Apani Dhani, Nawalghar 7/10/2008 We decided to treat ourselves to a taxi ride to Nawalgarh from Jaipur. (These backpacks do seem a lot heavier than when we came and I have only bought a pair of sunglasses so far!). The journey was really pleasant once we had cleared Jaipur and a major crossroads town called Chomu. It was really nice to see the countryside and people working in the fields etc. It became more and more desertified the closer we got to Nawalgarh but still being farmed quite often with modern tractors and machinery. Apani Dhani where we stayed is an eco-lodge run by a local family with a delightful manager called Krishan. It has solar power, organic veg food, recycle as much as possible and eco friendly buildings. Our room was a mud hut ... read more

Agra 3/10/2008 Took a motor-rickshaw (tuk-tuk) to New Delhi Station and took the 11.30 am train to Agra. Journey fine in A2 which means an air-conditioned carriage and 2 people to a seat with a bed above. Met some nice Indian ladies who were off to see relatives in Agra and were quite surprised when one of them hopped on the bed above and slept most of the way. So David and I got out the pillows and I managed to put my feet up and doze most of the way. Got a pre-paid taxi in a brand new a/c Renault with Mr Ali-baba and his driver who offerred to take us on a day-trip around Agra for 600 rupees, next day. As we were only staying one night seemed like a good idea. He ... read more

Day 4 Agra to Jaipur 4/10/2008 /h2 Mr Ali-Baba and different driver arrived in splendid a/c at 7.00am as promised and took us the long way round to the South gate to the Taj Mahal and said he would be waiting outside at 9.00am. Well of course the Taj is everything you hope it would be and more. The gates and entrance are such that you can't see anything until you enter the central door way and there it is!! The most beautiful marble and decorations of inlaid semi-precious stones, beautiful gardens and all totally symmetrical. See the Taj and die, say no more. Mr Ali-baba waiting at the gate took us on to the RED FORT. This too was magnificent and absolutely huge though it was so hot and humid by now that the ... read more

Today was devoted to haveli hunting, using a map that Rajesh had drawn up for me. The town isn't large, but there are some confusing little alleyways and I was at the northern extremity of the map before I found my first haveli. It was interesting that Rajesh's recommended havelis did not tally with what was in the Rough Guide. Given the quality of the ones I saw, I would suspect the Rough Guide didn't see the best ones. The paintings in/on the havelis are from a mixture of sources - some based on Indian legends, some based on current affairs at the time (e.g. pictures of Britishers smoking pipes), some based on religious themes. As I was considering heading back to base for lunch, I saw a Western woman in Indian dress in the distance, ... read more

The conductor kindly made sure I got off the train at Nawalgarh Station at 6:30AM, in the morning desert chill. I got an auto to the hotel, which turned out to actually be a guest house - there are no staff except the owner and his wife, and guests are expected to fit in to the daily life of the family (there are 3 children too). Rajesh and his wife had woken especially early just to greet me, which was the first sign that there was a level of personal service available here. I had some chai in the outside, covered family area and later chatted with a Canadian couple who run a business importing Indian goods to Vancouver. It seemed as though trade was light, as the 3 of us were the only guests, whereas ... read more
