Konkan - January - 2023 1: Alibaug/Nagaon, Janjira, Harihareshwar Konkan is not very common on the bucket list of most of the tourists especially those who are from outside Maharashtra. Konkan is the coastal region of Maharashtra, between Sahyadri ranges on one side and Arabian sea on the other, extending south of Mumbai up to Goa. Mythology says that Konkan is the land reclaimed from the sea by Lord Parshuram as he had donated everything that he had and had nowhere to go. Some say that Kerala is the land of Parshuram. Whatever, there are a lot of similarities between the ‘Konkan’ - ie between Mumbai and Goa, and Kerala - terrain wise. Idea of going to Konkan occurred to me after watching ‘Konkan tour’ by Harish Bali (a You-Tuber). Of course we did not do ... read more

Amey was in Mumbai with his family after a long gap & everybody was approaching Alibaug, where he was based. His alibaug home. And thingsworked out nicely.Prakash Kaka decided to have a Satyanarayan Pooja on this nice occassion. Its a reguler yearly ritual at his place but this time since Amey was returning, I think he decided to push it few months ahead in December. He was hoping that he will sit for the pooja which ultimately he didnt so Kaka & Kaki only had to sit. Myself & Nam,two of us left Mumbai on a friday.Distance of approx.125 kms was reached in around 3-3.5 hours.Navin,Anuja, Bhushan who are Amey's maternal cousins were already there. All of us shared same age group, between 25-30 except Bhushan who is the juniormost among us. I think he was in his sweet 16.When we ... read more

Wiser from yesterday's experience, I decided to take it slow and chose Ganpatipule, about 130 km from Dapoli, as my next halt. I started early and reached the jetty to catch a ferry to Dhopave. The ferry operates every half an hour from 6.30 am to 10.00 pm. A bridge is under construction nearby, which the Eicher's road atlas already shows on its map. At the Dhopave jetty, if you are heading to Guhagar, the locals will recommend you to take left (esp. if you are riding alone and they need a lift). Even the signboard indicates a left turn to Guhagar. However turn right to take the uphill dirt road to the village of Anjanvel. As you near the monstrous and now defunct Enron project, the road gets unbelievably smooth and wide (or borrowing from ... read more

On the last weekend of February, Afshan and I decided to go to Alibag. Needed a break from the noise, crowd and pollution of Mumbai. Since we were not keen to traveling too far, we were looking at options close to Mumbai itself. After a lot of surfing and contemplation we finally short-listed on Alibag. It was a last minute plan and we decided to travel to Alibag even without reservations there. We knew we'd figure out something once we reached. Also none of the options of the internet looked too promising and we dint want to pay for something we dint like. Alibag is a coastal town and a municipal council in Raigad District in the Konkan region of Maharashtra. It is situated 35 km south of Mumbai and was developed in the 17th century ... read more

A weekend is all you need to experience this simple beach near Mumbai , Alibaug !! Now commercially established, it is crowded on national holidays and festivals. Specialities : *The Kolaba fort *Fresh catch of fish/prawns/crab *Sunsets Our Itinerary was quite simple - eat- sleep- sunset-fort-eat and sleep. The Kolaba Fort is located 1 km through Alibag beach. Angre Sarkar, a Maratha warrior with Shivaji started the construction of this sea fort in 1680 AD. The fort is known to be 900 feet long, 350 feet wide and has 25-foot-high walls which have 17 bastions (Burj) on all sides. The fort has been standing with pride for over 300 years. The fort can not be accessed during high tide. The huge arc entry tigers, peacocks, elephants carved on it. Beyond just another small door. Beside the ... read more
