I caught a Rs 2.50 ferry across to Fort Cochin this morning to allow me to visit Fort Cochin itself as well as Mattancherry, the two most picturesque parts of Kochi. The harbour doesn't quite fall into that category, being dominated more by container ships than smaller vessels. A short walk from the Fort Cochin ferry terminal brought me to one of Kerala's most famous sights - the row of Chinese fishing nets. Each of these requires 4 people to operate the pulley system that raises/lowers the net, with the counterweight being rocks tied together with rope. The whole ensemble looks like some sort of mediaeval siege engine. I breakfasted at a place called Monty's, in a shaded leafy back garden containing a curious but suspicious cat and an Englishwoman explaining the rules of cricket to ... read more

Though there is a shower in my cabin, it draws its water from a reservoir on top of the boat. After an entire night, that water is by no means warm, so I had a bracing cold shower to start the day, noting that the 3rd toe on my left foot has gone purple. The morning weather was delightfully fresh, being both cool and lacking the stickiness that would come later. After breakfast, it took another couple of hours of cruising at 10 kmh to return us to yesterday's start point. We passed a boat belonging to the (luxury) Oberoi hotel, which had about 10 bedrooms, its own speedboat, and I distinctly saw a toque-wearing chef rustling up something in the galley at the stern. We also saw an enormous flotilla of ducks that was at ... read more

Hello! I am now feeling much better you'll be pleased to hear! note to self: don't forget the hat ! We are now in a place called alleppy which is the main place to take a backwater tour of kerela from although we havent managed to organise that yet... Ooty was enjoyable apart from the sunstroke, and on the trek I managed to gate crash an engagement party! I asked a man in the village we stopped for lunch in, if there was a toilet in the village I could use. He seemed very certain of this and I followed him a little way through the village to a building which had a big welcome sign over the door and lots of brightly coloured banners on the roof .Thinking it was a primary school or something ... read more

Two rows of drummers and three rows of pipers are building a tower of rhythm in front of the Bhagati temple in Nayarambalam. As the melam reaches a crescendo, men on top of the nine caparisoned elephants behind the pipers stand up, ritualistically fanning their alavattom and venchamaram. Pambadi Rajan, the King of Elephants that presides over the nine tuskers, stands majestically with four men and the deity on its top. Eight days and eight nights of festivities have left the elephants tired. Each of them has three men on top and two mahouts nearby. The animals stand motionless amid the crowd as tourists click away at the magnificent view. Wounds on their legs and hips constantly remind them of the harsh lessons given by their little trainers. As a session of the concerts gets over, ... read more

Co-ordinating pictures with Vernon's prose is proving to be a challenge. Part of the problem is that I left the cable connector for my digital camera in Canada and so far have not been able to replace it. Some cyber cafes can download my memory stick and burn a cd for me. In other instances I have been able to get this done in a camera shop. So, I have decided to pass on efforts to co-ordinate my photos with Vernon's prose, at least for the time being. What I have done is gone back to the material I have and have pulled out some photos that should give a flavour of our time here. If you click on the full image the pictures are enlarged. Well, we have just arrived at the capital city of the state of Kerela, and I thought I would try to capture what we have been doing over the past two days. If I do not do so now, I will lose it and never get it back. On Monday morn, we went by car, Hindustan Motors, Ambassador Classic, 2006,and driver, from Kochi to Aleppo to do our own personal houseboat cruise in the backwaters of Kerela. The backwaters, best I can tell, are waterways that result from coast line contention, between the ever present Arabian Sea and the myriad rivers that attempt to flow into the sea, with not a lot of success, so that the waters back up into what is a fertile plain, beyond which stand the mountains that source the rivers. On ... read more

So...we arrived in Cochin from the houseboat by train...but there's only one storey to tell.....We starred in a Bollywood TV production (yep really...read on) So, Cochin is a lovely town - well at least Fort Cochin is, which is the old trading port at the end of the Island. A marvellously preserved town, stuffed full of old colonial buildings, and mercifully, very little Indian traffic and general hubub. The old sea wall is stuffed with Chinese fishing nets and you can by the fish fresh from the sea and have it cooked then and there. We did !! 2 quid for a plate of Tiger Prawns. The town also has an Old Jewish quarter, with the Indian Pepper 'Stock Market'. We barged in to have a look - but it was all computerised - very disappointing ... read more

Our next adventure took us to the Backwaters of Kerela, where we boarded a massive houseboat. The decor was lovely and the rooms were better than some of the hotels we've stayed in! We only had 24 hours on the boat, so once we'd set off we sat down for an amazing lunch with some of the best curry so far. We then relaxed and watch the worl go by on the waters, passing beautiful paddy fields and quaint properties on the side of the banks. When we docked at around 7pm for the night, the lovely breeze died down and the temperature began to rise, not helped by the hot curry for supper! There were lots of insects that decided to join us and the odd bat that flew in and out of the boat ... read more
