The SIM saga continued today, with the shop asking the hotel owner to give me a personal recommendation. After consulting with his lawyer, he refused to do so, claiming that if I subsequently committed a terrorist offence (the rationale behind needing the recommendation), he would be considered an accomplice. I could see where he was coming from, though I don't know why this wasn't a problem when I bought the SIM in Delhi, so I trudged back to the shop and told them the news. Of course, this wasn't an unsurmountable problem, and they decided to proceed with the application anyway. I won't go into all the gory details, but what with not being able to photocopy the relevant pages of my passport because of a powercut, as well as umpteen unsuccessful attempts by the shop ... read more

... oh, what a week. My last 12 hours in Jaipur were interesting, to say the least. I got thoroughly yelled at (perhaps 'chastised' is a better word) by a stranger on a street corner, which opened my eyes to how I've been seeing this portion of the trip. V and I were racing around the city in our usual "avoidance" march of blank stares and brisk pace when a man whose "hello"s we'd been ignoring suddenly said "so you don't speak to Indians?" It was insulting, and yet embarassingly on point. A rather heated conversation followed in which we were lectured for refusing to talk to the locals who spoke to us, and likened to the tourists who come to India and manage to avoid everything and everyone authentically Indian. We escaped the conversation unscathed, ... read more

The cold has now progressed to a hacking cough, so at least it's developing as per a typical McCabe cold. A visit to the Karni Mata temple at Deshnok may not have been the prescribed course of action from my GP at home, but I decided to go with it. The Rough Guide had neglected to mention that the bus to the temple originates from the main bus station, which happens to be walkable from my hotel. So instead I took a bone-shuddering auto to a roundabout on the south of the town, where I also found out that the RG was incorrect about which exit to stand at in order to catch the bus. Unsurprisingly, I was the only non-Indian there, but I was soon joined by a dead pigeon that appeared on the ground ... read more

Fortunately my nose had stopped running, but my head was still heavy and my throat sore. A conversation with the owner enabled me to understand why there had been no hot water yesterday morning, and why I was unable to flush the loo last night. It seems as though there are scheduled power cuts between 9 and 10:30AM, and 1:30 and 3PM, every day, plus the water is turned off between about 10PM and 7AM. Hence I need to get up between 7 and 9AM in order to have a hot shower. I noticed that the family dog had been chained up, and the owner explained that this was because he was a little "enthusiastic" around new guests. Not wanting the poor beast to lose its freedom purely on my account, I said I'd be happy ... read more

I am now in possession of a stinking cold, and spent 90% of the day in bed. I made 2 trips out - one to find tissues, which was unsuccessful, and one to attempt to upload photos to the blog, which was also unsuccessful. The owner of the hotel generously offered to loan me a handkerchief, but I declined, thinking that perhaps he hadn't realised what he was letting himself in for. I don't think I have anything more to add today.... read more

Diego had showed up for talks I was giving in LA some years ago, based on the Picture of Man here. It is the key to doorway to what is iknown by a very very few as The Way of Gratitude. It is difficult to access this information. If you are reading this particular blog, you have. It is not promoted. It is only available. You have to know how to know about it first, before you know about it. (say that three times without smiling :) When Diego called and invited him to Guatemala,"James" got it in his head that it was his duty to finish up the material what he had started with Diego. It requires a great deal of consciousness to be considerate of others. Lets say if only one person could ... read more

I did not have the best night's sleep that was possible, due to a suspected cold that has so far created a permanently running nose, not to mention a (wedding?) party nearby that was rocking until the wee small hours. I was alarmed at the toll in bog roll that this was extracting but I have to have faith that, somewhere in this dry and dusty land, there is some aloe-impregnated 4-ply with my name on it. Though there are direct buses to Bikaner from Nawalgarh, Rajesh had advised me to go via Sikkar instead, a town about 40 minutes away on the bus. I was scammed by being charged 3 times the correct price, but as that still only came to Rs 42 there was no threat of bankruptcy. The journey gave me a completely ... read more

Today was devoted to haveli hunting, using a map that Rajesh had drawn up for me. The town isn't large, but there are some confusing little alleyways and I was at the northern extremity of the map before I found my first haveli. It was interesting that Rajesh's recommended havelis did not tally with what was in the Rough Guide. Given the quality of the ones I saw, I would suspect the Rough Guide didn't see the best ones. The paintings in/on the havelis are from a mixture of sources - some based on Indian legends, some based on current affairs at the time (e.g. pictures of Britishers smoking pipes), some based on religious themes. As I was considering heading back to base for lunch, I saw a Western woman in Indian dress in the distance, ... read more

The conductor kindly made sure I got off the train at Nawalgarh Station at 6:30AM, in the morning desert chill. I got an auto to the hotel, which turned out to actually be a guest house - there are no staff except the owner and his wife, and guests are expected to fit in to the daily life of the family (there are 3 children too). Rajesh and his wife had woken especially early just to greet me, which was the first sign that there was a level of personal service available here. I had some chai in the outside, covered family area and later chatted with a Canadian couple who run a business importing Indian goods to Vancouver. It seemed as though trade was light, as the 3 of us were the only guests, whereas ... read more

Since i last updated i have travelled miles across the Indian countryside!!! From Delhi we caught the train (an experience, i tell you!) to Agra, where we spent the day sightseeing - went to the Taj Mahal, was absolutely breathtaking!!! We then continued our journey, going to many forts, palaces, a national bird park, a local village (where we actually stayed the night in a restored fort and got dressed up in traditional Indian costumes - women wore saris, men wore turbans = such good fun!) We have travelled on every means of transportation possible: jeeps, rickshaws, local buses, trains, mini buses - each one more interesting than the last! The excitement just keeps building! Everyone in this tour group is really good fun - we all look out for each other and are laughing ... read more
