The Kunming Xinghua International Resort is spread over a great many acres. At it’s centre is a man made lake, over which is built a meandering bridge for after-dinner strolls. At the centre of the lake is a beautiful gold trimmed pagoda. Around the perimeter of the lake are water lilies and smaller ponds of fish and turtles. The centre piece of the lake is a massive mirror imaged gilded dragon. This centre piece sets the stage for a very tranquil ambience. For those wanting to meditate or just have quiet conversation, the many trails which meander throughout the gardened grounds offer just that. At intervals along the path are both marble benches, which encourage quiet contemplation, and outdoor aerobic machines designed to test one’s physical endurance. We often cross paths with other students from other ... read more

Just a quick note to catch you up to the present. In about 3 hours I get on a bus bound for Luang Prabang, Laos, which is a slight deviation from my original route plan. Originally I was going to stop in Jinghong, in the far south Xishuangbanna region of China, and in Luang Namtha, a town in northern Laos, but that was mostly because I wasn't sure about connection between Kunming (my last "real" stop in China) and Luang Prabang (my first "real" stop in Laos). Since I managed to get a direct bus, I decided to spend a few extra days in Kunming. Allegedly the bus will take 26 hours, but it is a sleeper bus with actual beds (I was worried about a direct bus being seats only, and I didn't want to ... read more

I have a huge few days its hard to know where to begin; but hopfully I'll just write and I hope that it will make sense. My farewell weekend was rather sad but also happy at the same time. I went with the other awesome AuPairs to Window of the World- a theme park with minature verions of world scenes- including the Sydney opera house! HELL YES! it was awesome. I think I'll really miss those guys in Shenzhen, they're really good people and I'll miss their company. My family also took me out for dinner on the saturday night- which was sooo yummy! It was sad saying goodbye to them on Sunday though, the little girl kept saying all weekeend, "I'll miss you..." aw :'( It felt awfully lonely on the plane from Shenzhen to ... read more

Many strange and wonderful things can occur when you send your wife in search of hot water on a sleeper train. In this instance Steph ended up talking to a member of the Samaritans Purse, whilst in the hunt for boiling water. It was as a result of this chance encounter that she bounded back into our sleeper carriage and announced that she had secured a free lift from Lao Cai to Sapa with the Samaritans Purse in the morning. It was because of this that, at 6:00am the next morning we were able to walk straight past all of the waiting taxi and minibus drivers and pile straight into the Samaritans Purse jeep along with the American family that were working for the Samaritans Purse and hence had arranged the vehicle. We then proceeded straight ... read more

We were excited about attending Dalian International Christian Fellowship (DICF) Sunday morning, but first since everyone was still waking up early we strolled through the park to check out the local people on an early morning. It is now a holiday season Labor Day so it is in 1st Monday of May so the tradition is to spend time with family and just go to the parks, take a walk, and fly a kite. The park was full of people. They had an elderly band playing with an opera singer. Men and women were praticing tai chi and stick fighting. couples were doing ball room style dancing in the square. Also people were just doing exercise routines. Most people were familys with the 40 and older crowd doing all of the workout activities. So first hand ... read more

Day 11, Today we flew northwest to Kunming. When we got to the airport I was not too excited about this stop. We had been to this airport once before and it's just kinda dirty and over crowded. I thought if the airport looks like this then what does the city look like? I wasn't too impressed flying over it either just looked big and dirty as well. We are staying in a hotel on Green lake. I'm very impressed with the city and the area we are in. I would say it's a pretty upscale area. It's kind of refreshing staying in nice place and a clean city as well. After dinner Tracy and I decided t go to the spa and get massages. It was an experience let me tell you. First they brought ... read more

Little did we realise, but there's all sorts of mad stuff going on elsewhere. Outside of our snow-encrusted little igloo of a town, there is a massive continent-sized country misleadingly labelled China, in which there is an abundance of variation. It is a world we had forgotton. A world within which exists a myriad fabled magical gems such as cocktails, pizza and the indescribable aniseedy joy of 'Fishermans friends'. A couple of weeks back, we blindly boarded a train heading from the town of Zhangye, (pronounced Jangye) around two hours from where we live in Minle, to Lanzhou, (Lanjou). 'Spring Festival' had just begun, thus we were expecting it to be a little busy and had only been able to buy 'standing tickets'. Cunningly, forseeing a busy carriage, we had purchased two tiny metal travel stools ... read more

Great Ride Forward -- See www.greatrideforward.com for more stories/pics/video. The most amazing and frustrating part about traveling in China is that very few things go as planned. Amazing because you find yourself in situations and places that you would never expect. When a wrong turn on the streets of Kunming leads you to endless alleyways of baby grand pianos, you have to smile. Frustrating, however, because sometimes a schedule must be kept. Such is the case when shipping two motorcycles across the country…five days before Chinese New Year. We boarded the train to Kunming at Shanghai South Station on Monday evening, excited about the journey ahead. I have to admit that the idea of our trip had never fully set in during the months prior to this moment. We’d been charting our route for months, pouring ... read more

I got off the train and bought an overnight sleeper bus ticket to Lijiang for 10 pm that same night. I debated whether or not to go to the Stone Forest (Shi Lin/石林) and I eventually concluded that I didn't have anything better to do at 6 am in an unfamiliar city. I took bus #60 to Kunming East Bus Station where I bought a ticket and caught a bus within an hour. There were only 5 people on the whole bus and it only took about an hour to get there. At the park I used my expired MIT ID to get a ticket at the student price. They said, "It's expired" and I just repeated, "I am a student and want to buy a student ticket" and they gave it to me. First I ... read more

In the past I’ve made passing mentions, in this blog, about attending Keats School in Kunming, in order to learn Mandarin Chinese. And, occasionally I’ve received private messages asking me about my experiences there. I absolutely adore messages and comments on anything I write (one of the reasons I blog instead of just getting a paper diary is because the interactive nature of blogging makes it so much more fun). However, I’ll admit that I’m much better at happily reading e-mails than I am at replying to them. Therefore, I think it makes sense to write a review of that (and maybe some of the other things I get questions about, like TEFL international, if I ever get motivated to do so). I’ve attended Keats School three times thus far. I went for two weeks during ... read more
