun. It wasn't really meant to be a one night stopover but the town didn't really hold much appeal so we checked into a posh place, didn't really do a lot just planned our escape to Mussoorie which was one hour by a local grueller. Our arrival to Mussoorie was met with a monsoon battering. Mussoorie is a hill station and as such there are quite a few hills around the area so when the bus parked at the stop there was a slight problem. The deluge had created a road river ... read more

LEAVING McLEOD WARNING: Do NOT take the train ride from McLeod to Rishikesh. It's hell! We were told 11.5 hours; it took 24 hours in stinking crowded bus and train. The train station is too far from McLeod, particularly since the bus driver stops too often. The bus ticket was much cheaper, but we were told: "the train is so much more comfortable"! So, we bought an "AC/sleeper ticket"..., or so we thought! The train station is in Pathankot and how to get there was a matter of "math": 90 Rupees for bus versus 1,500 Rupees for a taxi. The bus seems the logic choice, right? WRONG!! We know that because we decided to leave raining McLeod on a freaking public bus, the dirtiest we had gotten here in India, again packed way beyond capacity and ... read more

1. The Lady on the Bus My sis Lib and I were on our way south, from the current exiled-Tibetan centre of life, McLeod Gang, to one of the most "forward thinking" cities in India, Chandigarh (picture India plopped down into suburban America). We found our bus and got on. Put another way, we landed in a cesspool of filth and flies. There were small beetles and flies everywhere. Each seat had a minimum of 5-10 flies. They seemed to congregate around spilled food, though there must have been spilled food everywhere. Luckily we were the first on the bus and somehow, after loads of intensive "field research," we found our way to two fly-free seats (a miracle in and of itself). Luckily, we found two window seats to ease the nausea of the winding bus. ... read more

I'm going to start with a story from my first week...in New York City. Brooklyn to be more precise. I was on a city bus, going from my home to the mall (every so often I will venture into a mall for whatever reason...usually anthropological...this time musical). Alison and I were just sitting and talking as usual. There was an older guy, maybe 65, sitting across from us who seemed like an average Joe. An older, black woman came onto the bus walking up the stairs slowly as she was a bit heavy and also had one of those rolling bags with her that was cluncking up the stairs. When she got to the top of the stairs, she paid the fare and rolled her bag a few inches, whereupon the bag happened to lightly touch ... read more

Novel Travelling Follow the journey of books around the world and leave your own location and thoughts. For more information and to see the index of other books on this blog go to: Bob Mehew: June 23rd, 2008 Where obtained: Gift from friends Nina and Jemima in Wivenhoe, UK Where read: Trekking in Gangotri Where left: Bookshop - Delhi Thoughts: A splendid tale of retirement angst and family pressures where the minute detail of everyday life is caught superbly by the author. Seemingly ordinary situations take extra-ordinary turns, mainly because of mis-communications in this dark family saga. The skill and ingenuity in the writing is chopping and changing between each family member very quickly (most chapters are less than five pages long) as the story is told from the point of view of all the major ... read more

My stay in Rishikesh, which turned out to be considerably longer than I had originally planned, has come to an end. Tomorrow I leave for Pathnakot on train to get a bus to Amritsar to see the Golden Temple and make a trip to see the extravagant border closing ceremonies on the India-Pakistan Border. From there I am planning on going to Dharamsala and then Manali. However, it seems to be quite cold and rainy there lately, not my favorite combination. So I am beginning to consider other opportunities. Maybe I'll make a trip to Rajasthan instead. I have really enjoyed my time in Rishikesh, even though it is a little crowded with tourists and because of much rain at night and some during the day, my pants are very much spattered with mud. I enjoyed ... read more

Whilst this blog seeks to entertain its main purpose is to be informative for those thinking of heading up to Ganagotri to trek to Gamukh and further beyond. There is a few things worth knowing that are not in the guide books before that might influence your decision as to how to do it, where to stay and whether to use guides and porters. The trek itself is lovely and fairly straight forward, passing following the Ganga valley's sheer rock faces towering above, right up to the source of the Ganga - the Gamukh glacier. The sound of the raging torrent of this great river itself is always with you, and the emptiness created by new permit rules restricting numbers to just 150 people a day makes the walk very peaceful in this hectic country. My ... read more
