April 22nd-24th, 2011 The first day was spent mostly traveling. We had to be up early at jumped on a public bus from 8am to 5pm. The bus did make two stops to use the squatters, but one was so bad people were coming out sick, so I decided to hold it. There was one interesting Chinese lady on the bus with us that picked up live chickens in the first city and was bringing them back to her home. First she tried to put them under the bus with our luggage, but since they were not caged they stopped her and she had to keep them near the bus driver up front. Not something you see often in America. The cruise was a three day trip through the three gorges of the Yangtze River ending ... read more

I was awake before the birds this morning. We had a later breakfast as our shore excursion today was not until the afternoon. I planned to sit on my balcony taking some great pictures as the world went by but it was too misty (apparently this is normal this time of year). I still sat on the balcony anyway and watched the world went by. We docked and hopped off the boat at Fengdu - 'the City of Ghosts'. This is where heaven and hell are apparently located. This was very touristy and not like the other places we had been before. Apparently they are building some kind of tourist park and there was a lot of construction going on. There were some really cool statues depicting different ghosts. I wouldn't but this high on my ... read more

Another early morning wake up call by those pesky birds chiring along in unison. Today was a highlight - a trip up the Shennong Stream. We had to disembark the boat and hop on to some smaller ferry boats to take us up the stream - the scenery is absolutely amazing but as with everything progress is encroaching and buildings and bridge works are beginning to dot the landscape. It was freezing cold and we needed every layer that we had on, although we did brave standing out on the deck to capture some beautiful pictures of the misty mountains and granite landscapes. We were on the lookout for the hanging coffin - a coffin suspended in a crevice - I couldn't see it the first time round and decided that I would keep a look ... read more

This blog will most likely amuse everyone but firstly we will discuss the serious issues I.e the sites!! We visited the Terracotta Warriors on Tuesday, where we got a minibus to. It was impressive, so far only a few thousand warriors have been excavated and work still continues! There were 3 massive warehouses/ showrooms with various warriors, horses and chariots. When we arrived back to the hotel, Carla & Ryan and ourselves rented bicycles and cycled along the Xian City Wall. It was great fun and the weather was lovely. The bicycles were so old I thought mine was going to fall apart whilst cycling! I had a bell and I continued to ring it to get the Chinese to move out of the way!! We reckoned What goes around comes around... That evening we went for ... read more

It's funny how one person coming onto a tour bus with a nasty flu can affect the 26 other people. Slowly over the days people started coming down with the lurgy - sore throat, high fever, nasty cough... We were all just waiting to catch it. Our guide Ding told us to go to the Chemist to stock up on cold and flu medicine as we were going to be on the cruise for the next couple of days. It was quite funny seeing groups of foreigners walking to the chemist (who by the way did not speak ANY English) and try to mime their symptoms. It was hilarious. We got by though and came away with an assortment of things to try and keep the flu away. We got to the airport around half eleven, ... read more

Beginning in the foothills of the Himalayas and running across the width of the country to the South China Sea beyond Shanghai, the Yangtze river is phenomenal. It is the third largest river in the world, and reportedly has the most bridges spanning it's waters. Its three gorges are one of the biggest attractions in China and the completion of the enormous Three Gorges Dam in 2008 broke many records. Sadly most were negative ones. But enough of the superlatives, first we had to get there. Chongqing is the starting point for the very popular three day cruises along possibly the most spectacular section of this mighty river. Passing through three huge gorges on either a luxury western cruise ship or the more modest Chinese version. When we arrived on the hilly city (as Chongqing is ... read more

YANGSHUO 23/6/10: Even though the beds were comfortable I just couldn't sleep. The last time I checked my watch was 2:00am in the morning and it seemed like we still hadn’t even left Shenzhen, the city just went on and on. At 5:30 am the driver called out “Yangshuo!” Jacinta called out to me and we scurried off the bus. I took one look at Jacinta and realised that she hadn’t slept either. We were immediately approached by a tout wanting us to look at his hotel. He sweet talked us until we finally gave in to the free ride to the hotel. We negotiated a room for 90CYN per night with free breakfast and a beer. The rooms were way above the standards of what we were used to so we reluctantly accepted hopping we ... read more

Hej igen. ... read more

Day 151: Tuesday, April 27th, 2010. Yangtze River Cruise: Fengdu, China. We docked in Badong, China at some point during the night so that's where we took off from today. We went thru the Wu Gorge, had breakfast, and then docked at some city where we hopped on a ferry that would take us thru smaller gorge (called the "Lesser Gorges" or "Little Three Gorges"). Beautiful scenery. We then hop onto an even smaller boat to fit into the last and smallest gorge. During this boat trip, one of the guys on the boat demonstrates how we should wear their hat and "cape" thing and most of us give it a shot and have our picture taken (and tip him). Along the way on the river (for both the ferry and the smaller ... read more

Day 150: Monday, April 26th, 2010. Yangtze River Cruise: Badong, China. We are awoken 30 minutes before breakfast by gentle chinese music playing softly in the speakers in our room- kind of cool. Then, silence for 20 minutes before the music comes back along with a voice telling us its time for breakfast. Last night we met the mysterious voice, a girl named Coco who is studying English. Her studying has payed off- she speaks it well. Better than me- not saying much though. We went up to the Three Gorges Dam, took a bus to the top of it so we could look around. I don't get dams. I mean, I understand the purpose and all, but for some reason they don't impress me. I don't have the engineering mind so it doesn't sink in ... read more
