The Pushkar camel fair has unwittingly become the ‘face of India’ to the Western world. How do I know that? Any stock photo site when searched for ‘India’ will throw up colorful images of Rajasthan - camels featured quite prominently among them. Turbaned camel herders, comical camels silhouetted against the sunset, the proverbial Rajasthani dancer wearing a brass nathni …I definitely owed my camera a trip to Pushkar. Moreover, it was just days away from the famed camel fair. It was a pity we couldn’t make it between the 12-15th (the actual days of the fair); the call of our mundane corporate lives proved much too strong ;-) We left the General’s bungalow in Jaipur after a ‘propah’ English breakfast, stocked up on film rolls, and took a bus to Ajmer. The journey took three ... read more

Next stop is Pushkar. It's quite a small town with a pop. of 15k (for comparisons, the prior stop at Jaipur was 2.3 million - which is quite big for any country). Pushkar surrounds a lake (a holy lake) and there are certain rules - no alcohol (tough for Roy), no meat or eggs, no public displays of affection (Jill was very upset by this one). Our hotel - Seventh Heaven - is amazing. Room isn't spectacular (could use some central heating) but the building is an old haveli which in general is a building with a open interior (like a courtyard). We woke up each morning and walked to the white marble rooftop to get our breakfast and read in the morning sun. Very relaxing. Food is also good but eggs would have been nice. ... read more

Our next stop was Pushkar, a small, highly religous town where they believe in the healing powers of the lake waters. We arrived at about midday to find, again, that our prebooked rooms had been given away to someother people! As the hotel was beautiful and had the most amazing terrace overlooking the lake we were determined to stay there no matter what. The only room available for our 1 night stay was a delux room that we all 4 to share! After waiting to speak to the manager for over an hour, Lou quite literally told the manager how much we were going to pay and no messing and we were in and lapping up the luxury! The moment we stepped out of the hotel we were immediately handed a flower by guys standing on ... read more

... oh, what a week. My last 12 hours in Jaipur were interesting, to say the least. I got thoroughly yelled at (perhaps 'chastised' is a better word) by a stranger on a street corner, which opened my eyes to how I've been seeing this portion of the trip. V and I were racing around the city in our usual "avoidance" march of blank stares and brisk pace when a man whose "hello"s we'd been ignoring suddenly said "so you don't speak to Indians?" It was insulting, and yet embarassingly on point. A rather heated conversation followed in which we were lectured for refusing to talk to the locals who spoke to us, and likened to the tourists who come to India and manage to avoid everything and everyone authentically Indian. We escaped the conversation unscathed, ... read more

Hi all We left early in order to arrive in Pushkar in the early afternoon for the camel fair. After the insanity of some of the other cities, Pushkar was tame, relaxing, quiet.. or maybe we just felt that way cause we were not being harassed the same way as we were in the bigger cities. Our hotel had a pool, which was a huge plus, but Pushkar is a dry town, which was not so good. Luckily, Beebal had warned us and we had ample supplies of beer, rum and vodka. The hotel staff must think the westerners are insane. I am sure after we buzzed through they did.. Haha We went down to the "Fair Grounds". I have never seen so many camels in my life. We just wandered through the fields and the ... read more

After leaving Kashmir we began the journey south, back once again through Dharamsala and Delhi (where we met up with Paul) and continued on our way to the state of Rajasthan. Our first stop was the city of Agra, which may be best known for being the home of the Taj Majal, which is said to be “the greatest monument to love ever created”. The story goes that it was built by the fifth Mughal emperor in 1631, in memory of his second wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died after giving birth to their 14th child. Not surprisingly. It was just as beautiful as rumored to be, although our photos don’t quite do it justice. Although we were told it is most brilliant in the early morning sun and thus managed to somehow arrive around sunrise (okay, ... read more

We grabbed a morning bus from Jaipur to the small, very religious lake town of Pushkar. Unfortunately, the bus was not one which I could ride on the roof so I made do with reading the local newspaper and chatting with two Isreali girls. Upon arriving in Pushkar, we were unable to find a suitable guest house. So Natalie and I set out on a whirlwind tour of Pushkar's muddy streets in search of a good guest house (we left Ollie and Nadia to look after our backpacks). After an hour and a half, we stumbled upon Hill View Guest House (which was recommended to me by other travelers in Varanasi). As we entered the guest house, I was greeted by my Brazilian and Spanish friends from Jaipur whom I seen off to Pushkar the day ... read more
