I came equipped with baseball bats to Sphoorti Children’s Home this week because there is plenty of land around for hitting balls. Due to plenty of practice with cricket bats, hand-eye coordination was not an issue and I was chasing a lot of balls into the brush. We even managed to lose several on the surrounding rooftops. It really didn’t matter much if the pitches came bouncing in cricket-stlye or made it to the batter in the air, these kids managed to hit pretty much everything. I think we inadvertantly invented some sort of cricket-baseball fusion sport. Another great Sunday and I managed to make it out without having to exhibit any of my own dancing skills but did get to see some more of theirs. ... read more

Late this week we set out for Ongole (450 km southeast of Hyderabad) to talk to local entrepreneurs in the granite industry about cluster development within an area SEZ dedicated to stone fabrication and building products. Ongole, located on the coast of Andhra Pradesh, is one of the major centers for tobacco trading in the state; however, during the late 1990’s, Ongole started to focus on leveraging its abundant natural resources. The availability of the unique stone Black Galaxy granite has resulted in the proliferation of granite mining, stone cutting and polishing companies. The granite is uniformly black in appearance and flecked with bright golden reflectors (Bronzite). Black Galaxy is used worldwide but is primarily quarried from Andhra Pradesh. There are three types of Black Galaxy granite: large speckled, medium speckled and small speckled (unsuprisingly dependant ... read more

YadaGiri Gutta A holy place , which can be reached in about 2 hrs from hyderabad by road, "was" famous for lakshmi narasimha swamy temple. An avatar of lord vishnu, out of 7 avatars taken by him to protect the universe. I've intentionally used the word "was" famous, as this place is more famous for "surendrapuri", where all the majoir temples models have been reconstructed and placed under one roof. These models are not small models, infact some of them are as big as the real ones. We get to see around 380 such very famous temple models here at the surendrapuri kala dhamam at yadagiri gutta. Any one who visits yadagiri gutta, has to visit this place too. well coming to my journey, it is about 5th or 6th visit of mine to yadagiri ... read more

Today I visited the Sphoorti Foundation’s Children’s Home, which is an orphanage located just outside of Hyderabad. The premises contain one housing area for the boys, one housing area for the girls and a common area for cooking, eating meals and other shared experiences. The mission of the NGO is to provide full care for underprivileged children who are orphaned, abandoned, or destitute and includes children who have lost at least one parent, are from poverty-stricken families, have physically/mentally challenged parents, and children from families devastated by HIV/AIDS. Currently Sphoorti has 80 full time residential children and another 30 who come part time, ranging from ages 4 to 13. When I arrived and walked into the common area, the first thing I saw was about 40 of the brightest smiling faces you could ever wish to ... read more
