HE SAID... We were leaving Kochi and heading north to Delhi. We woke at 4am and prepared ourselves for the day ahead. We left our tranquil homestay in Fort Kochi at 5am and made our way to Kochi Domestic Airport in a taxi for our early morning flight to Delhi. The taxi driver was from another universe. He looked way past retirement, and he drove accordingly. He was on the wrong side of the road for the first few minutes until we pointed it out to him. He then slowly and methodically negotiated the roadwork mayhem from Kochi to the airport. Every now and again he would summon the courage to pass a crawling truck laden with logs, only to pull in and slow down in front of it, so it was forced to overtake us. ... read more

I was hoping to see the same enthusiasm in my fellow travellers who had come from all over the Country to embark on this mystical journey with me. Another aspect of traveling that I look forward to is interacting with people who are in the same boat as you, carrying stories with them and somehow wired similarly to you. The bonds you develop with people you meet on your travels is profoundly strong. It's so overwhelming to see how you just assimilate yourself with people so effortlessly without any facade and layers of pretence. You learn and discover so much together and even individually, you realise you are so much more than just what you think you are which otherwise you cannot get to know half as much in your ordinary mundane life. I was introduced ... read more

I always knew deep down, for the longest time, that I wanted to do Ladakh some day. And this thought seemed a distant dream to me, rather unthinkable back then when I started to work a few years ago as a Corporate Lawyer in one of the Legal Firms in Delhi. I have always lead a very cliched' life. Always had this burning desire to travel, to explore the unknown, to rediscover myself and to tread a path filled with stories and memories. However, I never tried to look inside of me, my passion, my dreams. They were lying dormant somewhere deep down inside of me waiting to be unleashed and to be unfolded. It just so happened that sometime last year in the month of July, I finally took the call of pulling out of ... read more

So I made it through the last day in Ahmedabad. It was great to relax for a day and just do not a lot....but I did do quite a bit looking back on it. After a morning of writing and organizing I decided I better see some of the city and area. I went down to the street and walked across the Nehru Bridge to get to one of the Auto stands. At one point a group of young guys in their teens came up to me and wanted each to have their picture taken with me. It seems that just being white here in parts of the city are like being a celebrity. They toom their pictures and then off to do whatever they were doing to start with. Then I was approached by a ... read more

We have now left India and the last two train journeys we had probably epitomised this amasing country and it's future. The first was an 18 hour slog from Jaisalmer to Old Delhi station. Poor Daniel was doing it with his broken collar bone which got very painful at one point. We had booked into 2nd Class Sleeper. It is where you get to see all India, its dirt cheap, literally, and arrives at the same time as the AC classes. We had four berths in the same area. Our seats had been allocated to us by text message. A brother and sister had the other two berths in our group of six. Across the narrow gangway was a drunk soldier! The seats are configured so that the back of the bench seat becomes the middle ... read more

The underbelly of travelling cheaply is that compromises have to be made in oder to lower the cost. When we booked Wongdhen House we chose it for its value, being fairly cheap yet fairly good condition. To save money we booked it for two nights only - the 7th and 8th. Because check in time is noon, and our flight arrived into Delhi at 4.30am this morning (the 7th) we agreed to wait until noon for a driver to pick us up. Cue eight hours of waiting. There is only so long I can spend disinterestedly reading Reddit before it becomes a chore. Ultimately it was eight hours of nothingness: it wasn't even boring. It just felt like a stretch of absent-presence. Marc Auge describes airport waiting rooms as non-places designed to be almost outside time ... read more

We loved Jaipur and were lucky to see so much of it. Our journey to Delhi was broken by a night in the village of Patan. After a 4 hour road journey we turned off down a more rural road leading through typical villages with stalls, local shops and, of course, animals wandering around; cows, pigs, goats and camels pulling carts along non-tarmaced roads. We travelled deep into the village wondering where on earth our hotel could possibly be.... Suddenly we found ourselves at Patan Mahal, our heritage hotel for the night. It had such character. We were treated like royalty by the attentive staff. What a contrast to the adjacent village! The rooms were really suites and had amazing character with heavy furniture. We dined that evening in the courtyard outside by a bonfire. The ... read more

It started with a fateful remark. We had cleared the airport, all very modern, and were on the super efficient express train heading for New Delhi Railway Station. "I feel Delhi has not really hit us yet", I said to Jane. And it hadn't. We could have been in London or Paris. By the time we had got to the station we had decided to try and book our train to Amritsar before heading to our hostel in South Delhi. All the guides books and signs say do not get taken in by touts and yet we still were. Now it is not easy to find the International Tourist Bureau at New Delhi station. We failed to do so on this visit and got persuade to take a short tuktuk ride to find a good city ... read more
