Now this place is one of the undiscovered gems of India. Orchha is a very small village on the banks of the Betwa River- the cleanest river in India they say- and just about has more ancient palaces, temples and cenotaphs than people. The streets are virtually garbage-free since the population of the village hasn't overwhelmed its public services, and the air is fresh. However someone has taught the local kids that foreign tourists are a good source of handouts- every time we left the hotel we were greeted by a chorus of "hello pen" "hello one rupee"- I heard this in villages in Nepal as well. To get here we took a train to from Gwalior to Jhainsi, the nearest station to Orccha. It was about an hour and a half late into Gwalior, which ... read more

We arrived at our next desination 'Orchha' after a 3 hour car journey and were dropped off right outside the massive Fort there.....which also happened to be our hotel too! (Sheesh Mahal). We were taken to our Marharaja suite (only the very best of course!) which was very grand! We spent our evening sipping the local brew and watching the sunset from our private open window seat in true marharaja style followed by a breakfast the next morning at our very own alfresco dining area! For the rest of the morning we explored the rest of the fort and the village. The village itself is rather unpleasant compared to our last stop in Khajuraho. After a tasty curry lunch we took another short car journey to Jhansi to catch the Shatabdi Express to Agra (Executive class ... read more

It started like in a movie (or nightmare). I had a train at 6:00AM and I woke up at 5:51AM with my bag half-undone and my hotel was a good 15 minutes walk from the train station. I packed my bag as fast as I could, ran downstairs to pay for my room. The guy at check-in was busy with 2 customers so I just put 150Rs on the table and said: "I owe you 150Rs, here it is" and ran away. He tried to tell me to wait but I just shouted "Just trust me". There were no rickshaws in the street at first so I ran. Eventually a cycle-rickshaw passed by and I said 20Rs to train station (that's like 4x the price, I just really wanted to get there NOW). He asked for ... read more

It's been go go go the past couple of days. But what fun! Quite pleased to have seen the back of Agra truth to told - it just seemed like EVERYONE wanted to rip you off one way or another. The hotel I stayed - Hotel Sheela on the East Gate in Taj Gang was however a little oasis of calm, with a nice garden, good food, and freindly alastian and an even friendly manager who warns you of the tourist do's and don'ts in Agra. Unfortunately I failed to heed his advice on getting a rickshaw driver to take you on a tour of the city. He told me he'll arrange a taxi for 700 rupees, but when the nice rickshaw man I took from Agra Fort station said he'd do it for 300 rupees, ... read more

First thing this morning, I accompanied the hotel manager to the barber. The guy completely avoided eye contact with me, so I think he knew this was coming. A brief argument ensued, during which the owner said that the price was completely wrong and that I would be going to the police if I didn't get a partial refund. The barber eventually coughed up Rs 100, and attempted to apologise to me, which I was loth to accept. So I ended up paying the right(ish) price for a (bad) haircut, but I didn't make any friends in the process, and the whole experience left quite a bitter taste. Since I had visited almost everything in Orchha yesterday, I only had a few outlying monuments on the agenda for today. None of them were of more interest ... read more

A great night's sleep was followed by a much-needed hot shower, and to top that I was even served marmalade with my toast for breakfast. Perhaps I need to snap out of enjoying these comforts so much. I kicked off the day with some sight-seeing, starting with the Raj Mahal complex. Though the buildings are in good condition structurally, there are few remaining traces of the paintings and hanging decorations that once adorned them. It was the same story in the Jahangir Mahal, though here there were some of the original blue tiles that had covered the facade. The town of Orchha itself is small, consisting mainly of one street, with a sidestreet that opens up into the market square. The place is clearly established on the tourist trail, as I saw many groups of foreigners ... read more

A 5:30AM rise, and there was no hot water. A $70 per night hotel in India that has no hot water! I complained bitterly about this at the reception, and demanded an explanation. I was told it would be forthcoming by e-mail. My next gripe followed hot on the heels of this one. I had been told yesterday that a (daytime) rickshaw to the station should cost Rs 15. Even taking into account the earliness of the hour, there was no way it should cost Rs 50 - which was the price quoted by the driver, after he had been summoned by hotel staff. So I'm standing in the dawn cold with a rickshaw-wallah and 2 employees of the same hotel that gave me a completely different quote yesterday, and neither of them even blinked when ... read more

Our guidebook describes the small town of Orchha in such positive terms that we absolutely had to go there. The train brought us to the city of Jhansi, an important city where many trains pass through, from there we had to hire a taxi because we did not find any shared rickshaws. We arrived in the afternoon and after some searching for a convenient hotel, we decided for one with a splendid view of the fort. We had hoped for a place similar to Hampi, where we could chill out in a peaceful surrounding and Orchha was exactly hat! Already the hotel was nice, the rooms arranged around an inner courtyard, where it was nice to sit and read, write or watch the fort. We quickly took a walk around and immediately liked what we saw. ... read more
