The guidebook devotes two pages to Alwar and its sights. It commends, in particular, the City Palace and its museum, so it was with high hopes that we set off this morning, but the trip did not go quite as planned. Problem one: our driver had never been to Alwar before so had no idea which way to go. We showed him the map in the guidebook, from which we deduced we should go straight across the first roundabout. He said the map did not help, and turned right at the roundabout. We took a leisurely drive round what passes for a ring road before eventually entering Alwar on the opposite side of town some half hour later. Nobody he asked seemed entirely sure where the palace was “local people not helping”, but eventually we got ... read more

We leave Jaipur with a slight sense of relief at quitting the city and are soon back in the dusty fields of rural India. David is ecstatic having learned at 2am that Everton had eliminated Chelsea in the 5thround of the FA Cup. For the first half of our journey we enjoy the luxury of a 4 lane highway where the flyovers through the villages have actually been completed. This boosts our average speed no end and is a welcome change from our previous trips. But, as Pramod reminds us, “In India no road rules local people very bad driving”. You cannot relax for a minute, three twenty ton trucks may be just around the corner bearing down on you on your side of the road because they cannot be bothered to go the long way ... read more

a short drive from delhi and we climbed up a hillock to reach the gates of neemrana, the hotel group takes its name from this property. the climb up the ramp to the lobby is steep and in fact its rocky and a climb up and a climb down everywhere inside the fortress. we were staying at the krishna mahal which included a room, balcony and terrace. one could look out at horizons afar from the terrace or balcony and in fact we were situated right at the face of the fortress. lunch neemrana style was a buffet spread at an ornately done dining room overlooking the swimming pool. we took a walk in the evening and came across the pankha or hand pulled fans of erstwhile courtiers, a sun dial and aerial views from every ... read more

Karita's sister Pia is visiting this week from Finland. Karita, Pia, James, Kim and I headed to Neemrana Palace this weekend. This place is one of my favorite places in India. Check out the pictures!! "Built since 1464 AD, Neemrana Fort-Palace is today among India's oldest heritage resorts, started in 1986. It is located on a high hillock and it commands magnificent views of the surrounding beauty and got its name from a valiant local chieftain named Nimola Meo, situated at 122 km on the Delhi-Jaipur highway - only 100 km from Delhi's international airport. The Chauhan capital was shifted from Mandhan (near Alwar) to Neemrana when the town was established by Raja Dup Raj in 1467. Nowadays, the Neemrana fort is a leading heritage resort and is an ideal venue for weddings and conferences." ... read more

How would the royals spend an introspective evening? I have no experience of it; but lying lazily at the terrace of the Lake Palace Hotel at Alwar overlooking the Silisehr lake and the adjoining rolling hillocks, with a gorgeous ambience created by the cool evening breeze after a hot summer afternoon, and the fading rays of the disappearing sun, I felt like a royal. The evening was stimulating all my senses to the core. We had driven down to Alwar in Rajasthan in the morning. It is just a couple of hours drive from Delhi along the Delhi-Jaipur highway, and then taking the Bhiwadi bypass route. Compared to usual roadways in India, this stretch is excellent. Three of us, Balaji, Nilanjan and I had driven to Alwar on a Saturday morning. We had heard about a ... read more
