This morning’s task was to cross the boarder into Nepal and we did this as quickly as possible. The wait at the Chinese side was long but was made comical by watching a huge number of Indians (they come to visit a holy lake and mountain in East Tibet, China, as they believe this is a place of beginning for Hinduism) bleary eyed trying to find out what was going on. As well as observing the many different vehicle checks of varying degrees of thoroughness causing another comical hold up that many Tibetans were getting irate about. This town has to be the most inappropriate place to have a border crossing, when the roads are not wide enough to have two cars pass one another and that buildings can only accommodate 2 custom officials with ... read more

Eager to get out of the god forsaken place, we had to pay for the privilege of a cold shower, which was not going to happen. We left at 9am as Pasang said that the road was full of construction and if we left now we would be able to have a half day's free time, in a place that he summed up as a deserted Chinese run town. Oh whoopee. The road was interesting and at times was like what we experienced for the first week of our trip, sheer long drops down to rocky raging rivers with only millimetres space for one car let alone two. About 30kms from Zhangmu we came across the construction work on the road, and this 30km took us over 2 hours to travel, due to trucks in ... read more

It all began with the overwhelming desire to go Yak spotting. Having been denied exposure to Yaks on our Annapurna trek, this time we were determined not to leave the Himalaya without laying our eyes on the hairy beasts. We reasoned that with yaks being creatures of high altitude temperment (they prefer to dwell above 3000m), what better place to guarantee a Yak sighting than Everest Base Camp at 5200m? Strict travel regulations and the need to obtain foreigner travel permits met that independent travel in Tibet was impossible and the only way we could overland meant taking (a costly) organised trip. In Thamel we started to investigate the options, but they all came back cost prohibitive without procuring some travel buddies to split the rupees. 12/04/07 The start of our land cruiser trip down the friendship highway from Lhasa to the Nepalese border via Mt Everest! The first two hours was easy going along nice roads up through snowy mountains. Stopped at the peak at 4794m for some photos and a turn at sitting on a yak. The toilets were just the beginning of how bad they were yet to come, with just an open pit behind a small wall in which you were expected to pay for. Drove past Yamdrok Tso lake which was beautiful and past many deserted looking town. The desert looking fields were being plowed by the locals using yaks and donkeys and hand held plowers. Was a step back in time. Stopped in the 'town' of Gyantse in the early evening which was a great little ... read more

DAY 1 We started our journey to the Nepal border early the next morning. Nima, our driver, came in a spacious Toyota Land Cruiser at 9:30 a.m. to pick up Simon and I, and we went to pick up the other two passengers, Hong and Bora. Simon and I realized that we forgot something, se we went back to the Yak Hotel, which is when Hong and Bora realized that they forgot something too, so we had to go back to their place again! Anyhow, that was the start of our four glorious days together! Our first stop was Yamdrok-tso (lake), one of the four holy lakes in Tibet. Getting there was an extraordinary feat in itself, with the winding roads along the mountains and the air getting thinner and thinner with each passing altitude gain. ... read more

A freezing 'Tashi Delek' to you all!! Tibet - we didn't know much about the place, which only increased the sense of adventure we felt when going in... And an adventure it was. Hmmm, what did we have.... A yak attack, Acute Mountain Sickness & oxygen bottles, a village full of hostile Tibetans, and getting stuck at the border due to political unrest. But was it worth it? Absolutely. Nothing beats riding a bike through the worlds highest, most barren but most impressive landscape with crisp blue skies above, bright white snowcaps ahead, and turquoise lakes below. After an amazing flight from Shangri-la (formerly known as Zhongdian, this place seems to have won the official rights to this name - much to the jealousy of all surrounding towns) we landed in Lhasa. Upon arrival it was ... read more

I should say that we crawled and the diarrohea kicking in didn't help our progress. After nearly 3 hours we reached the base camp which is a barren, rock strewn, god forsaken place and why any sane person would want to go any further up that mountain beats me. Anyway, there were no tents or climbers as it was too late in the year and too cold, so we took a few photos and managed to bum a lift back to Rongbuk (our driver had refused to carry us as it wasn't in the contract!). Eventually, our driver had ... read more

Tibet was phenomenal; the landscape, people, monasteries blew me away and surpassed all my expectations. I am afraid my limited vocabulary and lack of adequate describing words will lead to this wonderful place not being portrayed as well as it could. But I will give it a go. Our flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa was on a crystal clear day so the view of the Himalayas and the mighty Everest was perfect. Arriving in Lhasa I was shocked with how ‘Chinese’ it had become; it was very distributing. But the Chinese have been occupying Tibet for more than 50 years now, so I suppose I should have expected this. Early evening Elke and I went for a walk around Barkhor, a medieval pilgrim circuit. There were 100’s of Tibetans circling the circuit in a clockwise direction ... read more

Forgotten Tibet - Sakya Asia » China » Tibet » Friendship Highway By SteviecOctober 29th 2006Stephen CarrollWe hit the road again, with the stomach still a bit iffy, but we had spent 2 nights in Shigatse and we only had 5 left to get to the border. The village of Sakya is a bit off the Friendship Highway and feels like some forgotten and barren place. Still the people were curious and friendly and our day there was spent climbing up to the monastery and telling the local kids that we had no money for them. Agnes was attacked by a swarm of them who took her tissues! ... read more
