What I thought was a teacher taking a photo of me teaching, turned out to be the Deputy Vice Principal, using his still camera to film my entire lesson. Afterwards, in the corridor, he shook my hand profusely and then explained who he was, that he was a Chinese teacher, and that he thought my lesson was fantastic because he could understand just about every word. I have now taught five lessons this week, and always had at least one, and my record so far is five teachers observing. The teachers commonly observe each other here. They bring their own stool, sit quietly at the back like a row of sparrows on a fence and take notes in their programming / observation book. This is slightly inconvenient for my teaching style, as I do not stay ... read more

Il avait ... read more

Monday at the Nerada Hotel (5 star), Jinhua, China. William (Shanghai minder to settle me in safely) and I are invited by Dee (staff at school) because she had been speaking to Mr. L (rich business man from Melbourne who I met at dinner in Adelaide recently) and he asked her to look after me. Lunch was in a private room, on the 24th floor, for birthday of local opera singer (gorgeous looking, immaculate makeup and hair, a white lace frock worth thousands, at biggest, size 6). Mr. M was our host, friend of Mr. L, and managing boss of said hotel, who picked us up in his big black RV. Guests were Chinese Army man with 3 stars on his shoulders (5 is maximum), director of army hospital, and 3 big business men ... read more

Huge! 15,000 students, an area that takes an hour to walk from one side to the other, 4 canteens, a shopping street, its' own hospital and a library the size of a department store. Tin proudly gave me a guided tour of his old university - Zheijang Normal, and I was impressed. My favorite sites - the field of sunflowers, complete with wedding photography event; the foreign language schools Jars of Dreams and compulsory 2 weeks military training activities, (audible from my apartment). Pride of place, on entering the School of foreign languages, is a beautiful row of pattery jars. Every first year student writes their aspirations on a card, which is kept safely on display for the 4 years of their studies. On graduation, the school holds a ceremony, where the students get their dream ... read more

The end of my first week brought the annual team-building event. Chinese style. You don't want to spend Saturday sitting on a bus with your colleagues? Lose a day's holiday. This would not work back home: the unions would not allow it. But of course with the fun office tribe it could be nothing less than a fun trip... Only slightly deprived of sleep, I made it to the office for the unreasonably early start time. I realized I had no clue where we were going or what we were going to do, only that I was involuntarily immersed in Chinese mass tourism. Not much choice now. On the coach, we were encouraged to join in some games, which were half geared towards exercises against DVT (how far were we going to drive?) and half at ... read more

I was sitting in an auditorium with 300 plus new colleagues, celebrating National Teachers Day. Speeches, long and short were followed by presentations of huge bouquets, gifts of solar lamps and lucky envelopes with $150 bonuses. There was even a presentation for the guys from security. Next came entertainment presented by staff, pop and folk songs rousingly performed to a very receptive audience, and a poetry recital by an honourable retired teacher. Dinner and gifts for all the retired teachers came next, with plenty of toasts. Perhaps we could begin this tradition in Adelaide!... read more

There was not time to visit all the viewpoints and sights in Hangzhou, but I fitted in a boat trip before the train to Nanjing. The boat trips go to a small island on the lake. The traditional highlight on the island is the "three ponds mirroring the moon". This sounds very exotic. There are three small stone pagodas in the lake and everyone takes photos of them from the island. They are quite small and if that was the only thing to see the island would be disappointing. The attraction of the island is that the island is mostly a lake with paths meeting in a cross in the middle of the lake, so that wherever you are on the island you can see water. The paths are well laid out and the water lilies ... read more

Unfortunately my second day in Hangzhou was rained off. I spent the day shopping and enjoyed a cup of tea in one of the many tea houses around the lake. In town I spotted a film crew for some reason filming a tea house with the traditional tea pouring ceremony, metal tea pots with long spouts that are placed on the head and then poured into a tiny cup. The weather fortunately improved to dull with light drizzle, good enough for sight seeing around the lake. I ambled across the "broken bridge". It is one of the poetic scenic spots. The bridge is not broken. It is called the broken bridge because the snow melts here first giving a broken appearance. The bridge leads to the Bai causeway and Gushan Island. On the island I most ... read more
