Jodhpur is the 'blue city', so named for the propensity of many home owners to paint their houses in a pale blue colour (fashion? or to discourage mosquitos?). Notably, the city is dominated by the very impressive Meherengarh Fort, perched on a prominent hill, overlooking the plains around. We see that in Rajasthan, now and always the most sparsely inhabitated part of the sub-continent, cities were located around strategic landforms that could be protected against neighbouring warlords. Before travelling here, I didn't realize the importance of Maharajas in the history of India. Many retained political power into the 20th century, and their descendants appear to continue to act as figureheads today. Reention of the rajas throughout India as instruments of local government was one of the reasons that the British were able to gain control of ... read more

Saturday 21st February 2006. Consulate General of India visa surgery - Mel Milap Centre, Glasgow. After a lot of humming and hawing we finally booked our flights for India at the beginning of January. We managed to get a half decent deal having left it so late, by using Mick's BA clubcard on the off-chance and getting a cheaper deal than we'd seen 3 months earlier. So the next stage was getting a visa. Website looked straight forward - surgery in Glasgow every second Saturday ... drop in between 9.30 and 12.00 to leave in your passport and pay fees, then come back to collect between 4.30 and 5.30. Excellent. We can drop in our passports, hit Glasgow for some holiday shopping and then collect in the evening. Erm, no. We managed to find our way ... read more

Woke up refreshed, had breakfast-I find a boiled egg balances the curry of the night before and set off to see the Amber Palace. We arrived at the magnificent site to find that the only way up was by elephant or a boring landrover so we elected for the elephant. I carefully selected what I thought was a docile beast (not that I know anything about elephants) and we clambered aboard, but not before our guide had regailed us with stories of how someone was killed a few weeks ago by a rampaging elephant. WE clung on to the ponderous beast and looked down about 2.5 m as we swayed from side to side and made our way up a very steep and slippery slope. The view was superb, albeit a bit scarry, with the palace looming ... read more

after leaving stace, i weaseled my way onto a "fully booked" sleeper train. i got to enjoy the 8 hour journey with 5 other indian men. it was one of my more memorable train ride experiences because these men were so kind to me. none of them knew one another but random locals usually seem to get along right off the bat. to illustrate how enjoyable my ride was... imagine the notorious "chi chi chi chi" man that strolls by. one guy in our sleeper bought a round for everyone. and then when the "coffee coffee coffee" man made his rounds, another guy took the initiative to buy everyone in our sleeper another round. if they didn't buy chi or coffee for the 6 of us, they would get samosas for everyone. my contribution to the ... read more

Woke up early and was really lookig forward to our visit to this famous 'wonder of the world' Taxi took us to within a mile then we had to transfer onto a pony and trap to take us to the Taj. Paid 1500Rp to get in and our guide explained that it had taken 22 years and 30 million to build it about 350 years ago. Apparently some love sick Maharaja built it for his dead wife as a token of his love (might have been better to give it to the poor people) When we finaly saw it I have to say it was a magnificent white marble structure which captured the light in a very special way making it seem to glow. The architecture was fantastic with brilliant carvings and marbles inlaid with semi-precious ... read more

For some reason it's been difficult to write about what I've done here and I still havn't come up with anything interesting so I'll let the photos give people a rough idea of what this place is like when I finally find a place where I can upload them. What do you get if you cross a sheep with a goat? I don't know but if someone didn't kill the bloody goat someone was going to find out! Kamakyha temple (which i went to today) is just outside the city and they keep a whole bunch of animals tied up together outside which they routinely sacrafice (apparently). I didn't see any sacrafices myself but I did see lot of people buying pigeons and taking them into the temple. I don't think they kill all the animals ... read more

We then vuisited a very tranquil and peacful park-the place where Ghandi and subsequently Indira Ghandi and her son Ravi were cremated. There was a single black marble stone with a perpetual flame in recognition of his simple lifestyle- it was quite moving. We visited the REd Fort and several Kashmire Crafts shops before returning to our hotel. Next day we visited the home of Indira Ghandi. Here we witnessed a museum of her life and struggles-she appeared to be similar to Maggie Thatcher in many ways. There were many exhibits including the sari in which she was shot and the pyjamas in which her son Ravi was blown up. In her garden was a glass plaque showing were she was assasinated. We then visited the Railway museum where we were able to climb on and off ... read more

Hello all! We have now reached the blue city of Jodhpur having been to Jaipur and Pushkar. Jaipur (nicknamed the pink city) is the renowned shopping district of Rajasthan but suprisingly I managed to resist, mainly due to the fact I get so confused during the haggling process I dont end up with what I thought I was getting - doh! After the elephant ride of the first day walking about in the streets was a good change, although crossing the road is an adventure in itself. After waiting about 10 minutes to cross one road in particuar we spotted some men carrying huge blocks of material on their heads creating a kind of canopy as they walked together. Because the material was so large and so heavy they had to walk slowly and couldn't turn ... read more

What a contrast, New Delhi with its clean wide tree lined avenues and pristine government buildings and Old Delhi, which being complimentary is a slum! where seemingly millions of people cling on to a pathetically poor existance living with their pigs and cattle in the most appalling open sewered streets. Cripples, beggars and women with countless children all begging for whatever they can get. I saw men and women openly urinating in the narrow open sewers which they call streets, and pigs and cattle feeding for what they can get from the mountains of uncollected rubbish and men walking round with rustly old rifles presumably for either crime or protection. Every type of shop and business seems to be present from barbers shops consisting of a chair and a mirror hung from a tree to butchers ... read more

Hi everyone, You'll be pleased to know that since my last entry, I have checked some flowers, rice and dye into a lake on your behalf and prayed for your wellbeing and protection!! Yes folks...we've been to Pushkar. This is a holy pilgrimage place in Rajasthan, where people come to bath in the lake and pray for good fortune for their friends and families. Mainly, this means that there are loads of fakers trying to force flowers into your hands and get you to chuck them in the lake. They claim 'no charge, no charge, just peace for your family and for your heart', then you do some bizarre ritual where they get you to chant stuff, throw the flowers in the water, put a blob of rice/red dye on your forehead, tie a red string ... read more
