There was not time to visit all the viewpoints and sights in Hangzhou, but I fitted in a boat trip before the train to Nanjing. The boat trips go to a small island on the lake. The traditional highlight on the island is the "three ponds mirroring the moon". This sounds very exotic. There are three small stone pagodas in the lake and everyone takes photos of them from the island. They are quite small and if that was the only thing to see the island would be disappointing. The attraction of the island is that the island is mostly a lake with paths meeting in a cross in the middle of the lake, so that wherever you are on the island you can see water. The paths are well laid out and the water lilies were putting on a good show. The photo shows a rock that is meant to look like a group of lion cubs. Really! I couldn't see that from any direction, but I enjoyed the island and I can see why it is attractive to the tour groups. The second photo shows two of the three stone pagodas.
