We’re heading south now towards Diu, a coastal resort. It’s too far to drive in a day so we’ll stay one night in Bhavnagar, 4 ½ hours away, with a stop at Lothal Harappan. Lothal was a major port, trading and bead making centre under the Harappan or Indus Valley civilisation from around 2400BC to 1500BC, so before the arrival of the Aryans in India. The Harappans were trading along the Silk Road long before the concept existed, buying copper from Oman and Afghanistan and selling beads and other goods as far west as Turkey and Egypt. They used standardised weights and measures, and installed mains drainage and sewage thousands of years before the Romans. The towns were built on a grid pattern with all dimensions of roads etc standardised. The town of Lothal is thought ... read more

Alarm went off.. With lots of difficulty I opened my eyes to check the time, It was 3.30 am and as usual I asked my husband to get ready. He warned me to leave without me if I do not get ready in 30 mins. We both were so much sleepy but we decided to leave the house at 4 am no matter what. Fortunately we were in the car exactly at 4 am. Palitana was that place and so as we approached I was full of expectation. The omens were good – straight into town we hit a lassi stall (the daily lassi has become a bit of a habit in Gujarat). Then the fruit walla next to it tells us about where to find a hotel. We go there. But...... it is still being built! Something wrong with the local intelligence here. After several rides up and down ... read more

Well here goes, first entry on my travelblog. Not sure who I'm writing this for just yet, ie you my merry audience, so maybe i'll write for myself and see how things pan out. The unforgettable smell of hot humid tarmac that is Bombay airport. Ingrained in my memory. Only this time the air conditioning is so efficient inside even the domestic terminal that waiting all night for the mornings connecting flight was cold. Not an experience i had expected on my round the world adventure seeking warmer climes - I had to put my woolly sox on. And no, before you ask no i dont have a picture of me at Bombay airport with my woolly sox! A week on the Vadi. For those that dont know this is the farm my grandparents started in ... read more
