And so, waving our little red passports, we set off once more to escape the winter blues... But we didn't check the weather. Who would check the weather before heading off on holiday? Tsk, what a preposterous notion. Why check the weather before heading to an enourmous landmass in the middle of winter...? It all started off swimmingly and Hong Kong was lovely and warm. We caught up with Rob and Charlotte, our friends who have recently moved there, and before you could say 'Factor 30', we were on a beach enjoying the sun and tossing a ball about in the sea with all the smugness of some very smug people indeed. We drank too much, we pranced about in shorts and flip flops and acted like winter was but a fictitious flicker in the mind's ... read more

This is our last day cruising.......very sad We got up this morning for breakfast and for another shore excursion. We visited the largest hydroelectric power project in the world, The 'Three Gorges Dam'. We learnt a little more about it and went to a couple of great vantage points to see views of the entire Dam. It is massive in size and amazing what they have done. They are also buillding a ship elevator for smaller boats to use which takes only 40 minutes to go through the Three Gorges Dam as opposed to the 5 stage Ship Locks which takes 3-4hrs. The elevator will not be finished until 2015 but sounds a little scary if you ask me as your ship is stuck inside a concrete box under water - scary!!! We then got back ... read more

Today we sailed across the boarder from Chongqing to Wushan. We didn't get up as early this morning, deciding to skip the early morning tea but were woken by a ship announcement over loud speaker at 7am to say we were entering into the first gorge, the 'Qutang Gorge'. It is 8km long and took 20-30 minutes to pass through. Tam and I jumped out of bed and raced up the stairs to the deck area to watch and take photo's. It was freezing, especially as we were not prepared and put on minimal clothing. We then headed straight to breakfast! After breaky, a quick shower and we were off to another shore excursion. We got onto a smaller cruise boat and cruised through the 'Lesser Gorge' along the Daning River. It was beautiful and along ... read more

The last few days of our tour were spent on the Yangtze River on the Victoria Queen. We flew from Xi’an to Chongqing and were met by another guide and driver. We knew that we would have a few hours before boarding the boat and figured we would just hang around until boarding time. We were surprised that China Highlights had planned a tour of Chongqing for us. Our first stop was Emperor Yu’s Palace and then we went to see the Great Hall of the People which is now the Renmin Hotel. We had lunch in the basement of the hotel and then it was time to go to the boat. We took a tram down to where the boat was docked and our guide found a guy with a pole over his shoulders to ... read more

This blog covers 11th October to 14th October, which is the dates that we did a river cruise along the Yangtze River, the biggest river in China and the third biggest in the world. We didn’t have the Internet while on the ship, hence the reason I am so far behind in this blog. 11th October Not much happened today, it was a day dedicated to transit. We flew from Xi’an in the morning to Wuhan before taking a 4.5 hour bus ride to Yichang where the cruise started. We had dinner in Yichang, so by the time we got on the boat it was around the 9pm mark. On the ship there is no cash flow, everything is done by signing a chit sheet, which can be kind of scary! 12 October The cruise ship ... read more

From Dianne: Our journey up the Yangtze River (Chang Jiang) began many years ago with a special picture book, The Story of Ping, written by Marjorie Flack. Ping was a little duck that lived on a “wise eyed” boat on the Yangtze River. As we read and reread this story to our children and then our grandchildren, we never imagined being able to journey through time on this special river. The last time I read the book was to Maya and Jamie during our time home this summer. And now - just a little over a month later - we were able to take a cruise up the Yangtze River. The images of the past would meld with the realities of the present as we experienced the third largest river in the world. From Peter: The ... read more

Chinese Cruising - The Transfer On our last day in CQ we continued planning the next few legs of our trip and awaited our transfer to our Yangtze River cruise. As I mentioned, we almost booked a tour of China, to make things easier, but instead decided to fly solo. Our 3 night river cruise was the closest thing we have come to a tour since our one night on Halong Bay and our one night on Frasier Island. Let’s just say, it started with a bang and made us glad we did not book a longer tour. Our guide, John, was due at the hotel at 5pm, so we had tea and read in the lobby lounge waiting for him. He arrived a half hour early and said we were waiting for the driver. ... read more

Friday 17th July 2009 Yangzi River We were once again woken at 5.30 by the ships morning call but we had no intention of going anywhere. There was another trip on up some other river but we were giving this one a miss. The mother in our room decided that 5 am was time to have full volume conversations though so it was hard to get back to sleep until they had left for the tour then we lay in til about 9 and went up on deck to read books for a while. There is another odd thing about these ships and Chinese tourists, any area of deck or around the railing on the side are full of washing. The passengers all do their washing on board and hang everything out, knickers and all to ... read more

We left 'The Johns' air conditioned apartment into the near 40 degree heat of Chongqing along with the other Irish couple and a couple from Quebec. Accompanied by our Chinese guide we headed to the ferry terminal all a little exicted and nervous to see the 'cruise ship' that would be our home for the next while. On arrival at the terminal we were greeted ,surprisingly, with sight of two familiar faces in the form of Mark and Emily; the Montreal couple who we met in Xi'an. We had a few reunion hugs and introduced them to the other couples. Just before boarding the ship we noticed a few officials taking tempretures to test for swine flu (not an ideal situation to be in after lugging your backpack in near 40 degree heat). However, after the ... read more

Day 130 Our overnight train arrived promptly into Wuchang at 7am. We had all managed to get some rest even if it was disturbed throughout the night. Julie stayed on the train as it was heading to Beijing, as she had decided to go home due to her sister being ill. After getting some breakfast at the station we boarded a coach to take us on the 4 hour journey to Yichang to board the boat, our home for the next few days. The Yangtze River is the longest river in China and Asia, and the third-longest in the world (over 6000km long), after the Amazon in South America and the Nile in Africa. We boarded the Silver Moon at 5.30pm, Dodo checked us in and we made our way to our rooms. The boat was ... read more
