Wow! What a great few days… have made good friends with Zac and spent a lot of time chatting with him and more recently a lovely yogini called Anna who isgoing to be my new next door neighbour. Went out on a mission to find anything that was not curry and contained meat last night and ended up at quite a posh tourist hotel where we splashed out on meat, some wine/beer and ice cream. Bill was 750 Rps, we had 350Rps. Woops. Off Zac went on the rickshaw home for cash whilst I had a nice drink with the missionaries and the British skank boy on the next table. (He’s trying to travel the world for nothing and doing rather a good job!) I went on a day trip up Chimundi Hill on Sunday (our ... read more

Day started badly and ended great. Could not physically get myself up for 6 am yoga (great start on day 1) so decided to do the half four class instead. So, as not in the mood for sight seeing I stayed in bed till 1 feeling sorry for myself and wondering if I would ever be fit enough to advance my yoga ever again. Later found out my very cute landlord who calls roundabouts - big circles, was so worried about me he asked at the Mandala if he should wake me. That’ll teach me for being lazy!! Got up did some asana on the roof, made the reading room into a yoga room. More asana. Its quite clear to me by now how unfit I have become since Ibiza and that smoking and drinking are ... read more

I love my little slum flat a little less today as I found a cockroach. Less said about this better. Went to the Devaraja Fruit and Veg market today via AR. Must learn my way about as I’m sure these guys are taking me on walkies to make money - they seem to be the most expensive thing in India! Amazing market - flowers/fruit/veg/oils/incense. A little boy showed me how to make incense sticks by rolling the scented powder and glue stuff together -I stocked up for 15Rps;-) The colours in this market are amazing and I will def be back for more oils/ incense and veg when I learn how to cook Indian style! Went to the Maharaja’s Palace, surprisingly uninspiring I thought, looks a bit like its falling down and needs some serious renovation, ... read more

Up early, pull a muscle in my neck from insane amount of luggage which is all getting sent back to my mum. AR to bus station, manage to get local bus (me and about 80 Indian men) to Mysore (3hrs) for 95Rps (70Rps=£1). This is def the way to travel. Apart from the obvious falling apart bus travel danger, I don’t have to endure 3 hrs of horrible air con or moaning tourists (not that I’ve actually seen any yet). I have been told by many people that I would be leered at by Indian men etc for being white….not so… I am glad to be of a darker white colour… but it may just be Mysore. I find everyone very friendly so far. MUCH less hassle from men and street sellers than in Africa!!! And ... read more

The funny part about planning a route through unfamiliar territory is that you really don't understand it at all. Jenna and I plan our travel route about a 2 weeks to a week in advance and have a reliable travel guide but sometimes we find that we makes plans to go between cities and areas where there isn't established transit. On a map we eyed out a pleasent coastal route to 2 of the major spots we wanted to visit, Ooty, and Ernakulam. When we went to book train and bus tickets we realized that there was no way to go the route we envisioned. Even though there are train tracks and highways on a map there just wasn't a way to connect the dots. We ended up having to turn inland... WAY inland to the ... read more

A leaking bus took us overnight via OOTY to the town of Mysore, famed for several things, most notably its amazing palace and profusion of skilled craftsmen in hundreds of fields. We spent several fun filled days wandering the very colourful streets. We came across "cottage Industry" style production of Beedies (small cigarettes made of leaves and cheap tobacco), incense (hand rolled by local widows from a fine charcoal paste, and then mixed with an infusion of distilled oils), and a variety of local craftsmen producing a huge assortment of goods from guns, to tables inlaid with fine pearl. Attending the local market was a feast for all our senses. The different smells from each row of stalls packed with unrecognisable fruits and vegetables intermingled with stalls selling incense, distilled oils and spices. Some stalls were ... read more

Sunday 7th March, we decided to move on from Wayanad. Stephen and Sarah were also keen to get to Hampi, so we agreed to travel together. An interesting last breakfast. Varghese assured us that if we stayed for 20 days, they would provide 20 different Indian breakfasts! So we sat down to the wonderful coffee, and he came out with a big pot of rice noodles, and a huge bowl of forest honey. He put big spoonfuls of the noodles on each of our plates, followed by dollops of honey on top. We all tucked in, and it was superb. Then he re-appeared with another large dish, and somewhat to our surprise spooned masses of egg curry on top! Not what any of us would probably chosen to do, but it was certainly an interesting experience. ... read more

I positioned myself at the south gate of the Mysore Palace. It was a Sunday - illumination day - and at 7 pm the 3-storyed Palace would be bathed in light. It would be an awesome sight. Already, a fair crowd had gathered at the car park area; tourists, passersby, taxi and bus drivers who had driven in their passengers in air-conditioned coaches. A few elders and women remained seated in the coaches while others ambled around; families with kids were surrounded by balloon sellers - “I want the heart-shaped one” someone said (it was Valentine’s Day, that Sunday) ; a group of foreigners were being hounded by urchins selling their wares at twice, thrice the normal price. A cucumber seller was doing brisk business knowing fully well that once the lights come on the crowds ... read more

Namaste!! Hope all is well in the land of hope and glory. We are writing this approx 2 weeks behind at the moment… hopefully we’ll catch up soon. So.. we left Bang Bang Bangalore for a city called Mysore. It was a three hour bus ride (FYI- this cost 1 quid each. We seem to remember it’s 1.80 into town in Sheffield!!). Checked out a few rooms on arrival, one resembled the cells from Bad Girls only with less romance. We didn’t choose this one and realize it may not be possible to enjoy a 3 quid a night room. Plumped for a room for 4 quid a night with… HOT WATER!!!! No shower mind, just our old friend Mr Bucket. Gail actually cried tears of joy when she bathed. Anyway… Mysore is a prosperous bustling ... read more
