The sun stretches across the desert but I can't find much beauty is what I see. This part of the desert is dotted with lonely emaciated trees, random patches of dry grass, rocks, pebbles and trash. The grand majestic sand dunes of the Thar Desert are far to the North and West of here. This stretch of uneven desert reminds me of a wet defeated cat who's just escaped from the bath with messy fur. Some primal survival instinct kicks in and I search the horizon for water and rain clouds--something, anything to break the harsh dry sun. No sign of moisture. I have a newfound compassion for the people who live here, completely dependent upon depleting water reserves. The dripping faucet in my old apartment that used to irritate the hell out of me seems ... read more

Pushkar is a bewitching little town centered around a holy lake in the middle of amber Rajasthani hills that attracts scores of Hindu pilgrims and foreign backpackers. I arrive expecting to stay only a few days but a host of surprises await me in the shadows and corners of this funny place. The train ride up feels different from any Indian Railways journey thus far. As usual, I hole up in my upper berth in 2nd class non-AC sleeper class--out of sight and out of reach. Tickets for foreigners with tourist visas come from the tourist quota, a select number of seats on every train reserved for non-Indians. It's easier for us to get reservations on short notice. Indians have to wait and usually need to book their trips days, if not weeks, in advance. A ... read more

Ok, yet another destination... it never ends! I'm just tired right now, you'll now why later.. So we left Delhi maybe 3 days ago (the day after my last e-mail, whever that was). Oh yeah did I mention I have no knowledge of days/dates or time anymore? We went to Jaipur which is a pretty big city too. Our bus ride was quite interesting.. We were supposed to be picked up at the guesthouse at 8pm by a taxi, which never happened. We ended up having to walk there with our backpacks. It wasn't really far but when you were expecting to be picked up and don't, you're pretty ticked off. Bus arrives at the "bus stop" (on the side of a deserted road with no lights and cow dung and god knows what on the ... read more

We are currently in Pushkar and just back from Camel riding in the Desert. This was quite an experience. Nadja on a 6ft Camel and me on an enormous 9 ft monster. We travelled slowly out into the desert. We set up camp, lit the fire, cooked, then slept peacefully under the stars just after consuming the local beer called Bullet (very strong beer). In the town of Pushkar, alcohol, meat and even eggs are illegal but in the desert you seem to be able to do what you like. Strange thing the desert, extremely hot during the day but at times can be pretty nippy at night. Pushkar is a Holy city and we seem to be in the middle of some religious festival, one of many throughout the year. The people enjoy to have ... read more

Here I am in India sitting in front of a computer writing my first travelblog. Though I swore off online travel-diaries, this website makes mass emails with photos incredibly more easy. And though I am against writing mass-emails, they're absolutely unavoidable. So hello family and friends! Here is my photo diary that I'm going to do my best to update. Currently, I'm in Northern India and it's more chaotic than I could have ever imagined. India is loud, exciting, dirty, colorful, intriguing, confusing, overwhelming . . . entirely different in everyway from the U.S. . . but I love it. Jordana and I flew into New Delhi on March 4th to meet up with Rachel. After a couple of days of Delhi, we took a train to Varanasi to see the Ganges river, then Agra to ... read more

Spent the last couple of days chilling out in Pushkar...it's very calm compared to the cities...no autos which is fantastic. Didn't get up to much apart from sit by the pool as it was so warm I needed to cool down occasionally. Wandered round the streets during the afternoons and evening and sampled various restaurants menus. Managed to plough through numerous books in those chilled out days. Got the old Pushkar passport so my whole family should now receive masses of good luck! here's hoping! Although the donation amount (even though quite generous) seemed to cause a stir. On my last night a procession went through town and a ageing western hippy made me laugh by dancing in a very over exagerated manner through the street to the band...that's exactly what I expected to see in ... read more

Namaste! Pushkar is now our home for the moment, we are glad to have left the city behind. Although we did enjoy our time in Jaipur, especially the City Palaceand the Jaipur Observatory (Jantar Mantar). This was built by Jai Singh in 1728, it's a collection of sculptures or instuments used for calculatingeclipses and star positions. One of these is 27m high set at 27 degrees it's used for calculating local and merridan pas time and attributes of heavenly bodies..and we though sundials were clever!! Anyway as we said we are now in a place called Pushkar, on the way we passed over snake mountain and Pushkar sits in a bowl surrounded by mountains absolutley breathtaking. Pushkar is a holy town it's really important pilgramage cwente for devout Hindis and they should visit here once in ... read more

Udaipur is strictly second division as a fly zone when compared with Pushkar, and the breakfast calories from my toast (no eggs here either) were burned off with the constant flicking that I found myself doing. There's also a litter of puppies in this area that likes to beg from any available humans, and one of them took a liking to my bag and kept plonking himself down on it. If fleas are in my immediate future, then so be it. After speaking with the hotel travel agent (who was also the Internet guy I'd berated yesterday evening for having such a treaclelike connection), I booked a sleeper berth on tomorrow's night bus to Agra. Having seen sleeper berths on previous buses in Rajasthan, and noted that they resembled stuffy glass coffins, I was keen to ... read more

I caught a bus to Ajmer at lunchtime. I had actually hoped to never take another bus journey in India, but the train connections to Ajmer are hopeless so I didn't have much of a choice. I'd been told that the bus was A/C, but that proved to not be the case. Strangely for buses here, it was never more than about three-quarters full. The reservation system had allocated me a seat next to an old chap who was on a husband-hunting expedition for his 30 year old (i.e. on the shelf, by Indian standards) daughter. He had unearthed a good prospect via a marital agency - a doctor working in Ajmer, who he was on his way to grill. Unfortunately this potential husband was originally from Hyderabad, so my neighbour was then going to journey ... read more

After a horrible 10 hour bus jounrney in a “sleeper” we arrived at the relaxed town of Pushka . Pushka is a lovely small peaceful town set around a holy lake, surrounded by mountains. We both really like it here and are going to stay a few days. Although Dave had been conned out of 100 rupees (£1.30) already! The hotel we are staying in only costs 75p, it’s not the Hilton but its fine, apart from the pillow which is like a bag of cement, and the owner called Omi has the hots for Dave and is showing him far too much favouritism. It’s really cheap here we had two cups of Tchia Tea which cost around 4p each. Mum, Tom, Delarmi, Keith (cup of tea!!) and Neil you would love it, everything I ... read more
