The year 2006 will start with a trip to India. It’s a fascinating country and I’ve been fortunate to visit it on several occasions, most recently with my wife, Pat, to celebrate our Silver Wedding Anniversary in 1997. We joined a group of Brits on a package tour of Rajasthan; I loved everything about it, but the trip was marred by Pat’s dislike of the taste and smell of curry! Plus, while we took all the usual precautions - peeling fruit, declining salads, brushing teeth with bottled water - we both ended up with humungous doses of Delhi Belly, Jaipur Jippy and Bombay Bum, and sometimes all three at once! We survived, but Pat’s never forgotten, nor forgiven. So, I’ll be on my own in India this time. I say ‘on my own’, but only on ... read more

My throat had showed little improvement from yesterday so today was designated an admin day. The India Railway website was running at a crawl, so I was unable to figure out the best train from Delhi to Amritsar, but I did get the name and the number of the train I want from Jaipur to Delhi. It's another early start - 5AM - but still preferable to an overnighter. At the station, I had to queue at the Foreigners, Handicapped, Freedom Fighters, Senior Citizens, Journalists, and MPs/MLAs counter. There were representatives of at least 3 of those categories in the queue. Lunch was taken at the hotel. Due to there only being one Indian dish on the menu (the veg thali I had last night), for variety's sake I picked out a cheese penne from the ... read more

Regrettably I now have a fully fledged sore throat, meaning that's 2 colds in the space of less than a month. I've managed a much lower frequency than that in supposedly cold countries, but I've seen so many other travellers here with the sniffles, that I can only assume the contrast between day (20s) and night (closer to zero) is affecting everyone else too. However I was pleased to discover that my shower is in perfect working order - it has the correct number of jets, all of which blast out water at an appropriate velocity, and there is unlimited hot water. So a good 30 minutes was spent enjoying this luxury. I figured I should do the city sightseeing today at a leisurely pace, so I took my first ever cycle rickshaw, to the Hawa ... read more

Up at 4:20AM. As no-one was going to be around to get me hot water, the owner had given me an immersion heater to heat my bucket with. I had to bridge the bucket with a hanger, then the heater slotted over the hanger and dangled in the water - it couldn't be hung on the side of the bucket because of the risk of melting the plastic. The whole contraption looked like a recipe for death by electrocution, but I avoided this fate and also managed to wash my hair. According to the hotel owner, there was a rickshaw drivers' strike planned for today, in protest against government plans to force them to wear uniforms. Though it wasn't due to start until 8AM, I didn't want to run the risk of having to leg it ... read more

Well here we are, just days before I leave India...and, due to a few circumstantial factors, my ISP was stretched a little longer than intended, so I am not quite done with my work as of yet. Once academia looses me from its relentless grip, perhaps I'll have time for some really wise final blogger remarks before my departure home...until then, here are some wonderful pictures of the kids I taught who, incidentally, were quite sad to see me go and wrote me lots of wonderful cards and letters, and threw me little parties. I miss them already!... read more

Diego had showed up for talks I was giving in LA some years ago, based on the Picture of Man here. It is the key to doorway to what is iknown by a very very few as The Way of Gratitude. It is difficult to access this information. If you are reading this particular blog, you have. It is not promoted. It is only available. You have to know how to know about it first, before you know about it. (say that three times without smiling :) When Diego called and invited him to Guatemala,"James" got it in his head that it was his duty to finish up the material what he had started with Diego. It requires a great deal of consciousness to be considerate of others. Lets say if only one person could ... read more

Since i last updated i have travelled miles across the Indian countryside!!! From Delhi we caught the train (an experience, i tell you!) to Agra, where we spent the day sightseeing - went to the Taj Mahal, was absolutely breathtaking!!! We then continued our journey, going to many forts, palaces, a national bird park, a local village (where we actually stayed the night in a restored fort and got dressed up in traditional Indian costumes - women wore saris, men wore turbans = such good fun!) We have travelled on every means of transportation possible: jeeps, rickshaws, local buses, trains, mini buses - each one more interesting than the last! The excitement just keeps building! Everyone in this tour group is really good fun - we all look out for each other and are laughing ... read more

The train from Mumbai to Jaipur was 18 hours and I opted to take second class sleeper. It’s not a bad way to travel, being a little less than $10 (US) and giving me a reserved berth of my own. It’s not air-conditioned and is, as most other places in India, very chaotic. I got on the train to find about 10 people sitting on the lower berths of the compartment I was to be in, meaning there was no room for this foreigner. No problem to me as I’d gotten the upper berth, but even being on the top berth didn’t make me immune to the screaming children and shouting people, and it definitely didn’t protect me from the loud, loud (loud really doesn’t even begin to cover it) snorer who was on the ... read more

Almost as soon as I stepped out of my hotel in Jaipur, I was pounced upon by a lurking auto rickshaw driver. I forgot his name only seconds after he told it to me, so I'll call him Musa for the purposes of this story. (No doubt he similarly forgot my name, "Brandon" being as unpronounceable to his tongue as his true name was to mine.) "Rickshaw today, sir?" Musa asked. "All day only 100 rupees." That's about two dollars, and a low price for a day's transport. I was intrigued, but of course, there had to be a catch. Musa elaborated. "I take you Wind Palace, City Palace, Cenotaph, Amber Fort, Water Palace. We stay as long as you like." It was everywhere I had planned to go, plus a few bonus stops. "Then after, ... read more

Hello.. We stopped at an old royal Palace on the way to Jaipur, it was amazing..The fort was just as intricate and huge as the others. There was this huge old pool that they obviously do not use anymore, but this kid kept jumping off the wall into the rank dirty water for rupees.. not sure who was paying him.. He was so young and just silly... There was also a Huge Mosque that really was a market selling any crap a tourist might be interested in... We also went to Amber Fort which is by far the best fort so far (theres a lot more to come) haha.. But it was great. The railings and screens are all carverd marble about 1.5 inches thick, just beautiful.. really amazing. There was a wall of fortifications all ... read more
