2ndDay in Agra Day 23. Saturday 23rd December About 10am we decide to walk to Agra Fort, about 2km apparently. We try to find a path through the parkland between us & the fort, but it is harder than we thought. We had to double back once and head for the West Gate to the Taj (½ Km), then after ½ Km we come to the bus park for tourists visiting the Taj, mostly school outings it seems. Eventually we find a narrow path fenced off from the rest of the park. This is about ½ Km long, then we follow a road with inaccessable parks on each side for about a Km, then another busier road from one roundabout to another and after crossing some very busy roads we were actually following the walls of ... read more

Train & Agra Day 22. Friday 22nd December Got up at 5.45 and met the sleepy Reedies at reception at 6. We had paid all our bills last night so just dropped keys off and left with all our luggage. The manager had told us that it wasn’t worth booking a taxi as the station was nearby, so we took his advice and flagged down an auto-rick which happened to have extra boot space. We crammed our bags in there and had plenty of room for ourselves. At the train station we got a porter to carry main bags, mine over a shoulder, 2 on his head and another pulled behind, he went to the end of platform 1 and crossed the track to platform 2. Although our train wasn’t in yet (it was only 6.15 ... read more

Today is an early start for the Taj I wake at 5am and put the a/c on in the room to cool it down a bit. The machine is very noisy and as I open the curtains to look onto our "garden" view I see that i have woken up the hotel donkey and he doesn't look to pleased. We are outside waiting for the guide at 6.30am and he arrives takes us on a moto/rickshaw to the entrance of the Taj which is really a short walk, downhill. I guess that 50 rupees is going straight to him too! We are here early, as we have been advised to do so to to miss the queue, it seems everyone has the same advice so the queues are quite long. I suppose no one advised us ... read more

Sometimes words or even photos cannot convey the sense of being there. And being at the Taj Mahal is one of those times. The sheer scale of this monument is amazing, let along its beauty and the story behind why it was built. Then you go to the Agra Red Fort and are overawed again. I never thought, 23 years ago, that I would come back here. Some things have changed, only electric powered vehicles (or horse) are allowed in the vicinity of the Taj Mahal, you get silly little bags to wear over your shoes rather than taking them off and they are most of the way through a cleaning programme. But the Taj Mahal and the buildings around it still pull the crowds - big crowds. It is nearly Diwala and everyone is heading ... read more

The drive to the Taj Mahal was a lot easier at 6 am. The mausoleum is every bit as impressive as in its pictures (look it up on the web) and there were beautiful reflections in the watercourses that divide the gardens in front. There is a magnificent gateway in front and also two grand red sandstone buildings that mirror each other, and face the sides of the tomb. The western building is a mosque which is still in use and the other is thought to have been constructed for architectural balance although it may have been used as a guest house. When it was built the river came right up to the back of the building but is is now much shrunken. Although the Yamuna River is sacred, it is not very well looked after. ... read more

Our arrival in Agra was a little apprehensive, because there was a possibility of rain predicted for our visit to the Taj Mahal. Although we were travelling at the end of the monsoon season, we had encountered no rain, and the heat was daunting at times. Our hotel was on the main road, not far from the Taj Mahal, and provided a little oasis from the dusty and crowded Road. On our way there, I had been wondering about the amount of dust that might actually settle on top of the foods being sold at the endless stalls along the streets. The roads are dirt in many places, and a small cloud of dust is not unusual due to the heavy traffic. Agra is not as large as Delhi, or even Jaipur, but it is still ... read more

We were lucky enough to be staying within walking distance of the Taj, which meant we had no difficulty in walking to the ticket office at 5.15 so that we were in the queue for the sunrise visit at 5.30 and were through the gates when they opened at 5.40. The first real peep at the Taj Mahal in the dawn was simply breath taking. Although there were many people in the crowds, there was a sense of calm as if everyone was spellbound by the beauty of the monument. Like all the other visitors, we took many photographs trying to catch the perfect composition of ourselves against the majesty of the Taj. A man in the crowd stepped forward to give Molly some tips of how to photograph the monument so that its reflection is ... read more

In Agra, we stayed at a wonderful brightly coloured and laid back homestay called the Coral Tree. It was a family run homestay, with all meals taken at the family dining table. Its beautiful garden was adorned with arty statues, and the rooms were littered with jewel coloured heavily embroidered cushions. The homestay had almost a surfer vibe; it was very comfortable, and was a short walking distance from the Taj Mahal. After we had settled in, we were taken around the sights by Mokesh, our enthusiastic guide, who was very keen on Indian history and amateur photography - most of the pictures on this post were taken by him. We stopped off at a well-known restaurant - 'A Pinch of Spice' - for a delicious meal. We were all given tiny flannels on ceramic leaves, ... read more

The train to Agra was an early one and we had been upgraded to first class! We were totally spoilt with a surprisingly yummy breakfast included. When we got to Agra our hotel was right next to a Pizza Hut and a costa coffee. Now your probably thinking what is the significance of this!? Well when you have been travelling as long as we have and having eaten as much Asian/ Indian/ Chinese food as we have over the past few months, this was a revolutionary. Not to mention the fact we hadn't had a decent cup of coffee in what felt like years. Once unpacked and settled in, we headed out to do some sight seeing. The weather was over cast so we tried to get as much done as possible. We headed to Itimad-ud-dualah ... read more

Who's idea was it to take myself and my fellow client on a 22 kilometer "Holy Walk" at night, through a remote Indian village...Barefoot. Oh right...it was my idea. Sure the Taj Mahal is what everyone comes to India to see...(which we did) but what if you wanted something more than the normal touristy spots and stories? What if you had a chance to experience a once in a lifetime opportunity to create a memory and a story worth telling...one that can't be explained with a simple photo. My first week in India over a year ago, my local Indian friends took me on this very pilgrimage and it opened my eyes to a whole new world I never would have dreamed real if not for my very own eyes confirming the impossible sights around me. ... read more
