Don't panic - the assault was by a squirrel (it bit Denise's bum while eating breakfast outside) and the mugging was by a monkey (it stole a bag of bananas from Denise as she walked down the road)!! Denise is recovering well from her traumas. Our journey did not start well. We did not get on our first flight as we were late and it was overbooked. The next flight was the next day on a different airline, and it was much longer as it involved a 4 hour stop-over in the United Arab Emirates. At least we were put up in the Sheraton at Heathrow, with free dinner and breakfast and 50,000 free airmiles each as compensation. So we had one less day in Delhi. We stayed there for 2 days in a pretty basic ... read more

We saw more than Taj Mahal in Agra In 2004, about one and a half years before we joined TravelBlog, we travelled in India for a few weeks. On that trip we learnt that it can get very hot in India in July. And that refers mainly to the weather. Of course, the food in India was also hot. But that's true regardless of what month of the year it is so no need to point that out. When we left Sweden we had a general idea of where we wanted to go and what we wanted to see. After a few days we realised that we'd have to alter those plans slightly. The weather was too hot for us to be able to enjoy our travels. To cool off we applied the same strategy as ... read more

Pa sva zakljucila z Rajahstanom in prispela v Agro. Tukaj si ogledava Taj Mahal, potem pa v Varanasi in Goo. V glavnem za Rajahstan nimam besed. NORO!!!!!!!!! Puscavski svet, trznice, ogromne trdnjave. Hvala bogu ni bilo predolgo, ker boli rit, ampak vodici so nama naredili vecerjo in spali smo pod milim nebom. Hrane pa koliko hoces. Zdaj pa se beseda ali dve o najinem vodicu Rameshu. Tip je totalni car! Poleg tega, da pozna vse, rihta ... read more

After Calcutta I took a train to Agra and met up with Kristen again - who I had met twice before in Himachal Pradesh. Michelle also met up with me there, by arrangement and we saw the sights of Agra, like the Taj Mahal together. Also took a day trip to Sawai Maduphur where Akbar build a very large palace to hold his harem. ... read more

I was a girl with few words at the beginning of the trip, so really said very little (my journal entries got massive by the end!!) This is what I said about the taj mahal "up at 04:40 and met the rickshaw driver who took us to the taj mahal for 0600- cost Rs 750 each- amazing though- spent 2 hours there and returned to the hotel for breakfast... a toasted cheese sandwich" There we go, not alot said at the time! I can remember it being amazing though, especially watching the sunrise. There were so few people there, I would definetley recommend it as soon as it opens up. Spent the rest of the morning treating our mozzie net and sleeping!! Went to the park restaurant for lunch- nice food. We then went to tourist ... read more

Up at 04:00 hours! Got our taxi at 05:00 hours to the railway station. Our train was an eye opener to agra (it was the express) We were given water, tea bags a vacuum flask of hot water, biscuits, newspaer and brekkie (spicy bahji, chips and peas!) all included in our price (now know where british rail went wrong!!) We decided to stay at the tourist guest house- comfortable , aircon( when it works!!) room for Rs 500 Decided to go and sight see, so we went to 1- Agra fort- impressive; actually hired a guide (oh, how things changed a year later!) 2- Itimad-ud-abulah; a maousoleum. We had dinner at the Maya restaunt (stuffed tomatos, which were very nice) - recommended by our rickshaw wallah. I then e-mailed all and sundry ( this became a ... read more
