I don’t know what it is about India in particular that has made our jaunt through this country so very memorable in such a short space of time. Beautiful people, it’s the common theme throughout the whole of our trip to date, whether we meet them or they meet us, I’m not really sure, it’s just working really well. John (Goan Taxi Driver) is another example of one such person. The Indian ethics of respect and hard work run so deep through this man, it blew both of us away. Oh and another ethic which is equally as important…. honesty, this is the sort of man that cops the 100 rupee fine for not wearing his “taxi” shirt, than pay a 50 rupee bribe. I don’t think I have felt any safer in such an unsafe ... read more

Finally we are dragging ourselves away from this haven. We have booked flights up to Dehli for tomorrow, as we want to get to the north before the snow does! We are heading for Himachal Pradesh, which borders with Tibet and houses the Dali Lama and the Tibetan government in exile. It will be a bit of a contrast to here, particularly in temperature. We have also booked our Christmas accomodation, in the Oberoi Grande in Kolkata. Thats all our parents Christmas money spent! Hope everyone is having a good time.... read more

I took an overnight sleeper bus from Pune to Palolem beach in Goa. I wasn't sleeping well and welcomed the unscheduled stop when the brakes on the bus started to emit a burning smell throughout the coach. They had the bus jacked up, the wheels off, fixed and back on the road within 2 hours. Pretty impressive since most of the passengers didn't even wake up. These sorts of things are what goes in India - its the norm you know. The sunsets in Goa are spectacular, the pace of life is slow and this is reflected in the chilled out atmosphere of the people enjoying the beach life. Palolem has one of the nicest beaches along the coast of Goa, it is kept clean and tidy by locals and is lined with beautiful palm trees. ... read more

Hello from India, Today we finally arrived in Goa, after an 8 1/2 hour flight, numerous rickety taxis, and a 15-hour overnight train ride. It's a relief to reach Palolem beach, possibly the most laid back place either of us have ever been to! The flight, though long, was ok, as we had our own entertainment system, with games, films and tv on demand, including Friends and Jonathon Creek! Once we arrived in Mumbai we took a taxi to the train station, which took an hour. After leaving our luggage in the cloakroom we headed out to the blistering heat of the streets of Mumbai. The streets were very busy and noisy. Outside the station there were many beggars and persistent taxi drivers offering us tours around the sights. We however, headed towards Marine Drive, where ... read more

Unforgettable days in paradise... Goa...aaah if there was only a word to describe it, Palolem beach in paticular...well if it helps they name her the lost paradise. Found now! Is it sinful to have this much fun? Socialising, sun, beach, indulgence of the taste buds...mmm I can sense the taste of sweet papaya juice on my tongue right now! NAH! I guess there’s no such thing as too much fun! I mean I deserved it, they were my last precious months in India: a working holiday! Working because India is exhausting to anyone who even goes there for a holiday! You need a holiday from your holiday. Trust me you have to go there to understand what the true essence of what exhausting is; firstly it's a third world country (sorry! "Developing" nation...politically correct I assume, ... read more

Went a bit crazy in Jaipur buying jewels! Made a huge and slightly risky purchase of a custom designed ring, yip I am now a ring designer. It is white gold with an oval sapphire in the center, on both sides two tiny diamonds and then a small square emerald; all in a clasp setting. Luckily when I picked it up the next day it was exactly as expected, now I am praying that they are actually real precious stones, tehehe. I’ll get it appraised once I get to Sydney. After making the purchased I raced put to Tiger Fort, which looks out over Jaipur, I missed sunset but was told it was a bit average any way. There was a great view of the city below; it is a lot bigger and more sprawling than ... read more

Dreadful to say but true, the wealthy Westerner guilt I’d felt in Mumbai began to fade away the moment we arrived in Goa (together with all the stress, anxiety and sweat we’d accumulated in the previous few days). As the sea breeze blew gently through the many coconut palms, we could feel immediately that life moves at a different pace in Goa, people are happier, more relaxed, appreciative that they live in this (relatively) wealthy little pocket of paradise. Our destination was Palolem, an idyllic curve of beach nestled between palm trees, where the only developments are a few restaurants and little clusters of coconut huts on stilts. The water of the Arabian sea is deliciously warm with gentle waves, the sand is soft and yellow, the beer is cold, the food is sensational and everything ... read more

So last night I decided to go for a beer at Cafe Cuba on the beach.... Felt I deserved it for doing nothing really LOL, ended up staying there 'til about 11pm. Met a guy named Xavier from MTL. It kinda gave it away that he was Canadian because of his Canada Post shirt... He's been living and working here since December I believe.. I think I went to bed around 12am. I actually slept in for the first time in a while today... 10 am!!! WOW LOL I had to head into Margoa today, a town near by. I took the local bus as it's MUCH cheaper than trying to get a taxi there. It takes about an hour to get there. Reason being because the ATM doesn't work for me here and I remembered ... read more
