Got bus from Kumily to Cochin about 7 hour journey with usual pack of passengers and people hanging on but had got to terminus early to secure seat and space for rucksack. This was a really scenic journey as we wound along hillsides and down forest clad valleys. Arrived Ernakulam and got ferry to Fort Cochin and secured accommodation in Vasco's House which Lucy had recommended. Went out for look arround and immediately met Flo and Marie who had just arrived from Delhi 48 hour journey. Walking up street when heard shout and it was Miko and Mike from Ooty. Arranged to meet later and went for fish meal at chinese nets It was good to see them both again and Mike's leg was feeling a bit better Went for last dinner with MIko and Mike ... read more

This is the story of our day, May 7, 2006. The following includes no exaggerations, as it needs none. We woke up in the morning at our comfortable homestay in Fort Cochin, The Spencer Home. Our third day in Kochi. We lingered in bed a little longer than usual. We were a bit hesitant to start this day. Today was the day we'd planned to attend Thrissur Pooram, Kerala's biggest festival. Today was the final day of the festival, and we were excited at the chance to see elephants adorned in festival attire. We hesitated because 8 people were killed a few days ago by firework explosions associated with the festival. We decided to go for it. After all, we had to cancel our trip to Sri Lanka because of air strikes the night before we ... read more

Fort Kochi is an interesting place: when walking around its streets lined by European-style mansions, it is almost hard to remember that you are in India. Everything seems to be a bit more relaxed here than in the other parts of India we visited, and more traveller friendly. It clearly embraces its rich cultural heritage, following spells of control by the Portuguese, Dutch, and British. To a certain extent, the city reminds me of Cape Town in South Africa: while Fort Kochi is in some ways clearly Indian, and while Cape Town is in some ways clearly South African, there is something about these places which makes me feel comfortable here as a European... We arrived in Fort Kochi on Saturday, after taking a train from Coimbatore to Ernakulam and a ferry from Ernakulam to Fort ... read more

When I finally got back up to Ernakaulam, 3 hours after I was originally there!!! I finally lucked out that day and the bus going to the ferry to get to Fort Cochin was the first one I bumped into! ok it was a 10 minute journey but simple pleasures n all that. Arrived and strudged with my backpack to the town...all in an effort to save money and get a bit of excercise. Was met by a bloke who did the usual look at this hotel line, after taking me to a few that were full we finally got to another homestay. Despite the viscious dog experience last time I had still enjoyed the experience and decided that the room wasn't bad for the price, bathroom actually had a bath...bit ropey but still it had ... read more

Like Goa, Kochin is a wealthy area and the people are incredibly friendly. The hotel we stayed in faced a football pitch. The highlight for me was playing cricket in the daytime and footy in the evening with the locals, a great bunch of lads, and all eager to show me there football skills. I’m sure you will be pleased to know that during this time I managed to recruit a few more Liverpool fans! We spent a day on a small wooden boat checking out the backwaters, which was a little boring after 20 minutes especially when the guide waffled on about the virtue of a load of plants. Apparently one magical plant which we could not touch helped cured baldness, heal colds, help you sleep and increase your sex drive hmm …. The ... read more

The flight from Mumbai to Cochin/Kochi in central Kerala is fine and uneventful. The arrival in Cochin is like hitting a hot wet wall of air, punctuated by mosquitos. Its humid. The Fort House hotel in Fort Cochin looks a little ramshackle as we arrive very hot and a little terrified by the driving (which rivals Mumbai's efforts) and some of the towns we've been through. Our first thoughts are for dinner (the restaurant at our hotel is known for serving the best Keralan food in the area) and a cold cold Kingfisher. With the food, we are certainly not disappointed. The fact they don't serve alcohol makes me sharply intake breath and make Toby worried for my health if not my sanity. The refreshing joys of fresh lime and soda will become important to us ... read more

Ok... so the planned elephant viewing never happened. Found the perfect train to get us back from Mysore to Mumbai in time for the test, so had a mad dash over to the mainland to have a go at booking tickets. Delayed only by a 20 minute wait to make sure that my slightly dodgy stomach wasn't the start of something else. I know I'm going to get food poisoning at some point, but I really didn't want it to hit ten minutes into a 40 minute ferry journey... Got to Ernakulam, and hired ourselves an auto rickshaw. Having got used to them on the more sedate island of Fort Kochi, to be thrown into the rush hour traffic of a proper big town was quite dramatic. Totally insane situation. Hundreds of these autos careering around ... read more

It's now midday in Fort Kochi. And it's bloody hot. And more humid than it is hot. Forget moving - you've sweated your shirt through as soon as you've thought about moving. Evenings are almost unbearable. It's as much as I can do to lift the fork to my mouth. Probably not going to get a lot of sympathy though, am I? Anyway, arrived at Fort Cochin via a fantastic budget flight from Mumbai and then an hour and a half journey by cab. More exotic indian driving - one amazing manouver on the way. A triple overtaking. Slow lorry in the left lane, being overtaken by a fairly slow car in the middle of the road, with another one using his superior 35mph top speed to overtake practically in the gutter of the other side ... read more

Yesterday, at the Kerala Tourist Info place, I'd booked a half-day backwater cruise for today that would give me a much closer look at backwater life - a small boat propelled by a man with a punting pole would be able to get down some of the narrow channels that the kettu vallam had been unable to get down in Allepey. So 8:30AM saw me clambering into a minibus for the journey out to the backwaters. 40 minutes later, we were at a plantation, where the guide showed us pineapples, wild pineapples, black pepper, tamarind, jackfruit, coconuts, etc being cultivated. There was also a demonstration of mat making using wild pineapple leaves, and one of coconut fibre manufacture from coconut husks. Then the tour proper began. The boat was a large, covered, motor-powered affair, which concerned ... read more

Flew Silk Air, a division of Singpore Airlines, to Cochin. Not quite the same luxury as our previous flight. Drop-down video screens, with no sound, regaled us with the worst version of Funniest Home Videos we've ever seen. Must be the discards. Mostly, the footage consisted of kids hurting themselves in various ways (falling off of bicycles was quite popular). After the meal was served, we decided that our time could be used more wisely by sleeping. Arrived in Cochin at 10:15 pm. Customs was a breeze and our backpacks (which we hadn't seen since Vancouver) arrived quickly on the conveyor belt. Luckily, we realized that we had left all our warm clothes in the overhead bin on the plane. An airport attendant was kind enough to retrieve them for us. The big worry was.....Will our ... read more
