Greetings readers, well, today was our first official tour day in Delhi. We had the usual crazy taxi ride to our first location which was the Salaambaa lak trust which is a charity which helps out the street kids of Delhi. It takes them off the streets and provides accommodation, food, medical attention and education for kids who beg, steal and pick pocket and do drugs etc or are in street gangs. Some go back to their parents but many stay and grow up and get an education to go on and do well in Alice. Our guide told us his story of a violent farther who beat him her he didn't earn enough money begging. So he tried shoe shining, pot washing, taking food out of bins to eat, being in a street gang and also ... read more

Well after a 24 hour delay here I am a few days into my big adventure. Due to traffic on the M25 I missed my flight grrrrr! However I rebooked to fly out the same time the next day. I recovered my bag from the relevant area of Heathrow and decided to accept my fate. So I are a hearty breakfast at Cafe Rouge, took the National Express to the Ibis and had a restful day safe and sound. The next day I was awake mega early and headed to the airport and negotiated checking and passport control successfully. The flight to Amsterdam was delayed due to a no show and their bag had to be removed from the plane for security reasons. I thought blimey that was me yesterday lol. I began to panic and ... read more

New Delhi Our hotel was a little cozy bed and breakfast and they served the most delicious Indian breakfast I had in India so far. We woke up and ordered two meals of breakfast which included, parantha, some lentils, and a veggie kind of porridge, some juice and delicious authentic chai! When we were heading out the old man in charge of the reception asked us if we would stay another night and well we decided yes, but we had to move rooms and tour luck got a little upgraded for the same price to a better hotel )same owner but newer facility) and with a better and bigger room. So after packing up and moving our stuff we headed out to explore Delhi. Our first stop was at a tourist agent to look for a ... read more

Well, here I go again and once again it was a little rough start. I didn’t leave as scheduled but ended up leaving 23 hours later than scheduled due to engine problems. I flew from Toronto to Frankfurt with no one in my aisle so I was able to sleep lying down and thanks to my new discovery – Ativan! From Frankfurt I flew direct to Delhi. The airport is not the crazy mess it used to be but a brand new enormous airport with all the modern amenities. Even though I started my journey one day late, I was still able to visit some sites around Delhi. It is still the beautiful paradox it has always been and surprisingly enough, it seems cleaner and a little more organized than what I remembered four years ago. ... read more

Delhi or “dilli” as most residents would say is a great and a vibrant city. It’s got so much culture that you would be surprised - all bustling together with the shiny and modern buildings. Water and coke are pretty cheap and easily available. But if you really want to quench your thirst then there is nothing like beer and give rest to those sore muscles after all the walking that you have done. There are plenty of beers available and believe me when I tell you that I have tasted quite a few. In Delhi, I tried out the local Indian beer called Godfather Strong and boy; this is one of the best that I have tasted in a long time. I was told that it’s available all over India and quite popular. This was ... read more

The enormity of what I was about to undertake hit me for the first time after an emotional farewell with the parents at Heathrow. For the next 48hrs my emotions seesawed between ecstatic excitement and anxiety, bordering at times on panic and dread. The flight was fine, although I certainly wouldn't get excited about flying Air India in the future. I have noticed over the years the size of people’s hand luggage has got increasingly large and silly, are you seriously going to need all that stuff over the space of 8 hours??? Apparently not, as I have also observed that no one and I mean NO ONE takes their hand luggage out of the overhead luggage compartment until the plane lands. I dared to break this unspoken faux pax by retrieving a book from my ... read more
