Geo: 32.2207, 76.3188I took an overnight bus from Delhi to Dharmsala last night. It wasn't comfortable. The flights between these two places are routinely canceled because of too few passengers, and there isn't a train. The bus was really my only option. I tried a bunch of different travel agents to try to book the most expensive/luxury bus I could. I've yet to meet a travel agent in Delhi who hasn't looked me in the eye and told a HUGE lie. I don't trust a one of them. So I bought my ticket from the least seedy agent I could find, paid twice what my guide book said to, and got on an old busted up bus for 14 hours. Not fun, the windows rattled all the way, there were no lights, so once the sun ... read more

Yey, so I've been here a couple of days now - I'm not entirely sure how many though. I've lost track. I've met a very nice lady called Rough who's been traveling a lot in India, and come back here loads of times, so she showed me a bit around and we went up to the Tashita temple because she wanted to to the 5 day retreat course they are doing, but decided not to because her divination told her it was a bad time.. eh.. she's very nice - a bit weird, but very nice. We had a stray dog who followed us all the way up and fought of monkeys that tried to cross our way and afterwards we had a cup of tea at the teashop. Very nice place, and I might go ... read more

I arrived in McLeod Ganj at about 6 am yesterday after an long and bumpy night, driving from Delhi. Delhi was, as it usually is - awful! I can't cope with that place. If it's all the people, me being alone, the heat or just me recovering from being on a plane for too long I don't know, but something about it makes my brain stop functioning properly. I must say, Douglas Adams wasn't making stuff up when he said all you need is a towel. The bedsheets in Delhi didn't convince me much, so I was very happy too use my (a very nice fiber one my father gave me for my birthday) towel. Also it made a great blanket on my ride to Dharamsala. I'm thinking of naming it.. Anyway, I'm now safe and ... read more

Well, after , quite possibly, the longest car/jeep journey i have ever experienced we finally managed to reach Dharamsala. It has to be quite possibly one of the most dangerous journies i have ever been given the priviledge of doing. We were originially told it would be 12 hours from srinigar to Dharamsala. Well it turned out to be more like 16 hours by the time the drivers had had all of their breaks. What with all the cows just randomly in the middle of the road and the manic horn blowing and over taking and driving along cliffs with sheer drops and the road surfaces where you hit your head off the top of the jeep because it was so bad we made it!!! We did the journey with Imogen and Claire, which helped ease ... read more

Tuesday 10 June Pleasant drive to the Norblinka Institute where traditional Tibetan Artistry is still being taught. It has pretty gardens in the Japanese style with little waterways; water trickling out of mouths of stone lions' heads; trees & fluttering prayers flags. We watched woodcarvers cutting intircate designs out of wood for furniture in both the old fashioned way with a large hand-held fret saw & the modern way using a machine fret saw. Both workers were very skilled. We also saw young men hand carving delicate designs & one was even kind enough to give us a sample of his practise work. Metal workers were creating different parts of goddess statues which would eventually all be fitted together. Some were hammering pieces into shape; others were filing down pieces for an exact fit; some were ... read more

TUESDAY 10th June Well, I'm on the Internet at last, having waited for hours for that wife of mine to do her stuff! "I'lll be very quick as I can type faster than you!" Aye, that'll be right. By the time she had come up to relieve me, I'd done all the packing, and everything! Well, you can believe that if you want to! Alison developed a chesty cough 6 days ago. I advised her to start an antibiotic straight away but true to a wife's prerogative, she chose to ignore my advice. It was 3 days before I elicited from her that she had ignored her Physician's excellent advice. Since then, I have been subjected to the most horrendous cough overnight Then it was the sinuses, and sneezing, and blowing catarrh out of her nose ... read more

Monday 8th June. I am hopelessly mixed up with the dates, so if I am wrong, I apologise! We had a dreadful thunderstorm last night, and the pounding of the rain was made a lot worse by the tin roof on the White Haven. But this place is a dream. The surroundings could not be more beautiful, and the views of the Eastern Himalayas are superb. This morning however, a mist came down, and obliterated everything when I went out for a stroll at 7.30 am. After brekky, the sun tried to come out, and by the time we joined our lovely Guide, Jane, it was becoming sunny. We were to meet Jane at her road-end but in the event the road was closed; the Dalai Lama was coming down in a motorcade, so we stopped ... read more

Monday 9 June Pouring with rain first thing. This is earlier than usual for the monsoons - just our luck. However by the time we were ready to venture out it was dry & brightening up considerably. We went to collect Jane, our guide, from her house but found the road closed off because the Dalai Lama was due to be driven down to the airport as he was flying to Australia today. We went to stand at the road side & saw his cavalcade whizz past but as it was so fast we did not really get a chance to see his Holiness properly. Still, we nearly saw him! We drove to Kangra village & walked up through the bazaar full of small shops selling gifts for the gods & gifts for the tourists. We ... read more
